In the comic continuity, “Invincible: All Characters Fates at the End of the Comic” ends with Mark Grayson alive as a reformed Viltrumite emperor beside Eve, Terra, and Marky. Nolan, Oliver, Thragg, Battle Beast, and many heroes die, while Robot survives only as a brain in a jar. The principal finale is Invincible #144, published February 14, 2018.

Full-series spoilers follow. The article covers the main Image Comics story from issue #1 through the principal ending in #144. The comic’s final pages are surprisingly hopeful, but the route to that future includes Robot’s authoritarian takeover, Nolan’s death, Oliver’s sacrifice, Thragg’s final war, and several unresolved character histories.

The animated adaptation is separate and ongoing. Comic-continuity outcomes should not be treated as confirmed outcomes for the television series.

Key takeaways

  • Image Comics’ official issue page identifies Invincible #144, published February 14, 2018, as the final issue and the conclusion of The End of All Things.
  • Mark Grayson survives, becomes emperor of the Viltrumites, reforms the empire into a force for peace, and remains with Eve 500 years later.
  • Nolan and Oliver die in the final war, while Thragg, Battle Beast, Anissa, Onaan, Conquest, Thaedus, and many other major combatants also receive permanent deaths.
  • Robot survives Mark’s defeat as a brain in a jar, but his apparent advisory role is not a redemption: later clarification makes Robot responsible for Immortal’s future tyranny.
  • Terra becomes the second Invincible, Marky becomes Kid Invincible, and the former Viltrumite Empire eventually replaces conquest with protection and humanitarian intervention.

Scope: Full-series spoilers follow. This article covers the completed main comic continuity, not the still-running animated adaptation.

What is the actual ending of the Invincible comic?

The actual comic ending is a transition from wartime survival to uneasy, long-term reform. Mark wins the Viltrumite war, inherits the empire from Nolan, removes Robot from power on Earth, and spends the far-future epilogue building a peaceful interplanetary order with Eve.

The principal numbered story ends with Invincible #144. Image Comics’ official release page labels the issue the “Final issue” and places it at the end of The End of All Things, with a publication date of February 14, 2018. Some later franchise material uses a 146-issue count; the safest explanation is that the larger number includes specials or related material. For the central story analyzed here, #144 is the unambiguous finale.

The finale is hopeful without pretending that the damage can be erased. Nolan and Oliver are dead, Robot’s regime leaves a dangerous legacy, and the Viltrumites are not destroyed as a people. Instead, Mark has to decide whether the empire can be transformed without repeating the violence that created it.

How does the ending unfold?

  1. Robot takes Earth. After Mark returns from the alternate universe, Rudy Connors kills Cecil Stedman, attacks Eve, and imposes an authoritarian system that presents itself as a rational utopia. Crime, poverty, and disorder appear to decline, which briefly persuades Mark that Robot’s rule may be working. Other heroes, including Immortal, Dupli-Kate, and Monster Girl, resist the regime, while Black Samson and other heroes are killed or removed.
  2. Thragg launches his final war. Thragg commands an army of Thraxan–Viltrumite hybrids and attacks across several worlds. His children become weapons and commanders, but Oliver’s infiltration and the wider Coalition resistance weaken Thragg’s position.
  3. Oliver dies protecting Mark’s family. Thragg fatally impales Oliver while Oliver protects Mark, Eve, and Terra. Oliver’s Coalition funeral becomes one of the war’s defining emotional moments and deepens Mark’s determination to end Thragg’s campaign.
  4. Nolan dies and names Mark emperor. Thragg mortally wounds Nolan during the final conflict. Nolan survives long enough to name Mark the next emperor and instruct him to change the Viltrumites rather than repeat their history of conquest.
  5. Mark kills Thragg. Mark defeats Thragg in their final battle by biting through his throat. Thragg is then pulled into the Sun and incinerated, ending the central Viltrumite threat.
  6. Mark ends Robot’s rule without executing him. After taking the throne, Mark returns to Earth and removes Robot from power. Mark preserves Robot’s brain in a jar and places him in an advisory position beside Immortal, whom Mark appoints as GDA director.
  7. The future becomes cautiously hopeful. The epilogue follows Mark, Eve, Terra, Marky, and the reformed Viltrumites into a peaceful era. The Coalition of Planets eventually disbands because the Viltrumites are no longer the conquering enemy it was created to oppose.

The broad sequence is documented in the full-series comic reference and in a 2026 ending explanation from Looper. The most important distinction is that Mark does not simply defeat a villain and retire: Mark inherits the institution that produced the villain and tries to change its purpose.

Why does Mark become emperor after Nolan dies?

Mark becomes emperor because Nolan formally designates him as his successor while dying from Thragg’s wounds. Nolan’s request gives Mark both the legal claim and the moral responsibility to reshape Viltrumite society.

