Most games that appear “blacked out” on NFL Sunday Ticket are unavailable because Sunday Ticket is primarily an out-of-market package. It carries qualifying Sunday-afternoon regular-season games that are not being shown on the local CBS or FOX affiliate in your current viewing area. If a game is local, nationally televised, preseason, postseason, or assigned to another exclusive distributor, Sunday Ticket may not provide it.
That does not necessarily mean the NFL has imposed a traditional stadium or ticket-sales blackout. In many cases, the game is available through your local station, an authorized TV provider, an over-the-air antenna, or the separate streaming service that owns that game’s broadcast rights.
What NFL Sunday Ticket is—and what it is not
NFL Sunday Ticket is designed to show out-of-market Sunday-afternoon regular-season games. “Out of market” means games that are outside the local broadcast territory associated with your current location. It is not a promise that every NFL game will be available through one package every Sunday.
The distinction is easiest to understand this way:

This local-versus-out-of-market division is the central explanation for most Sunday Ticket blackout messages. YouTube’s product descriptions distinguish Sunday Ticket’s out-of-market coverage from local CBS and FOX programming, which is supplied through the underlying YouTube TV service or another authorized source. 1. The game is being broadcast locally
Suppose you live in a team’s local broadcast territory and that team’s Sunday-afternoon game is assigned to the local FOX or CBS affiliate. Sunday Ticket generally will not carry that same local feed. The local station—not Sunday Ticket—is the authorized source for the game in your area.
Depending on your setup, you may be able to watch it through:
- the local CBS or FOX station included with YouTube TV;
- a cable, satellite, or other authorized television provider that carries the local affiliate; or
- an over-the-air antenna, if the station’s signal reaches your home.
A standalone Sunday Ticket subscription does not itself provide local broadcast channels. This is why someone can pay for Sunday Ticket and still need a separate way to receive a game shown locally. [CIT-001] [CIT-002] [CIT-004]
2. The game belongs to a different broadcast window
Sunday Ticket is not a general NFL streaming pass. A game’s day and broadcast assignment matter.
National games
Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, and other nationally televised games are distributed through their applicable national network or platform. They are not automatically added to Sunday Ticket simply because they are NFL games.
Thursday and exclusive streaming games
Thursday Night Football and games assigned to an exclusive streaming partner must be watched through the service holding those rights. NFL games can also appear on different platforms for international, special-event, or other distribution arrangements. The official NFL viewing guidance identifies separate destinations for local, primetime, Thursday, international, and other game windows. [CIT-005]

Preseason and postseason games
The standalone Sunday Ticket product is focused on qualifying out-of-market Sunday-afternoon regular-season games. It generally does not include preseason or postseason games, and locally or nationally broadcast games are outside that package’s core scope. [CIT-002] [CIT-003]
3. Your current location determines availability
YouTube determines game availability using your current viewing area, not merely the billing address or the location where you originally subscribed. The available lineup can change when you travel or move.
For example, a game may be available through Sunday Ticket while you are traveling outside a team’s local market, then disappear from Sunday Ticket when you return home to that team’s broadcast territory. That change can be correct: the local broadcast rules follow the viewing location.
Location data can also be wrong or incomplete. YouTube may require permission to access your device’s location or ask you to verify the playback area. Correcting an inaccurate location can restore the games that should be available, but it cannot override a legitimate local broadcast restriction. [CIT-003] [CIT-006]
4. A contractual or regional restriction may apply
YouTube’s paid-service terms state that some programming may be subject to local or regional blackout and therefore may be unavailable. The terms also give the NFL discretion over the programming included in Sunday Ticket and allow programming or related materials to change.
In practical terms, an explicit blackout notice can reflect a rights or distribution restriction rather than a broken app, missing subscription, or problem with the television. Partner agreements involving the NFL, networks, local stations, and distributors can determine where and how a game is shown. [CIT-007]

