Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best Stremio add-ons are not all video sources. For most users, the right starting combination is Cinemeta for movie and TV organization plus OpenSubtitles for subtitles. Add WatchHub when you want to find where a title is legally available, Public Domain Movies for lawful classic films, and YouTube or Twitch for web and live content. Trakt and catalog power users can add The Movie Database Addon, AIOLists, or MyTrakt Sync, while Local Files is the best choice for videos you already own.
That distinction matters: Stremio is a metadata and streaming platform, not a service that supplies movies and television episodes itself. Add-ons provide catalogs, metadata, subtitles, links to external services, or access to a user’s own files. The Stremio add-on terms also make clear that community-add-on developers and users are responsible for the content they provide and its legality.
What makes a Stremio add-on worth installing?
Stremio add-ons fall into several different categories, and comparing them as if they all do the same job leads to bad recommendations:
- Metadata and catalogs: organize titles, posters, descriptions, episodes, genres, and related content.
- Subtitles: find subtitle files from an external subtitle service.
- Service discovery: show where a film or series may be available through legitimate providers.
- Web and live content: bring sources such as YouTube or Twitch into the Stremio interface.
- Personal lists: connect Trakt, TMDB, MDBList, or other list systems to Stremio.
- Personal media: expose compatible videos stored on your own device or network.
This list ranks usefulness for distinct jobs, not the number of playable links an add-on appears to produce. A community add-on can be useful without being official, permanently available, or appropriate in every country. Stremio says add-ons do not run code locally, but they still communicate with outside services. Those services have their own availability, privacy policies, logging practices, terms, and legal obligations.

1. Cinemeta: best for the default movie and TV experience
Cinemeta is the foundation of the Stremio interface for most users. It supplies the familiar title pages, posters, descriptions, episode organization, and discovery structure that make Stremio useful as a movie and television catalog. Stremio’s community-addon documentation treats Cinemeta as its main or default metadata experience, and other add-ons commonly use its catalog and identifiers.
Install Cinemeta first if you want a coherent library rather than a collection of disconnected sources. It is especially useful for browsing genres, finding related titles, opening a series at the correct season and episode, and giving other add-ons a recognizable title structure.
Important limitation: Cinemeta is a metadata and catalog layer. It should not be described as a guaranteed source of playable video. A title appearing in Cinemeta does not, by itself, mean that Stremio has a legal or working stream for it. The Cinemeta-related add-on documentation is useful background on its role in discovery and metadata.
Best combination: Cinemeta plus OpenSubtitles, with WatchHub or a verified legal source when you need to determine where a title can be watched.
2. OpenSubtitles: best subtitle add-on
OpenSubtitles for Stremio is the best general-purpose subtitle add-on for movies and series. It is an official Stremio add-on, and its landing page describes subtitle support for both films and television episodes. Stremio’s help guidance also directs users toward OpenSubtitles when subtitles are needed.
It is useful for accessibility, foreign-language films, documentaries with difficult audio, and episodes whose built-in subtitle options are missing. After installing it, select the available subtitle track from the playback controls when one is offered. Depending on the client and title, you may see multiple languages or release-specific options.
Subtitle results are not universal. Availability depends on the title, language, subtitle release, timing, and the external OpenSubtitles service. Stremio cannot create a subtitle file when no suitable subtitle exists. Stremio also recorded a hotfix for an OpenSubtitles API change in June 2026, illustrating both that the integration is maintained and that it depends on an outside API that can change.
Best combination: OpenSubtitles with Cinemeta. If subtitles are out of sync, try another release-specific subtitle rather than assuming the entire add-on is broken.

3. YouTube: best for trailers and official web video
The YouTube Stremio add-on is a legitimate complement to a movie and TV library. It is most useful for trailers, interviews, official channels, creator documentaries, educational videos, music, and other programming hosted on YouTube. It can keep web-based video discovery alongside your other Stremio catalogs.
Do not treat it as a replacement for a full movie-streaming catalog. Playback and availability are governed by YouTube’s own policies and terms, the uploader’s status, regional restrictions, advertising or account requirements, and whether a video remains online. A trailer may be available even when the corresponding full film is not.
Best for documentary viewers: use YouTube to follow official broadcasters, museums, universities, filmmakers, and documentary channels, while using WatchHub to investigate legitimate availability for a specific commercial title.
4. Twitch: best for live streams, gaming, and esports
Twitch on Stremio fills a different role from Cinemeta and YouTube. It is aimed at live streams, gaming, esports, creator broadcasts, events, and other real-time programming. If you want Stremio to cover live content as well as on-demand films and series, a Twitch add-on can be a sensible category-specific choice.

