Open the refrigerator, unwrap a slice of cheese, and a dog may appear as if summoned by an alarm only it can hear. “Cheese Tax” turns that familiar household scene into a comic legal system: the dog is the tax collector, the cheese is taxable property, and payment is apparently due every time the drawer opens.
The viral song is an original 2023 recording by Puppy Songs, the Atlanta-based project of songwriter and musician Matt Hobbs. Its appeal is not really about cheese. It is about the instantly recognizable way dogs treat every human food routine as their official business.
What is “Cheese Tax”?
“Cheese Tax” is a short song by Puppy Songs, the dog-perspective music project created by Matt Hobbs. It was released as a single in March 2023 and runs for approximately one minute and eight or nine seconds, depending on the listed version.
Hobbs wrote, performed, and arranged the song. The official credits also identify him as the mixer, with Matthew Heath handling mastering and Justin Jackson creating the cover art. The recording should not be confused with unrelated TikTok accounts or creators sometimes credited in secondary posts.

The song’s premise is simple: whenever a person opens cheese, the household dog is owed a portion. It presents that demand in mock-bureaucratic language, as though the dog were enforcing a binding civic code rather than begging beside the kitchen counter. Rules, payment, collection, and a dairy “tariff” become the vocabulary for an ordinary pet habit.
The scene behind the joke
According to Puppy Songs’ biography and contemporaneous reporting, Hobbs developed the song after noticing his dogs—particularly Mar Pup—appearing whenever he and his wife opened the cheese drawer while cooking. That detail is the joke’s foundation: dogs often learn that particular sounds and movements predict food.
A refrigerator door, wrapper, cutting board, or drawer can become an unofficial dinner bell. The dog does not need to see the food. It may simply hear the unmistakable preparation ritual and arrive to inspect the transaction.
“Cheese Tax” exaggerates this behavior by giving the dog an official role. The pet is not portrayed as mildly hopeful; it is an entitled collector arriving to enforce a household law. That shift in perspective is what makes the song feel so accurate to dog owners.

- It is brief. The complete musical idea fits into roughly a minute.
- It is immediately understandable. No elaborate backstory is needed once a dog rushes toward food.
- It has built-in timing. Owners can match the sound to a refrigerator opening, a dog’s sudden appearance, an intense stare, or the eventual “payment.”
- It works with many pets. The videos do not require a particular breed, trick, costume, or dance.
- It invites captions. The dog can be framed as a tax official, auditor, collector, or household authority.
Users reused the sound with dogs of different breeds and, in some cases, other animals. The recurring structure remained the same: a food-related event occurs, the pet notices, and the pet behaves as though a legally enforceable obligation has been triggered.
The song did not invent the phrase
There is an important distinction between the viral recording and the broader expression cheese tax. Dog owners were using the phrase online before the Puppy Songs track appeared to describe a pet’s expected share of human food.
Matt Hobbs did not invent every earlier use of that joke. What Puppy Songs created was a memorable, repeatable musical version of it. The melody and compact structure gave the idea a recognizable audio identity, allowing thousands of owners to place their own household moments inside the same comic framework.
In other words, “cheese tax” is an older internet-style dog-owner joke, while “Cheese Tax” by Puppy Songs is the specific song that made the concept especially reusable on TikTok.
Who made Puppy Songs?
Puppy Songs began as Hobbs’ pandemic-era creative project in 2020. The project’s songs are written from the perspective of his dogs, Leni and Mar Pup. Rather than treating dogs as background characters, the music gives them exaggerated opinions, demands, fears, and household responsibilities.
That approach explains why “Cheese Tax” connected so readily. The song does not merely describe a dog waiting for food. It lets the dog narrate the situation and insist that its interpretation is the only reasonable one.

The same device can turn other familiar behaviors into songs: following someone from room to room, reacting to a delivery, objecting to a bath, or demanding attention at an inconvenient time. The comedy comes from treating a small canine habit with the seriousness of a legal dispute or public announcement.

Does cheese make a good dog treat?
The song is entertainment, not feeding advice. Some dogs can have a small amount of plain cheese occasionally, but cheese is high in fat, some dogs digest it poorly, and too much high-fat food can contribute to weight gain or pancreatitis. Extra caution is appropriate for dogs with obesity, food sensitivities, lactose intolerance, or a history of digestive problems.
The FDA also warns that fatty foods can be dangerous for pets and that risk depends on the animal, the amount eaten, and the specific food. Cheese containing garlic, onion, chives, or other potentially harmful ingredients should not be treated as an ordinary dog snack.

If an owner chooses to pay the joke’s “tax,” the sensible version is a tiny, plain, occasional portion—not a standing entitlement to whatever is on the table. A dog-specific treat or a small training treat can be a more controllable alternative, provided its ingredients and calories fit the individual dog’s diet. When in doubt, ask a veterinarian, particularly if the dog has a medical condition or has reacted badly to food before.
When a TikTok joke becomes a brand idea
The concept became commercially recognizable quickly. In March 2023, Kraft Singles introduced a limited “Cheese Tax Pack” concept: a package described in contemporaneous coverage as containing 15 slices for people and one additional slice intended for the dog.
That promotion was a historical, limited activation tied to the viral moment. It should not be presented as a currently available product without a new, current campaign or inventory check. Its significance is cultural: a small dog-owner joke had become recognizable enough for a major food brand to build a promotion around it.
Why “Cheese Tax” captures dog ownership so well
The song works because it identifies a larger truth about living with dogs: nothing in a shared home remains entirely human for long. A snack becomes a negotiation. A sofa becomes disputed territory. A package delivery becomes a security operation. A quiet meal becomes a public hearing.

- MEALTIME FUN – Large bottom chamber holds up to 1.5 cups of food to turn mealtime into playtime when used in place of a food bowl.
- WOBBLING FEEDING FUN – Rounded and weighted base keeps the toy moving, spinning, and wobbling, enticing your dog to keep playing.
- ADJUSTABLE DIFFICULTY – Top and bottom gates adjust to control food flow and fit different kibble sizes.
- SLOW-FEEDING ENRICHMENT – Dispenses food gradually to slow fast eaters and provide mental and physical stimulation.
- TOUGH BUILD FOR INTERACTIVE FUN – Not recommended as a chew toy; supervise play and wash after use.
Dogs are attentive to patterns, and owners are equally attentive to their pets’ reactions. That shared familiarity gives the song its punch. Viewers do not need to know the exact dog in a video; they recognize the posture, the stare, the sudden footsteps, and the confidence that payment is overdue.
“Cheese Tax” is therefore more than a catchy TikTok sound. It is a compact piece of observational comedy about the way dogs turn ordinary routines into rituals—and how willingly their owners accept the new rules.

The Bottom Line
“Cheese Tax” became viral because it turns a nearly universal dog-owner experience into a tiny musical courtroom: the refrigerator opens, the dog appears, and the rules are apparently the rules. The song is by Matt Hobbs’ Puppy Songs—not the unrelated creators sometimes credited online—and its lasting appeal comes from how precisely it captures a dog’s confidence that every household event includes a role for them.