Nolan does not ask Mark to preserve the old empire. Nolan asks Mark to ensure that the Viltrumites stop treating other civilizations as subjects and begin using their strength to protect them. Mark therefore turns the empire into a network devoted to peace, assistance, and humanitarian intervention.

That decision also explains why the Viltrumites survive the ending. The war destroys Thragg’s faction, but it does not require the extermination of every Viltrumite. Surviving Viltrumites, including former enemies, are absorbed into the new order. Mark, Marky, and Terra’s family line remain connected to Earth while the wider Viltrumite population leaves Earth and participates in the reformed empire.

What happens to Robot after Mark defeats him?

Robot survives as a brain in a jar and becomes an adviser to Immortal, but the arrangement is a morally unstable compromise rather than a clean redemption.

Mark has a practical reason for not killing Rudy: Robot’s intelligence and knowledge remain useful, and Mark is trying to replace authoritarian rule with a workable government. Immortal becomes GDA director and is initially expected to rule peacefully with Robot’s advice.

The future shown elsewhere in the series changes the meaning of that compromise. According to the clarification discussed in the report on Robert Kirkman’s #144 letters material, Robot’s preserved brain eventually manipulates Immortal and contributes to the dystopian future in which Immortal becomes a tyrant. Time-traveling Mark later kills Immortal at Immortal’s own request and separates Immortal’s body parts so that his regenerative ability cannot bring him back.

Robot therefore survives the immediate finale but does not escape moral responsibility. The comic’s ending leaves him alive, useful, and dangerous at the same time.

What does the 500-year epilogue reveal?

The 500-year epilogue reveals that Mark and Eve remain together and that the reformed Viltrumite Empire has become broadly peaceful. The distant future is not a return to normal Earth life; Mark and Eve are still active in an interplanetary civilization that routinely helps other worlds.

Marky has come to terms with his origins and develops a better relationship with Mark. Marky is Mark and Anissa’s son, not Eve’s child, and he adopts the identity Kid Invincible. Terra is Mark and Eve’s daughter and eventually becomes the second Invincible. Keeping those two family lines separate matters because the final-era material gives each child a distinct place in the legacy.

Eve’s apparent death is also not permanent. Eve reaches apparent old age, but her powers reactivate when she is about to die and restore her body. The result is that Eve can remain alive for the duration of Mark’s Viltrumite lifespan. The ending therefore treats Eve’s aging as a temporary biological reset rather than a final death.

Debbie does not share that longevity. Debbie lives through the main conflict and spends years as a grandmother, but she dies naturally before the 500-year scenes. The final pages are consequently both a family continuation and a reminder that not every human character can follow Mark and Eve into the distant future.

What happens to the principal heroes and supporting characters?

The following table separates confirmed deaths from survival and from characters whose last known status is all the comic actually establishes. The comic does not provide an official final-status ledger for every named person.

Mark Grayson / Invincible Survives Mark becomes emperor of the Viltrumites, reforms the empire, removes Robot from Earth’s government, and remains alive with Eve 500 years later. Comic-ending reference
Samantha Eve Wilkins / Atom Eve Survives Eve marries Mark. Her powers restore her body when apparent old age reaches its endpoint, allowing her to share Mark’s long lifespan. Comic-ending reference
Terra Grayson Survives Mark and Eve’s daughter becomes the second Invincible and represents the next generation of the family legacy.
Markus “Marky” Murphy / Markus Grayson Survives Mark and Anissa’s son becomes Kid Invincible, accepts more of his complicated origins, and improves his relationship with Mark.
Nolan Grayson / Omni-Man Dies Thragg mortally wounds Nolan in the final war. Nolan names Mark emperor before dying and tells Mark to change the Viltrumites.
Debbie Grayson Dies naturally Debbie survives the major conflicts and becomes a grandmother, but she dies before the 500-year epilogue.
Oliver Grayson / Kid Omni-Man Dies Thragg fatally impales Oliver while Oliver protects Mark, Eve, and Terra. Oliver receives a formal Coalition funeral.
Rudolph “Rudy” Connors / Robot Survives, imprisoned Mark reduces Robot to a brain in a jar. Robot advises Immortal, later manipulates him, and contributes to the dystopian future shown in the story. Kirkman clarification report
Cecil Stedman Dies Robot kills Cecil during the takeover of Earth.
The Immortal Survives the finale; later dies Mark appoints Immortal GDA director. Robot eventually drives Immortal toward tyranny; a time-traveling Mark later kills Immortal at Immortal’s request and prevents resurrection by separating his body parts.
Dupli-Kate Survives Dupli-Kate marries Immortal, has children with him, and later opposes Robot’s rule.
Amanda / Monster Girl Survives Monster Girl rebels against Robot after learning that Robot tried to have her son executed. Her fate after the distant epilogue is not specified.
Black Samson Dies Black Samson is killed during Robot’s takeover.
Rex Splode Dies earlier Rex sacrifices himself during the Invincible War to destroy a hostile alternate Invincible. His death remains permanent.
Bulletproof / Zandale Randolph Last known alive Bulletproof sides with Robot during the coup and receives facial scarring during Immortal’s prison escape. The 500-year epilogue does not give him a terminal fate.
Shrinking Ray Dies In the comic continuity, Shrinking Ray is consumed by Komodo Dragon. The comic character differs from the animated adaptation’s later version, Shrinking Rae.
Shapesmith Dies Robot kills Shapesmith after the Sequid crisis.
Darkwing II / Night Boy Survives Darkwing II becomes trapped in the Shadow-verse for decades during the Invincible conflict but eventually escapes by the finale.
Allen the Alien Survives Allen becomes leader of the Coalition after Thaedus dies, leads the war against Thragg, and recognizes that he has developed into a leader. The Coalition later disbands.
Thaedus Dies Thragg kills Thaedus during a failed sneak attack on Viltrum.
Space Racer Last known alive Space Racer remains a Coalition ally through the major war. The ending does not state a terminal death or later individual fate.
Art Rosenbaum Last known alive Art remains the Graysons’ trusted tailor and ally. The epilogue does not assign him a separate final fate.
Donald Ferguson Last known alive Donald continues as a GDA android and recurring operational contact. The ending does not provide a separate terminal fate.
William Clockwell Survives William remains in a committed relationship with Rick Sheridan. The 500-year epilogue does not revisit him.
Rick Sheridan Survives Rick recovers from the Reanimen process and becomes William’s partner.
Amber Bennett Survives Amber is later shown in a happy relationship with someone else. The ending does not revisit her in the distant future.

