Harrison Butker’s May 11, 2024 commencement address at Benedictine College became controversial because it combined a Catholic exhortation with prescriptive claims about women, criticism of LGBTQ-related issues and gender ideology, opposition to abortion, and an attack on President Joe Biden’s presentation of himself as a Catholic.
The speech was not simply about homemaking, nor was it only a private religious reflection. Butker used a prominent college ceremony to make a broad argument about faith, gender, family, politics, and the direction of American culture.

Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs’ placekicker, delivered the address in Atchison, Kansas. Benedictine College published the complete recording, which provides the primary source for understanding what he said. He received a standing ovation at the ceremony, but the response quickly divided audiences far beyond the campus.

What Harrison Butker said about women, careers, marriage, and motherhood
The most widely discussed section began as a congratulation to the women graduating from Benedictine College. Butker then said he believed many of them were more excited about marriage and the children they might have than about their careers.
That formulation became the speech’s central flashpoint. The graduates were being honored for completing college, yet Butker appeared to place their anticipated roles as wives and mothers above—or at least ahead of—their professional accomplishments. He also presented homemaking and motherhood as central female vocations.
There is an important distinction between two ideas:
- A personal choice: Some women may reasonably decide that marriage, parenting, or homemaking will be their main priorities.
- A general prescription: Women as a group are primarily fulfilled by those roles, or should regard them as more important than education and professional achievement.
Butker’s rhetoric moved toward the second idea. That is why critics said he reduced women’s educational achievements to preparation for domestic life. The objection was not simply that he praised motherhood; it was that he appeared to define women’s highest or most important purpose through marriage, children, and homemaking.
The response from the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica made that criticism especially significant. The sisters, whose community was a founding sponsor associated with Benedictine College, rejected the suggestion that homemaking should be treated as the highest calling for every woman. They emphasized women’s contributions through leadership, scholarship, careers, marriage, motherhood, and service.
That disagreement also shows why it would be inaccurate to describe Butker’s comments as the uncontested position of Catholic institutions. Butker was expressing and defending his own interpretation of Catholic teaching. The later statement from the sisters demonstrated that Catholic and Benedictine figures disagreed about both the substance of his gender claims and the way Catholic identity should be presented publicly.
The speech was broader than its homemaking passage
Although the comments about women generated the most attention, they were part of a larger culture-war argument. Butker told graduates that they should resist what he considered modern cultural pressures hostile to Catholic belief and morality.

Gender ideology and Pride
Butker warned against what he called “dangerous gender ideologies.” He also criticized Pride in explicitly religious terms, presenting contemporary debates over gender and LGBTQ identity as evidence of a culture that, in his view, had moved away from Catholic moral teaching.

Critics argued that the language stigmatized LGBTQ people and conflicted with public commitments to inclusion. Those are competing interpretations of the speech’s impact, but the controversy clearly extended beyond a debate over whether women should become homemakers.
The National Football League responded by distinguishing Butker’s personal views from the league’s institutional position. The NFL reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion and did not present his remarks as an official league statement.
Abortion and Joe Biden
The address also opposed abortion and criticized President Joe Biden’s Catholic identity and abortion-related policies. That portion made the speech overtly political rather than solely devotional or autobiographical.
By challenging a sitting president who identifies as Catholic, Butker placed the speech within a live partisan dispute about whether Catholic politicians can support abortion-related policies that conflict with the church’s official opposition to abortion. His intervention was therefore not just advice to graduates; it was also a public argument about Catholic political identity.

These remarks are one reason the speech cannot accurately be summarized as a defense of traditional family life alone. Butker connected family roles to a much wider critique of gender politics, LGBTQ-related cultural debates, abortion, and Democratic leadership.
Why the commencement setting mattered
Commencement addresses usually celebrate graduates and offer general advice about the next stage of life. Butker instead used the platform to deliver a forceful statement about religious identity, cultural conflict, gender roles, abortion, and LGBTQ-related issues.

