It let eligible users search for songs, albums, and artists, preview results, share them in chats, and open or play them through Spotify. It was not a Spotify acquisition, a complete Spotify client built into Skype, or a synchronized group-listening feature. The integration is now obsolete: Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025.
What Microsoft announced in 2018
The headline “Microsoft is Bringing Spotify to Skype” referred to a software add-in reported on August 8, 2018. The add-in was designed to make sharing music in Skype conversations easier. It did not announce an ownership change, a Microsoft purchase of Spotify, or a bundled Spotify subscription.
The contemporary report described Spotify as an option in Skype’s chat interface. Spotify remained the separate music service used for playback. Thurrott’s August 8, 2018 report is the surviving source for the feature details.
Who could use it?
The first rollout was a preview for Skype Insiders in the United States, beginning August 8, 2018. The reported minimum version was Skype 8.26 or newer. Microsoft said it planned to expand the add-in gradually to Skype Insiders worldwide.

The available evidence does not establish a final public-launch date or universal availability across every Skype edition. It also does not provide a definitive device-by-device compatibility list. A contemporary report suggested Android, iOS, and Windows 10 support, but that was presented as an assumption rather than a confirmed Microsoft matrix.

- Select the plus-shaped Add to Chat control beside the message box.
- Choose Spotify from the available add-ins.
- Search for a song, album, or artist.
- Preview the result.
- Share the music item in the conversation.
- Use Spotify to play it.
The feature connected Skype’s conversation composer to Spotify content. A shared item was not the same thing as Skype streaming audio to everyone in a call.

Nothing in the documented announcement confirms synchronized playback, a shared listening room, common playback controls, Spotify Premium access, a Skype music library, or playback without Spotify’s own account and licensing rules. The report also does not specify whether previews worked for signed-out users or how free and Premium accounts behaved.

Why some users never saw Spotify
During the preview, the Spotify option could be absent because a person was not enrolled in Skype Insider, was outside the initial region, used an older build, had not reached the staged rollout, or was on an unsupported platform or edition. The report does not show that every Skype user received the add-in.
If a shared link opened but would not play, that did not necessarily indicate a Skype fault. Playback could still depend on Spotify account status, regional catalog rights, device restrictions, and subscription rules—conditions the 2018 report did not document.

What happened to the feature?
The long-term availability of the add-in is not established in the surviving 2018 coverage. Its present status is nevertheless clear because Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025. As of September 2026, the consumer Skype app and its old Spotify add-in are unavailable.
Microsoft directed Skype users toward Microsoft Teams Free. Microsoft’s retirement guidance says Skype users could sign in to Teams Free with their Skype credentials, with contacts and chats becoming available there in the supported migration flow. That does not establish that the Spotify add-in moved to Teams.

The retirement affected consumer Skype, not every Microsoft communications product in the same way. Skype for Business is a separate service and was not the application described in the 2018 Spotify add-in report.
What happened to Skype data?
Microsoft also offered a Skype data-export process. Its updated guidance cited June 15, 2026 as an extended export deadline and warned that data could be deleted after applicable deadlines. That date has passed, so readers should not assume an export request remains available without checking Microsoft’s current support pages.