These outcomes belong to the comic continuity. A character not shown in the final pages is not automatically dead; “last known alive” is the accurate description when the story does not establish more.

Who survives the Viltrumite war?

The Viltrumite war ends with Thragg’s faction defeated, but several Viltrumites and hybrid children survive and become part of Mark’s postwar order.

Character or group End status Significance
Thragg Dies Mark kills Thragg by biting through his throat, after which Thragg is pulled into the Sun and incinerated.
Battle Beast / Thokk Dies Thragg kills Battle Beast after their prolonged duel. Battle Beast receives the warrior’s death he sought.
Anissa Dies Anissa dies defending Eve after a Ragnarr kills her. Before dying, Anissa leaves Eve a message concerning Marky.
Ursaal Survives Ursaal realizes that Thragg treats his children as disposable weapons and orders her surviving siblings to surrender.
Onaan Dies Mark kills Onaan while protecting Terra.
Conquest Dies Mark eventually kills Conquest during the Viltrumite War after Conquest survives an earlier defeat and imprisonment.
General Kregg Survives Kregg becomes one of the Viltrumites who adopts human relationships and family life.
Lucan Survives Lucan forms a relationship with a human woman and has children.
Thula Last known alive Thula survives the major war material, but the core ending does not provide a separate terminal fate.
Thragg’s surviving hybrid children Mixed Many die in the war. Ursaal and other surviving siblings surrender and are incorporated into the post-Thragg order.
The Viltrumites Survive as a people The empire is not destroyed. Mark changes its purpose from conquest to protection and humanitarian intervention.
The Coalition of Planets Wins, then disbands The Coalition defeats Thragg, but the peaceful future eventually makes the defensive alliance unnecessary.

Oliver’s death, Nolan’s succession, and Thragg’s defeat are the war’s central turning points. The full comic reference records the larger chain of events, while the final-era explanation makes clear that the postwar order is integration rather than total Viltrumite eradication.

What happens to the major villains?

The major villains do not all receive the same kind of conclusion. Some die permanently, some have cyclical deaths because of cloning technology, and some simply remain last known alive because the finale does not return to them.

Villain or faction End status What the comic establishes
Angstrom Levy Dies Robot kills Angstrom in the alternate universe after double-crossing Mark. Robot also kills the surviving mohawk alternate Mark in that universe.
Dinosaurus / Dr. David Anders Dies by request After helping Mark pursue planetary improvements through increasingly dangerous methods, Dinosaurus asks Mark to kill him so that he cannot relapse into destructive thinking. Mark complies.
The Mauler Twins Unresolved cycle The Maulers die and return repeatedly through cloning. The final story does not give a clean terminal death for the surviving Mauler, who remains associated with advanced technology and Robot’s regime.
Doc Seismic Dies One of Robot’s drones kills Doc Seismic after Doc becomes a molten-lava entity.
Titan Last known active Titan remains a criminal power player. The main ending does not give him a definitive death or redemption.
King Lizard Last known alive King Lizard is the only known surviving member of the Lizard League after the team’s destruction. His later fate is not materially revisited.
Komodo Dragon Dies Komodo Dragon dies after biting Rex’s explosive hand; a successor later uses the Komodo Dragon name.
Alternative Invincible variants Mostly dead Many variants die in the Invincible War. Others are sent to a devastated universe and die through violence or cannibalism, while Robot later kills the surviving mohawk variant.
The Flaxans Regime overthrown The Flaxan dictatorship is overthrown by Robot and Monster Girl, but the dimension’s later political struggle becomes part of Robot’s authoritarian decline.
The Sequids Defeated or contained The Sequid invasion of Mars is defeated or contained. Shapesmith, who accidentally helped enable the crisis, is later killed by Robot.