It is not a movie metadata add-on, and it should not be ranked highly merely because it is popular. Its value depends on whether you actually watch live channels. Stream availability, channel status, regional access, and playback behavior remain controlled by Twitch and the current add-on integration.
Because live-content catalogs and community manifests can change, verify the current Twitch listing in the official Stremio add-on catalog before installing. A listing or manifest can be removed, renamed, or become temporarily unavailable.
5. WatchHub: best for finding where to watch legally
WatchHub is valuable because it addresses a question that many Stremio lists overlook: where is this title legitimately available? Rather than acting as another unverified stream aggregator, it is best understood as a service-discovery tool that can point you toward available viewing options.
Use it after finding a title in Cinemeta. The result may depend on your country, the provider’s current catalog, whether you have a subscription or rental access, and changes made by the service since the listing was indexed. A result is therefore a lead to verify, not a permanent promise that a film is included with a particular subscription.
WatchHub is particularly useful for documentaries, whose rights and availability can vary sharply between countries and between rental, purchase, library, broadcaster, and subscription services. It also gives you a way to check legitimate options before looking elsewhere.
Best combination: Cinemeta for title discovery, WatchHub for service availability, and OpenSubtitles if the selected provider or source does not offer suitable subtitles.
6. Public Domain Movies: best for legal classic films
Public Domain Movies Stremio is one of the strongest recommendations for viewers who want a clear lawful-use case. It focuses on classic films and other material identified as public domain or otherwise appropriate for public access. Stremio says it is committed to identifying public-domain and orphaned films and television works, making this a more responsible choice than treating an unofficial stream source as the default.
Public-domain status is not automatically worldwide. Copyright rules differ by country, and the status can vary by individual work, restoration, soundtrack, translation, or version. A film identified as public domain in one jurisdiction may still be protected elsewhere. Verify the status and the source for your location, especially if you intend to redistribute or publicly screen the material.

7. The Movie Database Addon: best for richer metadata and custom catalogs
The Movie Database Addon is a community-developed metadata option for users who want more control than the default catalog provides. Its directory listing describes TMDB-based movie and TV metadata, customizable catalogs, multilingual support, favorites, watchlists, ratings, and IMDb integration.
That combination makes it useful for international viewers, catalog researchers, and power users who want to browse by a more specific set of lists or metadata fields. It can complement Cinemeta rather than replace it: Cinemeta remains the dependable starting layer for the ordinary Stremio experience, while TMDB-based catalogs can add alternative organization and discovery routes.

That status means you should re-open the listing and test installation before relying on it. Versions, integrations, and availability may change.

8. AIOLists: best for combining personal lists
AIOLists for Stremio is designed for people whose watchlists are spread across several services. The directory describes it as a stateless, open-source list-management add-on with unified search across Cinemeta, Trakt, and TMDB. It can also import Trakt and MDBList URLs and connect to Trakt for personal lists, watchlists, recommendations, trending titles, and popular content.
The practical advantage is consolidation. Instead of switching between several list systems to remember what you planned to watch, you can use one Stremio catalog to surface those collections. It is also useful for people who maintain custom lists by director, subject, era, country, or documentary theme.
Do not assume every feature works immediately after installation. Depending on the integration, you may need to connect an account, supply a list URL, or enter an API key. Treat those credentials and URLs carefully, and use only the configuration page and services you trust.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. MyTrakt Sync: best for Trakt watchlists and watch-state tools
MyTrakt Sync is a more focused choice for viewers who already use Trakt to organize their viewing. Its directory listing describes access to Trakt watchlists, collections, custom lists, trending content, calendars, genre filters, search, watch status, an up-next view, and a manual mark-as-watched function.
That makes it different from a basic metadata catalog. It is aimed at continuing a personal viewing workflow: seeing what is next, checking a calendar, returning to a custom list, or manually correcting watch status. Documentary viewers who track festival films, historical subjects, or director filmographies in Trakt may find this more useful than a generic catalog.
MyTrakt Sync is community-developed, not a built-in official Stremio feature. Its directory page reported a Checking manifest status at research time, so confirm that the current manifest and Trakt connection work before treating it as a permanent part of your setup. The listing’s described version and integrations should also be rechecked because community add-ons can change independently of Stremio.
10. Local Files: best for your own media library
Stremio Local Files is the clearest option when you already have compatible videos stored on your computer, phone, attached storage, or local network. Stremio’s terms describe a Local Files add-on that lets users watch their own local streamable content within Stremio. The files remain on the user’s device and are not made available to other users through this feature.

