There are 20 Great Rings of Power in Tolkien’s legendarium: one for Sauron, three for the Elves, seven for the Dwarves and nine for Men. But the famous total is often misunderstood. Sauron did not forge all 20, the Three Elven Rings were not directly touched by him, and most of the individual Rings have no canonical names.
There are 20 Great Rings of Power in Tolkien’s legendarium: one Ring for Sauron, three for the Elves, seven for the Dwarves and nine for Men. That total does not include the unnamed lesser rings made by the Elves of Eregion as experiments in ring-craft.
Only a few of the 20 have individual names. Tolkien identifies the One Ring, the three Elven Rings and the Ring of Thrór among the Seven. The other six Dwarf-rings and all nine Rings of Men remain unnamed in the canonical books. Many lists online give them names, but those names come from adaptations and games—particularly The Lord of the Rings Online—rather than Tolkien’s published writings.
The Rings were not all forged by Sauron. The Elven smiths of Eregion made the other 19. Sauron, disguised as the fair teacher Annatar, helped develop the craft behind the Rings that became the Seven and the Nine. Celebrimbor forged the Three alone, after Sauron had left Eregion, while Sauron alone made the One Ring in Mount Doom.

How the Rings of Power were created
The story begins in the Second Age, when the Elven smiths known as the Gwaith-i-Mírdain established their workshop in Eregion. Around Second Age 1200, Sauron arrived in a fair form under the name Annatar, “Lord of Gifts.” He offered knowledge that allowed the Elves to develop ring-craft of extraordinary power.
The Elves first produced lesser rings—experimental works that are not part of the famous total of 20. They then made the 16 Great Rings that eventually became the Seven and the Nine. In Tolkien’s chronology, those 16 were completed before the Three, despite the familiar verse listing “Three,” then “Seven,” then “Nine,” then “One.”
Celebrimbor subsequently made the Three Elven Rings without Sauron’s direct involvement. They were completed around S.A. 1590. Sauron forged the One Ring in Orodruin approximately ten years later, around S.A. 1600. The One was designed to control the other Rings and their users.
This distinction matters:
- Sauron forged only the One Ring.
- The Elves forged the other 19.
- Sauron assisted with the ring-lore behind the Seven and the Nine.
- Celebrimbor forged the Three alone.
- The Three were not directly tainted by Sauron because he did not touch or participate in their making, but they were still connected to the One through the underlying craft.
When Sauron put on the One, the Elves recognized his intention and removed their Rings. He then invaded Eregion, captured the Rings that became the Seven and the Nine, and later distributed them to Dwarf-lords and mortal Men.
1. The One Ring
Other names: the Ruling Ring, the Great Ring, Isildur’s Bane
Creator: Sauron
Forged: approximately S.A. 1600
Place: Orodruin, Mount Doom
Material: gold
Inscription: the Black Speech verse beginning “Ash nazg durbatulûk…”
The One Ring was the center of Sauron’s design. He placed a large portion of his own power and will into it, making it possible for him to dominate the other Rings and their bearers. It did not simply add another weapon to Sauron’s arsenal: the Ring embodied a substantial part of the power by which he sought to rule Middle-earth.
Known bearers and owners
- Sauron forged and wore the Ring during the Second Age.
- Isildur cut it from Sauron’s hand after Sauron’s defeat and the deaths of Gil-galad and Elendil.
- Déagol found it in the Anduin.
- Sméagol, later Gollum, killed Déagol and took it.
- Bilbo Baggins found it beneath the Misty Mountains in T.A. 2941.
- Frodo Baggins inherited it from Bilbo.
- Samwise Gamgee carried it briefly after Shelob attacked Frodo.
- Frodo recovered it and carried it to Mount Doom.
- Gollum seized it from Frodo at the Cracks of Doom.
The Ring was destroyed on 25 March T.A. 3019. Frodo brought it to the brink of the fire but did not voluntarily destroy it; at the Cracks of Doom he claimed it for himself. Gollum then bit off Frodo’s finger, took the Ring and fell into the fire while holding it. Thus, Gollum—not Frodo—performed the immediate physical act that destroyed the Ring.
With the One Ring gone, Sauron lost the power that sustained his domination. The other Rings did not necessarily vanish, but their active powers failed or became unusable.

