Tyreek Hill was driving a black McLaren 720S when Miami-Dade police stopped and detained him near Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on September 8, 2024, shortly before the Miami Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Reporting did not establish whether Hill owned, leased or rented that particular car.
What car was Tyreek Hill driving?
The vehicle was identified as a McLaren 720S, a mid-engine British supercar. Miami Herald reporting cited Matt Cruz, owner of MVP Miami car rentals, who identified the model after reviewing the traffic-stop video. Los Angeles Times coverage and police body-camera footage likewise described a black 720S.
The 720S is known for its dramatic styling, very low seating position and large rear air intakes. Its performance helps explain why the car drew attention, but the model alone does not establish how fast Hill was traveling that morning.
How much does a McLaren 720S cost?
The Miami Herald described the car as costing approximately $350,000 in 2025 coverage. That is an approximate purchase-price description, not a confirmed transaction price for Hill’s vehicle. Actual values vary with model year, options, mileage, condition and whether the car is new or used.

Those are published model specifications and commonly cited figures, not an independent test of the specific car stopped in Miami. Road conditions, tires, fuel, temperature and testing method can all affect acceleration and top speed.
What happened during the traffic stop?
The stop occurred near Hard Rock Stadium before the Dolphins’ September 8, 2024 game. Video shows Hill handing over his driver’s license and objecting when an officer knocked on the window. He put the window back up; officers then removed him from the McLaren, placed him in handcuffs and detained him.

The initial allegations involved speeding or careless/reckless driving. Hill was also cited for failing to wear a seat belt. He was released in time to play against Jacksonville.
Were Tyreek Hill’s citations dismissed?
Yes. Associated Press and ABC News reporting said both citations were later dismissed after the charging officers failed to attend the hearing. Miami-Dade police emphasized that a dismissal for that reason does not establish that the citation had no merit. It also is not a finding that the alleged conduct definitely occurred.

Did Tyreek Hill own the McLaren?
The available coverage does not confirm ownership. The car may have been owned, leased or rented, and reports identifying the model do not identify the contractual owner. Because MVP Miami car-rental owner Matt Cruz helped confirm the vehicle’s identity, rental availability is part of the context, but it does not prove Hill rented that particular McLaren.
Why Hill said he kept the window up
Hill told CNN, in comments quoted by the Los Angeles Times, that if he lowered the window, people walking or driving by would recognize him. That explanation became part of the widely circulated video and subsequent discussion of the encounter, separate from the question of who owned the car.

What makes the 720S notable?
Performance-focused design
The 720S combines a twin-turbocharged V8 with a lightweight supercar platform and rear-wheel drive. Its published acceleration and top-speed figures place it firmly in the high-performance exotic-car class.
Everyday compromises
Low ground clearance, limited storage, expensive maintenance and high insurance costs make a 720S less practical than an ordinary road car. Those trade-offs apply to the model generally; they do not reveal the ownership or condition of the particular black car in the Miami video.
