Around it, the service added a broad September 1 movie refresh, the coming-of-age comedy Snack Shack, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the final Grand Tour special and all seven seasons of Elementary.
Here are the month’s strongest picks by mood, with the dates and availability caveats kept specific to that 2024 US release calendar.
The month’s essential watch: The Rings of Power Season 2
Prime Video’s biggest September 2024 story was not a large wave of new Originals. It was the weekly continuation of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, which premiered globally on August 29 and ran for eight episodes.
Season 2 begins in the aftermath of the forging of the three Elven rings, with Sauron returning as a major threat in Middle-earth’s Second Age. The setting is thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so you do not need to watch the films or read Tolkien before starting. Familiarity with the books may make some references more rewarding, but the series is designed to stand on its own.

That distinction matters: The Rings of Power Season 2 was not a September 1 premiere. It was September’s main weekly fantasy appointment after its late-August launch.
Optional: a simple way to watch Prime Video
If you watch Prime Video on a television, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max can bring Prime Video and other streaming apps into one interface. The second-generation model supports 4K Ultra HD, Wi-Fi 6E, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos when the content, television and audio equipment are compatible. It is not required for any title in this guide, and not every film or episode is necessarily available in 4K.
The best movies added in September 2024
Snack Shack — September 3
This nostalgic coming-of-age comedy follows best friends A.J. and Moose, who make an audacious bid at a city-council auction and end up taking over a local pool snack shack. Their plans become more complicated when a new lifeguard enters the picture and a love triangle begins to test their friendship.
Snack Shack is the month’s strongest choice for viewers who want an easygoing, 1990s-flavored comedy rather than a sprawling franchise film. It is light, affectionate and built around the chemistry between its young leads.
The American Society of Magical Negroes — September 3
Kobi Libii’s directorial debut stars Justice Smith as Aren, a young biracial artist recruited into a secret organization with a provocative mission: protect Black people by appeasing white liberal elites. The premise is a satirical institutional fantasy, not a claim that such an organization exists in real life.
This is the September movie for viewers who prefer socially pointed, politically charged comedy over straightforward escapism. Its central idea is deliberately uncomfortable, making it a better fit for audiences interested in satire and cultural debate than for a purely relaxed movie night.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish — September 12
Puss discovers that he has used eight of his nine lives and is being hunted by the embodiment of Death. The resulting quest looks like a familiar animated adventure, but the film gives its family-friendly story unusual emotional weight by confronting mortality, fear and the value of a finite life.
It is both an accessible family pick and one of the month’s most thoughtful films. Younger viewers can enjoy the action and humor, while adults may appreciate how seriously it treats anxiety and the consequences of taking life for granted.
Recommended Free Tools
Dredd — September 1
For viewers seeking compact, hard-edged science fiction, Dredd is a particularly efficient choice. It delivers its dystopian action without asking you to catch up on a large cinematic universe or commit to a long series.
Super 8 — September 1
Super 8 combines a young ensemble, a suburban mystery and a nostalgic science-fiction adventure. Choose it when you want an accessible creature-feature atmosphere with a coming-of-age story at its center.
The Big Lebowski — September 1
The Coen brothers’ cult comedy is the month’s obvious rewatch pick. Its offbeat characters, tangled mystery and quotable deadpan humor make it a natural choice for a relaxed movie night or a return visit with friends.
V for Vendetta — September 1
This political action thriller adds a darker, more confrontational option to the September catalog. It suits viewers looking for dystopian action and political themes rather than comfort viewing. Its inclusion here refers to the US September 2024 catalog window, not guaranteed availability today.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — September 30
The month closes with a straightforward musical pick. If you want a lighter end-of-month watch built around ABBA songs, romance and bright ensemble energy, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is the natural choice.
More notable Prime Video viewing that month
The Grand Tour: One For The Road — September 13
The final Grand Tour road-trip special was scheduled for September 13. It is the best choice for viewers who want a recognizable Prime Video brand and non-fiction entertainment after the month’s fantasy series and scripted films. As a special, it is better approached as a single event than as a new season to binge.
Elementary, seasons 1–7 — September 14
All seven seasons of Elementary were listed for September 14, making this the month’s major long-form binge. The complete run is a very different proposition from a weekly Original: it offers a substantial procedural commitment for viewers who want Sherlock Holmes adaptations, recurring character development and episode-by-episode mysteries.
Because the full seven-season package arrived together, it belongs in a binge-watch plan rather than in the same category as a one-night movie or a weekly fantasy release.
The Money Game — September 10
The Money Game belongs on the sports-documentary side of the schedule. Choose it if you are more interested in athlete profiles and the business or personal pressures surrounding sports than in a scripted drama.

Recurring live sports on Prime Video
The September 2024 calendar also included recurring live-event programming, including WNBA on Prime Video, NWSL on Prime Video, Thursday Night Football, ONE Fight Night on Prime Video and PBC on Prime Video.

More than 100 titles were reported as joining Prime Video in the US on September 1, giving the month a substantial library refresh even though the schedule was comparatively light on new Prime Video Originals.
Rather than treating that large arrival as a list to complete, pick by mood:
- Science fiction: Super 8 or Galaxy Quest.
- Action: Dredd or V for Vendetta.
- Cult comedy: The Big Lebowski.
- Family viewing: Madagascar.
- Musical drama: In the Heights.
- Adventure: The Mummy.
- Classic suspense: The Usual Suspects.
- Warm, familiar comedy: Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
This is a selection strategy, not a claim that every September 1 addition is a must-watch. Catalog arrivals are rights windows, and a title’s presence in the 2024 calendar does not guarantee that it remains on Prime Video.

A practical September 2024 watch plan
- Start with the weekly event: Watch The Rings of Power Season 2 from its August 29 premiere and continue through September’s episodes.
- Choose a September 3 double feature: Pair the lighter Snack Shack with the sharper satire of The American Society of Magical Negroes.
- Set aside a family night: Try Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, then make room for Paddington 2 after September 26.
- Reserve a binge window: Start Elementary only if you want a long procedural commitment; all seven seasons are a substantial watch.
- Use the September 1 refresh selectively: Pick one title by mood instead of scrolling through the entire catalog.
- Check live listings separately: Sports events are recurring programming, not fixed movie or season drops.