5. A location or account problem may look like a blackout
Not every unexpected unavailability is a rights restriction. If the games listed do not match your actual location, check the account and playback-area settings before assuming the package is working as intended.
Location troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the Google account. Make sure you are signed in to the account that purchased or has access to Sunday Ticket.
- Check the current playback area. Review YouTube TV or YouTube’s location information and update it if you have moved.
- Allow location access. On a phone, tablet, or computer, enable the relevant browser or app permission when YouTube requests it.
- Complete location verification. Follow the on-screen verification process rather than entering a false location.
- Check the game’s broadcast window. Confirm whether it is a local CBS/FOX game, a national broadcast, an exclusive stream, or a qualifying Sunday Ticket game.
- Test the local source. If the game is local, open the local CBS or FOX channel through your authorized provider instead of looking for it in the Sunday Ticket section.
- Contact YouTube support if the location is clearly wrong. Provide the actual viewing location and the exact error or blackout message.
YouTube notes that content restrictions can vary with current or home location, the content itself, the device, and restrictions imposed by league or network partners. Where to watch a game that Sunday Ticket does not carry
Local CBS or FOX through an authorized provider
If the game is assigned to your local CBS or FOX affiliate, use a television provider that carries that station. The underlying YouTube TV service includes local and national programming in markets where the relevant channels are available, while Sunday Ticket supplies the separate out-of-market component. Availability depends on your market and the provider’s channel lineup. [CIT-003]
Over-the-air television with an antenna
An antenna may be a practical alternative for a local CBS or FOX broadcast—and potentially local NBC or ABC programming as well—without relying on a pay-TV channel package. It is not a way to bypass Sunday Ticket restrictions; it simply receives a broadcast that is legally available over the air in your area.

If you have already confirmed that an antenna is appropriate but the signal is weak or must travel through a long cable run, a TV antenna amplifier may help in some installations. It is not a universal fix: an amplifier cannot create a missing signal and can sometimes worsen reception by amplifying interference or an already overloaded signal. The network or platform with exclusive rights
For a nationally televised or exclusively distributed game, use the network or streaming platform that owns that broadcast window. A Sunday Ticket subscription does not automatically include Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, or every special distribution arrangement. Usually, no. The word blackout has a historical NFL meaning that can cause confusion.

For many years, the NFL used a local blackout policy under which a home game could be withheld from local television if ticket-sales requirements were not met. The league suspended that long-standing policy for the 2015 season, explaining that the rule had been created when teams depended more heavily on ticket revenue. [CIT-009]
The Federal Communications Commission also eliminated its own sports-blackout rules in 2014, while recognizing that private contracts among leagues, broadcasters, networks, and distributors could still create blackout restrictions. [CIT-010]
As a result, a current Sunday Ticket message should not automatically be interpreted as “the stadium did not sell enough tickets.” The more relevant questions are:
- Is the game local to your current viewing area?
- Which network or platform has the game’s rights?
- Is the game within Sunday Ticket’s Sunday-afternoon regular-season scope?
- Is YouTube identifying your location correctly?
- Does a league, network, or regional agreement restrict the broadcast?
What Sunday Ticket does not guarantee
- Every NFL game: Sunday Ticket is not an all-games, all-windows package.
- Local channels: A standalone Sunday Ticket subscription does not supply local CBS, FOX, NBC, or ABC stations.
- Every Sunday game: Some games are nationally televised, exclusively streamed, preseason, postseason, or otherwise outside the package.
- Availability while traveling: The lineup can change with your current viewing area.
- A workaround through a VPN: Using a VPN or false location is not the documented solution for a location error and may conflict with YouTube’s service terms. Use YouTube’s location-verification process instead. [CIT-006] [CIT-007]
A quick diagnosis
If the game is on your local CBS or FOX affiliate: watch through YouTube TV, another authorized provider, or an antenna.
If it is Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, or another exclusive broadcast: use the applicable national network or streaming platform.
If it is an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon regular-season game but does not appear: check your account, current playback area, location permissions, and verification status.

If YouTube shows a clear regional blackout message after your location is verified: treat it as a rights restriction and check the relevant broadcaster or contact YouTube support. Do not assume the issue is a non-sellout or that buying Sunday Ticket again will solve it.

YouTube uses your current viewing area to determine availability. Traveling into a team’s local broadcast territory can make that team’s game unavailable through Sunday Ticket. If the result seems wrong, check location permissions and complete YouTube’s playback-area verification.
Can an antenna get a game that is blacked out on Sunday Ticket?
