James Gill, MD, FCAP, made that statement in the College of American Pathologists’ March 7, 2025 explanation. Gill’s warning does not mean investigators learn nothing from remains. It means mummification can limit what the visual condition alone can reliably say about the time since death.
For Arakawa, the reported estimate of February 11 came from the date of her last email, not from mummification alone. The estimate should therefore be described as approximate rather than as an exact time of death.
How long were Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa dead before they were found?
Public reporting estimated that Arakawa died around February 11, 2025, and that Hackman died around February 18; both were found on February 26. The timeline’s two estimated death dates came from different evidence sources, so the dates should not be treated as equally precise measurements. Reuters reported that New Mexico chief medical investigator Heather Jarrell said:
“He was in an advanced state of Alzheimer’s and it is quite possible he was not aware she was deceased.”
Jarrell’s statement, reported in Reuters’ March 7 report, was about Hackman’s condition and the reported timeline. The statement does not establish intent, neglect, or the exact circumstances of either death. Reuters also reported that Hackman’s death was attributed to heart disease.
How does hantavirus spread, and what does the public record prove?
Hantaviruses are mainly spread by rodents, and exposure can occur through rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated nesting material. The public record supports Arakawa’s hantavirus diagnosis and the general rodent-transmission pathway, but it does not prove exactly how or where she encountered the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2024 hantavirus overview says hantavirus pulmonary syndrome may begin with flu-like symptoms and progress to severe respiratory disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2024), about 38% of people who develop respiratory symptoms may die from the disease. That is a population-level figure, not a measurement of Arakawa’s individual risk or proof about her exposure.
CBS News, reporting with the Associated Press, said Heather Jarrell described the mortality rate associated with the Southwest strain as 38%–50%. That figure belongs to the reported public-health context for the strain and should not be generalized into a case-specific probability.