This is useful for home movies, legally downloaded videos, personal recordings, archival files, and media you have the right to store and play. It also avoids depending on a third-party catalog for material you already possess.
Local Files does not provide a catalog of commercial movies or television episodes. Playback depends on the file format, the device running Stremio, storage access, permissions, and—when files are on another device—the local-network setup. If a file does not appear, check that it is in a supported location and format and that the host device is available on the same network where required.
For the relevant terms and limitations, see Stremio’s add-on terms.
Which add-ons should you install together?
| Your goal | Recommended combination | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary movie and TV browsing | Cinemeta + OpenSubtitles | One gives you the catalog structure; the other supplies subtitle options. |
| Find a legal place to watch | Cinemeta + WatchHub + OpenSubtitles | Discover the title, check legitimate services, then look for subtitles where appropriate. |
| Classic or archival viewing | Public Domain Movies + Cinemeta | Focuses discovery on material with a clearer public-domain use case. |
| Trailers and creator documentaries | YouTube + Cinemeta | Keeps web video alongside structured movie and TV metadata. |
| Live channels and esports | Twitch plus the catalogs you already use | Adds live content without pretending Twitch is a movie database. |
| Trakt-centered organization | AIOLists or MyTrakt Sync + Cinemeta | AIOLists is broader for combining lists; MyTrakt Sync is more focused on Trakt views and watch state. |
| Personal video files | Local Files + Cinemeta where useful | Plays your own media while retaining Stremio’s broader discovery interface. |
Installing every available add-on is usually counterproductive. Duplicate catalogs can make search results noisy, community integrations can become stale, and every external service adds another point of failure. Start with two or three add-ons that match your actual viewing habits.

How to install Stremio add-ons
Stremio’s add-on documentation says signed-in users can install an add-on to their account and make it available across devices. Installation may be initiated from the Stremio catalog, the local client, a browser, or a copied manifest URL.
- Sign in to Stremio. Account-based installation is the simplest way to keep the same add-on setup available on supported devices.
- Open the add-on catalog or the add-on screen. Begin with the official catalog and the official pages linked above where available.
- Choose the add-on and review its description. Check whether it is official or community-developed, what data or account connection it requires, and whether it is a metadata, subtitle, discovery, live-content, or personal-media tool.
- Configure it before installing when configuration is offered. AIOLists and Trakt-related tools may need list URLs, account connections, or API keys. Do not enter credentials into an unrelated or suspicious page.
- Select Install. If Stremio presents a confirmation prompt, verify the add-on name and requested configuration before accepting.
- Check the result on a title that matches the add-on’s job. Test Cinemeta with a known film, OpenSubtitles with a title that should have subtitles, WatchHub with a current release, or Local Files with a compatible personal video.
- Recheck community add-ons periodically. A manifest can stop responding, integrations can change, and a directory status such as Checking is a reason to verify before depending on the add-on.
The official installation documentation has more detail on installing through a client, browser, or manifest URL: Stremio add-on installation documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Official versus community add-ons
Stremio distinguishes official add-ons, developed by Stremio and automatically available, from community add-ons developed independently through its open-source add-on protocol and installed manually. A community add-on appearing in a directory is not automatically an official Stremio product.
That distinction is especially important for The Movie Database Addon, AIOLists, MyTrakt Sync, Public Domain Movies, and any current Twitch listing that is community-maintained. Their usefulness can be real, but their uptime, ownership, support, privacy practices, and compatibility are separate questions.
Before installing a community add-on, look for a clear description, a functioning manifest, recent maintenance signals, and a configuration flow that makes sense. Avoid assuming that a large catalog is safe, lawful, accurate, or stable. Do not treat torrent indexes, debrid services, or third-party stream aggregators as inherently legal or safe; their copyright status, provider terms, regional law, privacy implications, and operation require separate verification.
Privacy, legality, and availability
Use add-ons with the same care you would use the websites and services behind them. Stremio’s terms place responsibility for community-add-on content and legality on the independent developer and user, and they warn that availability is not guaranteed. External providers can change APIs, remove videos, restrict countries, require accounts, or stop operating.
Stremio’s materials state that it does not collect history or logs of the add-ons or sources used for streaming, but they also describe account, device, analytics, and third-party-service data practices. That is not a guarantee that every external add-on service has the same policy. Read the relevant service’s terms and privacy documentation before connecting Trakt, submitting an API key, or using a service that requires an account.
For copyright, the safest general approach is to use official services, legitimate service-discovery tools, public-domain material whose status is appropriate for your jurisdiction, and files you own or are licensed to use. A Stremio title page or catalog entry does not establish that a stream is authorized.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What to do when an add-on fails
A title appears, but there is no playable video
First identify the add-on’s function. Cinemeta, TMDB, AIOLists, MyTrakt Sync, and WatchHub may organize or identify content without supplying a playable stream. A metadata result is not proof that a video source exists. Use WatchHub to check legitimate availability, or use Local Files for media you already own.
Subtitles are missing or out of sync
Check the language and try another subtitle entry that matches the particular release. Subtitle files can differ in frame rate, cut, episode version, and timing. If no suitable entry appears, the external service may not have one available. A Stremio update cannot create a missing subtitle file.
A community add-on will not install
Return to the current directory listing and check its manifest status. If it reports Checking, fails to load, or has recently changed, do not assume the problem is your device. Try the official listing or configuration page, remove a broken installation if necessary, and look for a maintained alternative that performs the same narrow job.
Trakt lists do not appear
Review the account connection, list URL, visibility settings, and any required API key. AIOLists and MyTrakt Sync do not necessarily expose every Trakt feature without configuration. Reauthorize only through the service’s intended flow, and avoid pasting credentials into an unverified manifest page.

