A Reddit-made parody of Coca-Cola’s 2024 AI Christmas advertising became more entertaining than the original by doing the one thing the brand tried to avoid: making the technology’s visual failures the joke.
Where Coca-Cola used generative AI to recreate the warmth and nostalgia of its famous Holidays Are Coming campaign, the parody embraced distorted bodies, impossible motion, explosions and bizarre animal behavior. Its apparent incompetence was intentional—or, at least, presented that way—and that made it feel more honest, memorable and suited to internet humor.
What happened?
On November 20, 2024, Futurism reported on a fan-made parody circulating through Reddit. Available coverage identifies it as a Reddit-made work, but does not establish one definitive creator, original upload, production workflow or AI model. It should therefore be treated as an anonymous or semi-anonymous fan video—not an official Coca-Cola release.
The parody took the recognizable ingredients of a Coca-Cola Christmas commercial and pushed them into AI-video absurdity. Bodies morphed, objects behaved impossibly and scenes erupted into visual chaos. One especially memorable gag showed a polar bear throwing its cub into an icy lake. The joke was not that the video had accidentally failed to look real. The joke was that it looked spectacularly, knowingly wrong.

The Coca-Cola campaign it was mocking
Coca-Cola’s real 2024 holiday campaign revisited its iconic 1995 Holidays Are Coming commercial, the source of the familiar Christmas-truck imagery and musical identity. In its official announcement, the company described the project as a combination of holiday heritage, its “Real Magic” platform and new digital tools.
The work involved Secret Level Entertainment Studio, The Wild Card and Silverside AI. Coca-Cola presented the campaign as an experiment in using AI and other digital techniques to reinterpret established brand material and adapt it for different markets and audiences.
That is an important distinction: “AI-generated” did not mean that people had no role in making the ads. Coca-Cola’s campaign involved creative direction, production oversight, editing, prompting, selection and brand management. Later reporting attributed a workforce of roughly 100 people to the wider effort and said Silverside generated more than 70,000 clips, although those figures do not mean every clip appeared in the finished advertisements. The company later described its holiday work as combining generative AI with human creativity.
Why the original drew criticism
The backlash was not about one single problem. It combined three different complaints.

- Four-piece set that includes two Coke drinking glasses, a bottle opener, and a vintage-style collectible tin caddy.
- Caddy is perfect for carrying bottles of Coke to a gathering of friends and family, thanks to the metal handle with a wood grip.
- Coke glasses are made from real glass and stand 5 1/2" tall.
- The bottle opener is about 6" long, and the caddy measures 9" x 4.5" x 4.5". Overall, this set measures 9" x 5" x 9.3".
- It all comes wrapped together with a red Coca-Cola bow.
- The images looked uncanny. Viewers noticed unstable anatomy, inconsistent movement and objects that did not behave according to the physical rules established by the scene.
- The tone conflicted with the brand’s nostalgia. Coca-Cola was asking synthetic imagery to reproduce one of advertising’s most familiar and emotionally loaded Christmas campaigns. Small visual errors became more obvious because audiences already knew what the original was supposed to feel like.
- The production method became part of the message. Once the campaign openly foregrounded AI, viewers judged not only the finished images but also the decision to use generative systems in a major holiday campaign. Some critics interpreted that choice as an attempt to replace conventional creative labor, although the available evidence does not establish that human workers were removed from the process.
Coverage in Inc., AdNews and AIAAIC’s incident record described reactions ranging from “soulless” and uncreative to uncanny and physically flawed. Those are reported judgments, not objective measurements of the campaign’s quality or commercial performance.
Why the parody seemed better
The parody understood the central weakness of generative video: its mistakes are often more interesting than its attempts at realism.
| Coca-Cola’s approach | The parody’s approach |
|---|---|
| Hide or minimize technical failure | Make technical failure the premise |
| Recreate warmth and nostalgia | Mock the impossibility of reproducing them perfectly |
| Seek polish and emotional reassurance | Seek shock, absurdity and laughter |
| Protect familiar brand imagery | Disrupt familiar imagery for comic effect |
| Present AI as a production technology | Present AI’s visual oddness as entertainment |
That reversal gave the fan video a clearer creative intention. A malformed animal or impossible transformation is distracting in a sentimental advertisement because it breaks the emotional spell. In a parody, the same error can be the punchline. The viewer no longer asks whether the image is convincing; the viewer asks what bizarre thing will happen next.
This is why the claim that the parody was “way better” should be understood as a judgment about entertainment and memorability, not a verified claim about filmmaking, brand strategy or advertising effectiveness. Futurism’s writer and some online commenters found the parody more enjoyable because it was self-aware and chaotic. There is no evidence that it outperformed Coca-Cola in sales, brand lift or standardized ad testing.

The 1995 problem: nostalgia is difficult to synthesize
The original Holidays Are Coming commercial benefited from more than its images. Its appeal came from practical-looking objects, clear compositions, recognizable music, repetition and decades of accumulated audience memory.
Recreating that material with generative video created an unusually difficult comparison. The more closely the new campaign imitated the old one, the more viewers could notice altered proportions, unstable lighting, inconsistent details and a lack of human texture. The technology was not being judged as an entirely new visual language. It was being judged against a commercial many people already regarded as a holiday tradition.
Generative AI can produce an attractive impression quickly, but nostalgia depends on continuity and trust. A synthetic approximation may contain the right truck, snow and lights while still feeling emotionally wrong.

Not conclusively. Online reaction was sharply negative in much of the coverage, but social-media criticism is not the same as a sales result or a formal brand study.

A later document cited testing by System1 that reportedly rated the ads highly among regular consumers. That finding does not prove universal approval, commercial success or superior long-term brand impact, but it does show why public mockery alone cannot settle the question. A campaign can attract online ridicule and still perform adequately—or well—against other advertising measures.
The fairest conclusion separates four issues:
- Cultural reception: the ads attracted substantial online criticism and parody.
- Creative judgment: many viewers found the imagery uncanny or emotionally empty.
- Advertising effectiveness: available reporting suggests a more mixed picture than social media alone.
- Commercial performance: the supplied evidence does not establish that the campaign succeeded or failed in sales terms.
The broader lesson
The Reddit parody worked because it made a clean creative choice. It did not ask AI imagery to pretend it was human warmth. It asked the technology to be strange, excessive and funny.
That does not make the parody more polished, more suitable for a global brand or more persuasive as an advertisement. By conventional standards, it loses on brand safety, emotional reassurance and technical coherence. But it may win on entertainment and memorability because it aligns its purpose with the medium’s visible weaknesses.
Coca-Cola’s experiment was more ambitious: use AI-assisted production to refresh one of its most recognizable pieces of holiday advertising without losing the feeling that made it famous. The backlash showed how difficult that balance can be. Audiences may forgive broken AI when the brokenness is the point. They are less forgiving when a brand uses synthetic imagery to manufacture warmth while asking viewers to compare it with a cherished human-made original.