That mismatch helped drive the backlash. A commencement audience includes graduates with different goals and beliefs, including women who may intend to pursue careers, remain single, become parents, build a household, or combine several of those paths. A speaker who tells graduates what fulfillment should look like is making a prescriptive claim, not merely describing one possible life.
The setting also gave Butker’s words an institutional dimension. He was invited to speak by a Catholic college at a formal ceremony, and he was not addressing only a private group of like-minded listeners. At the same time, the standing ovation showed that his message resonated with at least a substantial part of the audience present. It does not establish that every graduate agreed with him, and it does not resolve the dispute over whether the address represented the college as a whole.

Why supporters defended Harrison Butker
Supporters viewed the speech differently. For them, Butker was speaking to a Catholic audience about the importance of taking Catholic belief seriously. They regarded his criticism of gender ideology, Pride, abortion, and Biden as a legitimate exercise of religious conviction and free expression.
Some supporters also argued that praising motherhood and homemaking should not automatically be treated as an attack on women with other ambitions. On this reading, Butker was affirming family life and challenging the assumption that professional success is the only meaningful measure of achievement.
That defense has a real basis in the content of the speech, but it does not eliminate the central criticism. The issue was not merely whether motherhood has value. The issue was whether Butker generalized about what women want and implied that domestic roles should rank above their academic or professional accomplishments.
Why critics objected
Critics objected on several overlapping grounds:
- They viewed the gender claims as reductive. Butker addressed women graduates who had just completed college and suggested that marriage and children mattered more to many of them than their careers. Critics said this diminished the achievement being celebrated.
- They regarded the message as prescriptive. Saying that some women choose homemaking is different from presenting homemaking as the highest calling for women generally.
- They objected to the LGBTQ-related language. His criticism of gender ideology and Pride was understood by LGBTQ advocates and other critics as stigmatizing rather than merely theological.
- They saw the speech as politically divisive. His remarks about abortion and Biden moved beyond spiritual encouragement into current partisan conflict.
- They questioned the fit with the institution. The Mount St. Scholastica sisters said the tone fostered division and did not reflect the Catholic, Benedictine liberal-arts college their founders envisioned.
These criticisms should be attributed rather than presented as uncontested descriptions. “Sexist,” “anti-LGBTQ,” and “divisive” are characterizations made by critics of the speech; they are not neutral substitutes for describing what Butker actually said.
What the NFL and Kansas City Chiefs said
The NFL said Butker spoke in his personal capacity. The league separated his views from its own institutional position and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion.

That response represents institutional distancing, not a reported suspension, firing, or formal league punishment. The available reporting does not support saying that the NFL removed Butker from the Chiefs or disciplined him because of the address.
Patrick Mahomes took a similar middle position. He said Butker was entitled to express his beliefs but acknowledged that he did not agree with all of them. That is not an endorsement of the speech. It reflects an attempt to respect an individual player’s right to speak while avoiding the suggestion that Butker’s comments represented the Chiefs or all of his teammates.
How Butker responded to the backlash
Butker later said he had been intentional about the speech and stood behind what he had said. He also argued that some of his remarks had been misinterpreted.
That was a defense and clarification, not a retraction. He did not withdraw the central argument that graduates should resist cultural trends he considered incompatible with Catholic teaching, nor did he abandon his claims about women, family, gender ideology, Pride, abortion, and Biden.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the speech does—and does not—represent
The most accurate reading treats the address as three overlapping messages:
- A Catholic exhortation: Butker urged graduates to take Catholic belief seriously and resist cultural pressures he believed were hostile to church teaching.
- A prescription about gender and family: He argued that women’s fulfillment is closely tied to marriage, motherhood, and homemaking, and suggested that many women value those roles more than careers.
- A political and culture-war intervention: He criticized gender ideology, Pride, abortion, and Biden’s presentation of himself as a Catholic.
It would be misleading to say the address represented the Catholic Church as a whole. It represented Butker’s interpretation and advocacy. The disagreement from the Mount St. Scholastica sisters is evidence that Catholic-affiliated people and institutions did not all share his framing.
It would also be misleading to reduce the address to one sentence about homemakers. The women’s passage was the most controversial because it directly addressed the graduates and appeared to generalize about their priorities. But the speech became a national culture-war flashpoint because that passage was joined to arguments about LGBTQ issues, abortion, gender politics, and a sitting president’s Catholic identity.