What happens to the Guardians of the Globe?

The original Guardians of the Globe are already dead long before the final issue. Omni-Man kills Darkwing, War Woman, Aquarus, Red Rush, Green Ghost, Martian Man, and the first Immortal at the beginning of the series.

The Mauler Twins revive the first Immortal, but the other original Guardians remain dead. Later Guardians rosters are repeatedly disrupted by war and by Robot’s coup. Surviving heroes continue resisting Robot, but the team’s institutional continuity is broken rather than restored to its earlier form.

The distinction between original and later Guardians is important: saying “the Guardians die” is too broad. The original team is murdered by Omni-Man; later members have individual fates, including Black Samson’s death, Immortal and Dupli-Kate’s survival, and Monster Girl’s rebellion.

Which character fates remain unresolved?

Several characters are not given a separate final-page fate. The accurate answer for those characters is “last known alive,” “last known aligned with the postwar order,” or “not revisited by the 500-year epilogue,” not an invented death.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Space Racer, Art Rosenbaum, and Donald Ferguson: all remain alive through their last known appearances, but the distant future does not provide individual updates.
  • William Clockwell, Rick Sheridan, and Amber Bennett: their personal stories reach stable points, but the comic does not show what happens to them centuries later.
  • Bulletproof and Thula: both survive the known major conflicts, although neither receives a terminal epilogue fate.
  • Titan and King Lizard: both remain associated with the broader criminal world, without a definitive death or redemption in the ending.
  • Minor heroes, GDA personnel, alien allies, former criminals, and unnamed casualties: the finale does not attempt to account for every person who appeared across the run.

The absence of a character from the last pages is a narrative omission, not proof of death. This limitation is why a responsible “all character fates” guide must include an unresolved category.

Is the animated Invincible ending the same as the comic?

No. The animated series is a separate, ongoing adaptation and has not already reached the comic’s ending.

As of the supplied 2026 research timestamp, Prime Video lists Season 4, while Skybound’s June 2026 announcement says Season 5 is planned for 2027 and that Season 6 has been renewed. The adaptation changes timing, survival, characterization, and sometimes character identity, so comic fates should not be presented as confirmed animated-series outcomes.

The Shrinking Ray/Shrinking Rae distinction illustrates the problem. Comic Shrinking Ray is consumed by Komodo Dragon, while the animated adaptation uses Shrinking Rae as a different version of the character. Viewers should therefore label every outcome as either comic continuity or animated continuity.

Where can you read the ending?

Readers who want the entire final stretch in one paperback can use the Invincible Compendium Vol. 3. Image Comics identifies that volume as collecting issues #97–144, so it contains Robot’s takeover, the Thragg war, Nolan’s death, Mark’s succession, and the 500-year epilogue. The volume contains the story itself, not a separate official encyclopedia of every character.

For collectors who prefer a premium hardcover, Invincible Complete Library Vol. 6 collects the final material through Ultimate Collection volumes 11 and 12, covering issues #121–144. That edition is especially useful for readers focused on the final war and the epilogue, while Compendium Vol. 3 covers the broader late-series buildup.

What Invincible collectibles fit a character-fate guide?

Fans who want a physical reminder of the characters can browse official Invincible merchandise, including documented categories such as books, apparel, pins, plush, and figures. Skybound has specifically documented Invincible Nendoroid, Funko Pop, Diamond Select figures, an official art book, and Sequid plush. Availability and prices can change, so current stock should be checked before publication or purchase.

The most relevant collectible choice depends on the reader’s interest: Compendium Vol. 3 is the practical way to reread the full ending stretch, Complete Library Vol. 6 is the premium final hardcover, and character figures or plush are better suited to fans who want to commemorate specific survivors or villains.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The comic ends with Mark and Eve alive 500 years later, Terra and Marky carrying the family legacy, and Mark ruling a reformed Viltrumite Empire. Nolan, Oliver, Thragg, and many heroes die, while Robot survives in a brain jar whose influence helps create a future tyranny. The ending is hopeful, but it is not a clean reset.