The Three were the last of the Great Rings to be completed. Unlike the One, they were not designed primarily for domination. Their powers were associated with preservation: delaying the effects of time, resisting decay and maintaining beauty in a world moving toward decline.
They did not make their bearers invisible. The Three were also not completely independent of the One. Although Sauron never touched them and did not help forge them, they were made with ring-lore that Celebrimbor had learned through Annatar. When the One Ring was destroyed, the Three lost their power as well.
2. Narya, the Ring of Fire
Other names: the Red Ring, the Ring of Fire
Creator: Celebrimbor
Appearance: a ring set with a red stone or ruby
Known bearers: Celebrimbor, Círdan and Gandalf
Rank #2
Narya was associated with fire, courage and the ability to inspire others. Its best-known Third Age bearer was Gandalf, who received it from Círdan at the Grey Havens when the Wizards arrived in Middle-earth.

The published versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion indicate that Círdan received Narya among the Three and later gave it to Gandalf. A version in Unfinished Tales says that Celebrimbor sent Narya and Vilya to Gil-galad, after which Narya passed to Círdan. Both accounts derive from Tolkien’s writings, so neither should be silently treated as the only possible version.
Gandalf carried Narya into the West after the War of the Ring. Its power faded with the destruction of the One Ring.
3. Nenya, the Ring of Water
Other names: the Ring of Adamant, the White Ring, the Ring of Water
Creator: Celebrimbor
Appearance: mithril set with a white stone of adamant
Known bearers: Celebrimbor and Galadriel
Celebrimbor gave Nenya to Galadriel after Sauron’s treachery became known. She used it to preserve and protect Lothlórien, helping the realm resist the wear of time and remain beautiful in a changing Middle-earth.

Nenya was normally invisible to ordinary observers. Frodo could see it because he was carrying the One Ring; Samwise described the sight as a star shining through Galadriel’s fingers. This is one of the clearest demonstrations that the Rings of Power were not simply ordinary jewelry with visible gemstones and uniform effects.
After the One Ring was destroyed, Nenya lost its power. Galadriel carried it aboard the ship that departed from the Grey Havens. Lothlórien subsequently faded and was eventually abandoned.
4. Vilya, the Ring of Air
Other names: the Ring of Sapphire, the Blue Ring, the Ring of Air
Creator: Celebrimbor
Appearance: gold set with a large blue sapphire
Known bearers: Celebrimbor, Gil-galad and Elrond
Vilya was regarded as the mightiest of the Three. It was associated first with Gil-galad, who later gave it to Elrond. Elrond used its power in the preservation and protection of Rivendell.

Elrond did not openly use Vilya while Sauron possessed the One Ring. Its effects were linked to preservation, resistance to decay and the maintenance of Rivendell’s beauty rather than to battlefield domination or invisibility.
Vilya lost its power when the One Ring was destroyed. Elrond took it with him when he sailed into the West at the end of the Third Age.

