What is confirmed about Anthony Geary’s death
ABC confirmed Geary’s death at age 78. The Associated Press reported that he died in Amsterdam on December 14, 2025, after complications from a surgical procedure three days earlier. TV Insider likewise reported complications from a scheduled operation. Those reports are the available public account; they do not identify a diagnosis or provide additional medical circumstances.
Geary lived in Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama. TV Insider reported a statement from Gama following Geary’s death.
Why Luke Spencer made Geary a daytime-TV icon
A role that became his signature
Geary joined General Hospital as Luke Spencer in 1978. He played the character on and off through 2015 and returned for a cameo in 2017. The role earned him eight Daytime Emmy Awards, as reported by the Associated Press.

Luke was written as a volatile, morally complicated figure rather than a conventional leading man. In a 2015 Nightline interview, Geary explained his approach: “He was not created to be a heroic character. He was created to be an anti-hero and I have treasured the anti-side of the hero and pushed it for a long time.”
Luke and Laura’s enormous reach
Luke’s pairing with Laura, played by Genie Francis, became one of daytime television’s most famous supercouples. Their 1981 wedding drew a reported 30 million viewers, according to the Associated Press in 2025. Elizabeth Taylor appeared as a guest star in the storyline.

The pairing’s popularity helped make Geary a central figure in the expansion of soap operas beyond their regular audience. Its legacy, however, cannot be separated from the storyline that preceded the romance.
The storyline’s troubling history
In an early General Hospital story, Luke sexually assaulted Laura. The program initially framed the encounter as seduction and later transformed the characters’ relationship into a romance and redemption arc. ABC News and the Associated Press have both revisited that history. The assault itself is not romantic, and contemporary descriptions of Luke and Laura’s cultural impact should acknowledge why the storyline has drawn sustained criticism.

Geary’s other television work and public tributes
Before and alongside General Hospital, Geary appeared on Bright Promise and The Young and the Restless, among other credits. His career remained closely identified with Luke, but his work also included roles outside Port Charles and the long-running ABC soap.
ABC said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Anthony Geary, whose portrayal of Luke Spencer helped define General Hospital and daytime television.”
Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, said in a statement reported by the Associated Press: “The entire ‘General Hospital’ family is heartbroken over the news of Tony Geary’s passing.” Valentini called Geary “a brilliant actor” who “set the bar that we continue to strive for.”

Geary’s eight Daytime Emmy Awards, nearly four decades of intermittent appearances as Luke Spencer, and the extraordinary audience for Luke and Laura’s wedding place him among the most consequential performers in American daytime television. His portrayal gave the soap genre a star whose central character could be funny, dangerous, damaged and charismatic at once.
Best Value
Remembering that achievement also requires remembering the limits and consequences of the story that made Luke and Laura famous. Geary’s performance endured because it carried contradiction; the cultural record of the character does too.
