That makes Premium the practical one-subscription choice if you want every released series. The original show is no longer on Netflix U.S.; it left the service on June 19, 2025.

Which Paramount+ plan do you need?
As of August 11, 2026, Paramount+ lists its U.S. plans at:
- Essential: $8.99 per month. This includes the original Dexter and New Blood according to Paramount’s franchise guide. Paramount describes Essential as including selected SHOWTIME series, so it should not be assumed to include every SHOWTIME title or every Dexter series.
- Premium: $13.99 per month. This includes the SHOWTIME collection and is the plan required for Original Sin and Resurrection.
If you only want to watch the original eight-season series and then New Blood, Essential is the lower-cost option identified by Paramount. If you want the entire currently released story—including the prequel and the newest sequel—Premium is the straightforward choice. Check Paramount’s signup page before subscribing because prices and plan terms are subject to change.
Why did Dexter leave Netflix?
The original Dexter returned to Netflix in the United States in June 2024 under a limited licensing arrangement. That U.S. license ended on June 19, 2025, after approximately one year, so Dexter is not currently on Netflix U.S.
Paramount owns the underlying SHOWTIME franchise, which is why the shows are now concentrated on Paramount+ in the United States. This was a licensing change rather than the end of legal access to the series.

Netflix availability is territory-specific. In more than 30 international Netflix markets, removal notices associated with the show pointed to departures on March 30 or March 31, 2026. Those dates do not establish availability in the United States, and viewers should check their local Netflix catalog rather than applying a U.S. or international report to another country.
What is the best order to watch Dexter?
Release order: best for most first-time viewers
- Dexter, Seasons 1–8
- Dexter: New Blood, Season 1
- Dexter: Original Sin, Season 1
- Dexter: Resurrection, Season 1
Release order preserves the reveals and character history as the franchise originally presented them. It also keeps the direct continuation intact: New Blood comes before Resurrection.
Chronological order: best if timeline matters most
- Dexter: Original Sin, Season 1
- Dexter, Seasons 1–8
- Dexter: New Blood, Season 1
- Dexter: Resurrection, Season 1
Original Sin is set in the 1990s, before the events of the original series. However, watching it first can reveal background information that the original show expected viewers to learn later. For that reason, chronological order is a valid rewatch strategy, but release order is safer for newcomers.
What must you watch before Resurrection?
You should watch New Blood before Resurrection. Resurrection is its direct continuation: Paramount describes it as beginning after Dexter survives the events of New Blood and travels to New York City in search of his son, Harrison.

- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Original Sin is optional preparation for Resurrection. It is a prequel rather than a continuation, so it is not required to understand the immediate plot handoff. For the cleanest first-time experience, watch the original series, then New Blood, then Resurrection; return to Original Sin afterward if you want more franchise backstory.
Dexter: Resurrection is already available
The wording “watch before the spinoff” is now out of date. Dexter: Resurrection premiered on July 11, 2025, and its first season contains 10 episodes. It is available on Paramount+ Premium in the United States.
The series continues after New Blood and follows Dexter as he heads to New York City in search of Harrison. It is not an upcoming spinoff awaiting its first season; Season 1 has already been released.
What is the status of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2?
Paramount+ officially renewed Dexter: Resurrection for Season 2 on October 8, 2025, and the writers’ room opened at that time. Production began in 2026, and Paramount promotional material confirms that the second season is in development.

As of August 11, 2026, Paramount+ had not announced an exact U.S. premiere date or a definitive public release window. Reports suggesting an October 2026 or fall 2026 launch should therefore be treated as projections, not confirmed scheduling. Season 2 is also not part of the available Season 1 physical-media sets.
Can you watch Dexter without a Paramount+ subscription?
Buy physical editions
Streaming rights can move again, so physical media is the most durable alternative for viewers who want long-term access. Current U.S. retail listings include the Dexter complete series Blu-ray and DVD editions covering the original eight seasons. Blu-ray and DVD are separate formats, and retailer pricing and stock can change.
There are also physical DVD and Blu-ray editions of Dexter: Resurrection Season 1. Those releases cover the first season only; they do not include the unreleased Season 2.
Buy digital seasons
Transactional stores can be useful if you prefer to purchase individual seasons rather than maintain a subscription. A current U.S. availability check identified the Apple TV Store and Fandango At Home as purchase options for at least the first season of the original Dexter. Digital rights differ by season, store, territory, and bundle, so verify the specific season or complete-series listing before buying.
Use a Paramount-branded channel
Availability checks have also listed Paramount+ through channel offerings such as the Paramount+ Amazon Channel, Paramount+ Apple TV Channel, and Paramount+ Roku Premium Channel. These are separate subscription or billing routes, and the catalog, plan benefits, and cancellation process can vary by platform. If your goal is to watch every Dexter series, confirm that the channel subscription provides the Premium/SHOWTIME access needed for Original Sin and Resurrection.
Quick decision guide
- Want only the original Dexter? Start with Paramount+ Essential, or look for a digital or physical purchase of the series.
- Want the original series and New Blood? Paramount+ Essential is listed as sufficient for those two shows.
- Want all four released series? Choose Paramount+ Premium, subject to current plan terms.
- Want to go straight to Resurrection? Watch New Blood first. Original Sin is optional.
- Want access that is less exposed to licensing changes? Consider the complete-series Blu-ray/DVD or digital purchases, checking the exact edition and season.