The Seven Dwarf-rings
The Seven were made by the Elven smiths with Sauron’s assistance or instruction and were later given to seven Dwarf-lords. Tolkien does not identify six of them individually, nor does he provide a complete owner-by-owner history for the group.
The Rings did not turn Dwarves into wraiths. Dwarves were unusually resistant to Sauron’s attempt to dominate their minds. Instead, the Rings intensified their existing desire for wealth and dominion. They helped their bearers accumulate great hoards, but those hoards also attracted dragons and created new dangers.
5–10. The six unnamed Dwarf-rings
Six of the Seven have no individual canonical names. Their original owners are likewise unidentified beyond their association with the kings or lords of the Seven Houses of the Dwarves.
Four of the Seven were consumed and destroyed by dragons. Two were recovered by Sauron. Tolkien does not specify which individual Rings suffered which fate, and the ultimate physical fate of any surviving Ring is not explicitly recorded after the One Ring’s destruction.
Names such as Taurya, Sindya, Tínya, Tulcya, Úrya, Vanya and Angya are sometimes presented as the names of the Seven. They are not Tolkien’s canonical names; they come from The Lord of the Rings Online.
11. The Ring of Thrór, or Ring of Durin
Other name: the Ring of Durin
Creator: Celebrimbor
Original known bearer: Durin III
Later bearers: the Kings of Durin’s Folk, Thrór, Thráin II and Sauron
Appearance: gold set with a gem
The Ring of Thrór is the only one of the Seven individually identified in Tolkien’s published lore. Dwarven tradition held that Celebrimbor gave it directly to Durin III, king of Khazad-dûm. That account sits uneasily beside the version in which Celebrimbor surrendered the Seven to Sauron after being tortured, but both elements belong to Tolkien’s surviving textual tradition.
The Ring stayed within the line of Durin. Thrór eventually gave it to his son, Thráin II. After Thráin attempted to reclaim Erebor, Sauron captured him and took the Ring in the dungeons of Dol Guldur in T.A. 2845.
The Ring of Thrór was the last of the Seven to be recovered by Sauron. Its final fate is unknown. Gandalf believed it was probably destroyed in the fall of Barad-dûr, but that is an in-world conclusion rather than an event Tolkien directly narrates.
The Nine Rings of Men
The Nine were made by the Elven smiths under Sauron’s guidance. During the destruction of Eregion, Sauron captured them and later distributed them to nine mortal Men who desired power, wealth or elevated status.

Over time, however, the Men faded from the physical world and became wraiths permanently enslaved to Sauron. They became the Nazgûl, also called the Ringwraiths or the Nine.
12–20. The nine unnamed Rings of Men
Tolkien does not give the nine Rings individual names or identify all nine original bearers. The surviving information is limited but significant:
- Three recipients were great lords of Númenórean descent.
- At least one recipient was an Easterling or lord from the East.
- The remaining Men are not individually identified in the canonical books.
- Only two Nazgûl are identified with confidence: the Witch-king of Angmar, their leader, and Khamûl, an Easterling and the second most clearly identified Nazgûl.
The other six Nazgûl are unnamed in Tolkien’s books. Names such as Sâkhla, Adâsh, Orôm, Jûru, Mêbat, Khânto, Sapthân, Nitîr and Ûri come from The Lord of the Rings Online, not Tolkien’s canonical texts.
Who physically possessed the Nine during the War of the Ring?
The answer is uncertain because Tolkien’s texts point in two directions. One passage suggests that the Nazgûl kept their Rings, while another says that Sauron held the Nine. The most responsible summary is that the Nazgûl remained enslaved through the Nine, but Tolkien does not settle whether they physically wore or possessed them throughout the War of the Ring.
The Nine’s ultimate physical fate is also not explicitly narrated. They ceased to have practical power after the destruction of the One Ring, but Tolkien does not provide a definitive account of all nine being destroyed.
What happened to all 20 Rings?
| Ring or group | What happened |
|---|---|
| The One Ring | Gollum fell into Mount Doom while holding it on 25 March T.A. 3019, destroying the Ring and crippling Sauron. |
| Narya | Its power faded after the One Ring’s destruction; Gandalf carried it West. |
| Nenya | Its power faded; Galadriel carried it West, and Lothlórien later faded. |
| Vilya | Its power faded; Elrond carried it West. |
| Four Dwarf-rings | Destroyed by dragons. |
| Two Dwarf-rings | Recovered by Sauron; later physical fate not recorded. |
| Ring of Thrór | Recovered by Sauron from Thráin II; probably destroyed in the fall of Barad-dûr, according to Gandalf’s belief, but not confirmed by narration. |
| Nine Rings of Men | Held or reclaimed by Sauron by the end of the Third Age; their physical fate is not definitively stated. |
Important corrections to common Rings of Power claims
Did Sauron forge all 20 Rings?
No. Sauron forged only the One Ring. The Elven smiths forged the other 19, although Sauron helped teach the craft used for the Rings that became the Seven and the Nine.
Were the Rings originally made separately for Elves, Dwarves and Men?
Not exactly. The Elves made the Rings in Eregion. The Rings later known as the Seven and the Nine were seized by Sauron and distributed to Dwarves and Men. They were not necessarily manufactured from the beginning as three separate racial sets.
Did Sauron help forge the Three?
Not in Tolkien’s published account. Celebrimbor forged Narya, Nenya and Vilya without Sauron’s direct participation, after Sauron had left Eregion. However, Celebrimbor’s knowledge of ring-craft was partly derived from Sauron’s instruction, which is why the Three remained subject to the One.
Were the Three completely independent of the One?
No. They were free from Sauron’s direct touch, but not from the structure of power he had created. When the One Ring was destroyed, the Three’s preserving powers failed.
Did the Rings make Dwarves into Ringwraiths?
No. Dwarves resisted Sauron’s domination and did not fade into wraiths. The Seven instead amplified their hunger for treasure and power.
Did Frodo destroy the One Ring?
Frodo carried it to Mount Doom but claimed it at the Cracks of Doom. Gollum took it from him and fell into the fire, so the Ring was destroyed through Gollum’s final action.
How the television series differs from Tolkien’s account
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an adaptation that substantially rearranges Tolkien’s Second Age chronology and changes the creation story. In the series, the forging of the Three is connected to the Halbrand/Sauron storyline, mithril and Galadriel’s dagger.