Playback buffers or stops
Buffering is not automatically an add-on problem. The external source, provider capacity, network connection, device performance, regional access, or file compatibility may be responsible. Test a known legitimate source, compare another device or network, and remember that no add-on can guarantee buffer-free playback on every device.
Local Files do not appear
Confirm that the file remains on the host device, the app has the required storage access, the file is in a compatible format, and the devices can reach one another on the local network. Local Files is for your own media; it will not populate a commercial catalog when no personal file is present.
Television setup: hardware is optional
Stremio can be used on supported television setups, but you do not need to buy extra hardware simply to install an add-on. If your television does not offer a suitable Stremio app, an Android TV streaming device is an optional way to run the app on the TV. Check the device’s current operating-system compatibility, Stremio support, available storage, and included accessories before buying; do not assume that every Android TV product offers the same experience.
For a television setup, install and test the add-ons on the account first, then confirm that the TV client has synchronized the configuration. A remote-control interface is convenient for browsing, but it will not solve an unavailable manifest, missing subtitle, unsupported file, or region-limited source.
Keeping this list current
Add-on manifests, versions, integrations, ownership, and regional availability can change quickly. Re-open the official Stremio add-on catalog and each community listing immediately before installation or publication.
This is particularly important for The Movie Database Addon and MyTrakt Sync: their directory pages showed a Checking manifest status in the research snapshot used for this article. Their described features remain useful for choosing what to investigate, but a directory description should not be treated as a guarantee that every feature is working today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Stremio provide movies and TV episodes by itself?
No. Stremio provides the platform and metadata experience; add-ons provide catalogs, subtitles, external-service links, web or live content, or access to your own files. A title appearing in Cinemeta does not guarantee that a playable or authorized stream is available.
Which Stremio add-ons should I install first?
Start with Cinemeta for movie and TV organization and OpenSubtitles for subtitles. Add WatchHub if you want to find legitimate viewing options, then install YouTube, Twitch, Trakt tools, Public Domain Movies, or Local Files only when their specific functions match your needs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are community Stremio add-ons official and safe?
No. Community add-ons are independently developed. A directory listing does not make one official, permanently available, safe, or legal in every country. Review the developer information, manifest status, configuration requirements, external-service terms, and copyright status before using one.
Why does Cinemeta show a title without a stream?
Cinemeta is primarily a metadata and catalog add-on. It can organize a title, poster, description, and episodes without supplying a playable source. Use a legitimate provider or your own Local Files library for playback.
Can I use Stremio add-ons on multiple devices?
Stremio’s installation documentation says signed-in users can install add-ons to their account and make them available across devices. Some integrations still require their own account connection, list URL, API key, or device-specific setup.
The Bottom Line
For most people, install Cinemeta and OpenSubtitles first. Use WatchHub and Public Domain Movies for more responsible discovery and viewing, YouTube or Twitch for web and live programming, the Trakt and TMDB tools for personal organization, and Local Files for media you already own. Treat community add-ons as changeable third-party software, not as official guarantees of legality, availability, or playback quality.
