A security video shows a coyote entering Brittany Furlan and Tommy Lee’s Woodland Hills backyard, grabbing their dachshund Neena near the pool, and running away with the dog. The footage does not show the moment Neena was removed from the coyote. Furlan said she climbed the wall, chased the animal, and pulled the dog from its mouth.
What the video shows
Home-security footage shared by comedian and internet personality Brittany Furlan on September 24, 2024, shows a coyote approaching two dogs in the couple’s backyard in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles County.
The animal moves toward the dogs near the swimming pool, takes Neena—a dachshund—and flees while Furlan screams and gives chase. The camera captures the coyote carrying the dog and Furlan pursuing it, but the physical rescue happens outside the camera’s view.
Furlan said she climbed up the wall and grabbed Neena from the coyote’s mouth. A later portion of the video shows her returning to the yard and telling Tommy Lee, the Mötley Crüe drummer, that a coyote had taken Neena.

Who is Neena?
Neena was described in coverage as a dachshund. ABC7 identified her as a 10-year-old long-haired English cream dachshund. Furlan said the dog was safe after the encounter.
TMZ separately reported Furlan’s claim that the coyote did not puncture Neena’s skin and may have been holding the dog by its fur. That detail comes from the report of Furlan’s account; it is not an independently documented veterinary assessment in the available coverage.
The attack happened in broad daylight
Furlan said the incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m., in broad daylight. That timing may make the encounter especially unsettling, but the California Department of Fish and Wildlife says that seeing a coyote during the day, by itself, does not mean the animal is sick or behaving abnormally.
Coyotes can live in urban, suburban, rural, and remote environments. CDFW identifies pet food, human food, trash, recycling, and other accessible food sources as potential attractants. The agency also recognizes pet loss and coyotes becoming accustomed to human-provided food as common points of human-wildlife conflict.

What dog owners can do around coyotes
The incident is a reminder that a fenced backyard is not automatically a coyote-proof space, particularly for small dogs. CDFW recommends:
- Supervising small pets whenever they are outdoors rather than leaving them alone in a yard.
- Bringing pets indoors at night.
- Keeping dogs leashed while walking.
- Carrying a whistle or another noisemaker during walks.
- Securing trash, recycling, pet food, and other potential food sources.
A dog leash is a practical way to follow the agency’s walking guidance, especially for owners of small dogs in areas where coyotes are common. A leash would not necessarily have prevented this particular backyard incident, and no consumer product can guarantee that an animal will not attack.
Owners who want a simple noisemaker can also consider a portable safety whistle. CDFW recommends a whistle or other noise-making device as part of coyote-encounter preparedness, but a whistle should be presented as a deterrence and attention-getting tool—not a guaranteed coyote repellent.
Reducing attractants is equally important. Keep pet food indoors, close trash and recycling containers securely, and avoid leaving food or scraps outside. These steps address the conditions that can encourage wildlife to spend more time around homes.

What should you do if a coyote approaches?
Keep your dog close and use a firm voice or a noisemaker to discourage the animal from approaching. Do not leave a small pet unattended outside, even during the day. If a coyote has entered a yard, bring people and pets indoors when it is safe to do so and contact the appropriate local wildlife or animal-control authority for guidance.
Do not interpret daylight activity alone as proof that a coyote is diseased. The more useful warning signs are an immediate threat to people or pets, repeated aggressive behavior, or an animal that appears seriously ill or injured. Local authorities can advise residents about reporting and response procedures.
The important distinction in the viral clip
The dramatic headline is supported by Furlan’s account, but the video itself should be described precisely: it shows the coyote grabbing Neena and Furlan chasing after it. It does not show the moment Furlan says she climbed the wall and removed the dog from the animal’s mouth.
That distinction matters because the rescue account and the visible footage are related but not identical pieces of evidence. The Los Angeles Times and CBS Los Angeles reported the incident and Furlan’s description of what happened; TMZ supplied the additional account about the absence of puncture wounds, and ABC7 provided the more specific description of Neena’s age and breed.

Is it abnormal to see a coyote during the day?
Not necessarily. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says daytime activity alone does not establish that a coyote is sick or abnormal.
How can dog owners reduce the risk of a coyote encounter?
CDFW recommends supervising small pets outdoors, bringing pets inside at night, keeping dogs leashed while walking, carrying a whistle or other noisemaker, and securing trash, recycling, pet food, and other attractants.
The Bottom Line
The footage shows a coyote taking Neena from the couple’s Woodland Hills yard, while the rescue itself is described by Furlan rather than shown on camera. Neena was reported safe. For other dog owners, the practical lesson is to supervise small pets outdoors, remove food attractants, keep dogs leashed on walks, and carry a noisemaker in areas where coyotes live.