In Tolkien’s account, by contrast, Celebrimbor forged the Three alone after Sauron’s departure from Eregion. The show’s chronology and character identities should therefore not be used as a guide to the book-lore timeline. The distinction is especially important when discussing who created the Rings and whether Sauron directly participated in making the Three.
The definitive answer: how many Rings are actually named?
Of the 20 Great Rings, Tolkien gives individual canonical names to:
- The One Ring
- Narya
- Nenya
- Vilya
- The Ring of Thrór, also called the Ring of Durin
The remaining six Dwarf-rings and nine Rings of Men are known only as members of their respective groups. The names commonly attached to them online should be labeled as game or adaptation material, not presented as Tolkien’s definitive names.
In short: the One Ring was the instrument of Sauron’s domination; the Three preserved Elven realms; the Seven magnified Dwarven greed without enslaving them as wraiths; and the Nine transformed mortal Men into the Nazgûl. The One was destroyed, the Three became powerless and passed into the West, while the final fate of most of the Seven and all of the Nine remains unrecorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Rings of Power are there?
Tolkien’s definitive total is 20 Great Rings: one Ring for Sauron, three Elven Rings, seven Dwarf-rings and nine Rings of Men. The unnamed lesser rings made by the Elves of Eregion are not included.
Did Sauron forge all 20 Rings?
No. Sauron forged only the One Ring in Mount Doom. The Elven smiths of Eregion forged the other 19, while Celebrimbor forged the Three without Sauron’s direct participation.
What are the names of all 20 Rings of Power?
Only five Great Rings have individual canonical names: the One Ring, Narya, Nenya, Vilya and the Ring of Thrór. Tolkien did not name the other six Dwarf-rings or the nine Rings of Men.
Who destroyed the One Ring?
The One Ring was destroyed in Mount Doom on 25 March T.A. 3019 when Gollum fell into the fire while holding it. Frodo carried it to Mount Doom but did not voluntarily destroy it.
What happened to the three Elven Rings?
The Three Elven Rings lost their power after the One Ring was destroyed. Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond carried Narya, Nenya and Vilya respectively into the West.
The Bottom Line
There are 20 Great Rings of Power, but only five are individually named in Tolkien’s canonical lore: the One Ring, Narya, Nenya, Vilya and the Ring of Thrór. Sauron forged only the One; the Elves made the other 19. The One was destroyed, the Three lost their power and sailed West, and the final fate of most of the Seven and all of the Nine was never definitively recorded.
