Dame Maggie Smith, the celebrated British actor known to worldwide audiences as Professor Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter and Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, died peacefully in a London hospital on September 27, 2024. She was 89.
Dame Maggie Smith, the acclaimed British stage and screen actor known to millions as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey, died peacefully in a London hospital on September 27, 2024. She was 89.
Her sons, actors Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, announced her death in a statement. They said Smith was with friends and family at the end of her life, and that she left five grandchildren. The family also thanked the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care. No cause of death was publicly disclosed in the announcement.
A career that reached far beyond Harry Potter and Downton Abbey
For younger audiences, Smith’s most recognizable performances came late in a professional career that lasted more than six decades. She brought Professor McGonagall a mixture of discipline, intelligence, dry humor, and hidden warmth throughout the Harry Potter film series. As Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, she delivered elaborate put-downs and perfectly timed reactions with such authority that the Dowager Countess became one of television’s defining comic characters.

Those roles expanded Smith’s audience; they did not define the full measure of her work. Her career began on stage in 1952 and ultimately included more than 50 film appearances, along with major work in theater and television. She was a leading British performer long before she became a fixture of global franchise and prestige television audiences.

Two Academy Awards and a wide-ranging film career
Smith won two Academy Awards. She received the Oscar for Best Actress for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, the 1969 performance that also brought her a BAFTA, and later won Best Supporting Actress for California Suite.

She appeared in the literary period drama A Room with a View, the psychologically intense The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne, and Robert Altman’s ensemble mystery Gosford Park. She also brought her precision and comic instincts to popular films including Hook, Sister Act, Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Whether playing formidable, eccentric, aristocratic, lonely, or sharply funny characters, Smith had an unusual ability to make control itself dramatic. A pause, raised eyebrow, or clipped line reading could reveal an entire social hierarchy or emotional history.
Her television legacy as Violet Crawley
Downton Abbey introduced Smith to an especially broad television audience. Violet Crawley’s observations were often comic, but the character was not merely a source of one-liners. Smith gave the Dowager Countess a sense of intelligence shaped by a changing world, allowing the performance to move between satire, stubbornness, affection, and vulnerability.
Smith won three Primetime Emmy Awards for acting connected to the series, including awards in 2011, 2012, and 2016. Her 2016 win was for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The honors reflected the performance’s popularity, but also its technical difficulty: Smith made highly stylized dialogue sound spontaneous while keeping Violet’s social authority intact.

Professor McGonagall and a new generation of viewers
In the Harry Potter films, Smith played Professor Minerva McGonagall, the stern but principled Hogwarts teacher. The role demanded a different register from Violet Crawley. McGonagall’s reserve conveyed moral seriousness and professional competence, while Smith’s understated humor kept the character from becoming severe or distant.
Her presence helped give the films a strong ensemble of veteran British performers. For viewers who encountered her through Harry Potter, the films became an entry point into a much older body of work in theater, cinema, and television.
A major British performer
Smith’s honors extended beyond her two Oscars and three acting Emmys. She received multiple BAFTA, Emmy, and Golden Globe honors across a career that also included stage work and distinguished screen performances. Exact award totals can vary depending on whether honorary and special awards are counted, but her standing among Britain’s leading actors was never in doubt.

Maggie Smith’s final popular roles made her familiar to audiences who might not otherwise have encountered her work. But her enduring legacy is broader: a six-decade career grounded in stage performance, classical technique, film acting, television, comedy, and dramatic precision. McGonagall and the Dowager Countess were unforgettable chapters in that story—not the whole story.
