Aegon is No. 1. Maegor, Daenerys, Aerys, and Baelon round out the top five in this subjective ranking of Targaryen names. The list judges the names themselves—not the characters’ morality, political importance, popularity, or achievements.
One accuracy note matters before the ranking: the published list prints rank 32 twice, omits rank 33, and lists Maegon twice. Those errors are preserved and identified below rather than silently corrected.
Short answer: in this deliberately subjective ranking, Aegon takes the top spot, followed by Maegor, Daenerys, Aerys, and Baelon. The list judges how the Targaryen names sound—not the characters’ morality, political influence, popularity, or importance to the story.
The names come from George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe, including Fire & Blood, the Targaryen history that provides the source material for House of the Dragon. Because many members of the dynasty share names, a numeral, epithet, or family description is essential whenever the discussion shifts from a name to a specific person.

Why these names feel so distinctly Targaryen
Targaryen naming is built from recurring sounds and family patterns. The names often combine soft vowels with sharp consonants: Rhaegar, Vaegon, Maekar, and Jaehaerys all sound related without being interchangeable. The repeated prefixes and endings create a recognizable dynastic style, much as royal naming traditions do in real-world history.
Common forms include Aegon, Aelor, Aelora, Aelyx, Aemon, Aemond, Aenys, Aerea, Aerion, Aerys, Baela, Baelon, Baelor, Daella, Daemion, Daemon, Daena, Daenerys, Daenora, Daenys, Daeron, Elaena, Gael, Gaemon, Helaena, Maegelle, Maegon, Maegor, Maekar, Naerys, Rhaegar, Rhaegel, Rhaella, Rhaelle, Rhaena, Rhaenyra, Rhaenys, Saera, Shaena, Shaera, Vaegon, Vaella, Valarr, Valerion, Visenya, Viserra, and Viserys.
The result is a naming system that is immediately recognizable but also unusually difficult to memorize. A single vowel can distinguish one person from another, while several generations may reuse the same celebrated names.

1. Aegon
Aegon is concise, forceful, and central to Targaryen history. It sounds like a king’s name without needing an elaborate ending, and its importance is reinforced by how often the dynasty returns to it. The name belongs to several characters, including Aegon the Conqueror, Aegon II, Aegon III, and Aegon V, so a numeral or epithet is necessary whenever precision matters.

2. Maegor
Maegor has a hard, threatening sound. The “ae” opening marks it as Valyrian, while the ending gives it weight and menace. It is memorable partly because it feels less ornamental than many of the dynasty’s names.
3. Daenerys
Daenerys is one of the most recognizable Targaryen names in the wider franchise. It is longer and more lyrical than Aegon or Maegor, but still carries the family’s distinctive vowel pattern. The name’s cultural visibility comes primarily from Daenerys Targaryen in A Song of Ice and Fire and its television adaptation; that popularity is separate from the name-ranking exercise itself.
4. Aerys
Aerys is compact, elegant, and slightly severe. Like several high-ranking Targaryen names, it is easy to say but visually distinctive. The best-known bearer is Aerys II, the Mad King, but the name should not be treated as a judgment on that character.
5. Baelon
Baelon has a strong rhythm and a warmer sound than many of the harsher entries. It feels ancient and princely without becoming difficult to pronounce, which helps explain its position near the top.

6–10: Rhaegar, Jaehaerys, Valerion, Shaera, and Daemon
Rhaegar is dramatic and instantly associated with the dynasty’s mythic side. Jaehaerys sounds ceremonious and unmistakably royal, even though its spelling demands attention. Valerion has an expansive, almost grandly imperial quality. Shaera is softer and more elegant, while Daemon is short, blunt, and memorable. Together, these names show the range of the Targaryen style: regal, lyrical, ancient, and occasionally menacing.
Names that are easy to confuse
The most common source of confusion is repetition, not an absence of imagination. The dynasty repeatedly honors its ancestors, and the same name can belong to people separated by centuries.
- Aegon: distinguish Aegon I, Aegon the Conqueror; Aegon II; Aegon III, sometimes called Aegon the Younger; and Aegon V, later known as Aegon the Unlikely.
- Aemon: use context or a title, such as Prince Aemon or Maester Aemon.
- Daeron: specify the ruler or prince, since more than one Targaryen carries the name.
- Daenerys: usually refers to the best-known princess in the main series, but the name also appears elsewhere in the family history.
- Daella, Rhaena, Rhaenys, and Viserys: these names recur across different generations and should not be treated as single-character labels.
For a clean reference, combine the name with a numeral, epithet, parentage, or historical period: “Aegon I,” “Rhaenyra Targaryen,” “Aemon the Dragonknight,” or “the Viserys who ruled before the Dance.” That small clarification prevents many family-tree errors.

What the ranking does—and does not—measure
This list is not a canon ranking. There is no official Targaryen authority declaring Aegon a better name than Maegor, or Daenerys more appealing than Rhaenyra. It is also not a ranking of the dynasty’s rulers. A character can have an excellent name and be a terrible person; a historically important character can have a less immediately appealing name.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That distinction matters especially with famous entries. Daemon, Maegor, and Aerys are sonically powerful names even when their bearers are controversial or destructive. Conversely, a lower-ranked name may belong to a character who is politically or emotionally significant. The list is about the sound, shape, and atmosphere of the names themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Want the history behind the names?
For readers who want the Targaryen history behind House of the Dragon, start with George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. It presents the history of House Targaryen from Aegon the Conqueror through the civil conflict that nearly destroys the dynasty. It is the most direct reading choice for understanding why so many of these names recur and how the family’s generations fit together. The book provides the historical material; it does not validate this subjective ranking.
For a broader guide to Westerosi dynasties, cultures, and historical background, The World of Ice & Fire is a better reference-style companion. Readers who want the main narrative rather than a historical chronicle can turn to the five-book A Song of Ice and Fire boxed set, but it is a wider fantasy series—not a dedicated Targaryen reference book.

Watch the Targaryen story
Readers who want to see the dynasty on screen can continue with House of the Dragon, the Targaryen-centered HBO series based on Fire & Blood. It is available through Max, subject to the service’s current catalog, plan, and territory availability.
Bottom line: “All 56 Targaryen Names, Ranked” works best as a playful guide to the dynasty’s sound and style. The published order runs from Aenys at the bottom to Aegon at the top, but the duplicated rank 32, missing rank 33, and repeated Maegon entry should remain visible whenever the original list is reproduced. For the deeper story, read Fire & Blood; for the screen version, watch House of the Dragon on Max.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an official ranking of the best Targaryen characters?
No. This is a subjective ranking based on how the names sound and feel. It does not rank Targaryen rulers, characters, morality, popularity, or importance in canon.
Why does the list have a duplicate rank and two Maegons?
The published list prints rank 32 twice, omits rank 33, and lists Maegon at both ranks 35 and 31. This article preserves those entries rather than inventing a correction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I read or watch after this list?
Fire & Blood is the most direct choice because it chronicles House Targaryen from Aegon the Conqueror through the civil conflict that nearly destroys the dynasty. House of the Dragon is the screen adaptation path, though it makes changes from the book.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: this is a subjective ranking of how Targaryen names sound, not a verdict on the characters who carried them. The published list places Aegon at No. 1 and Aenys at No. 56, while also containing a visible numbering anomaly: rank 32 appears twice, rank 33 is missing, and Maegon appears twice. Fire & Blood is the best next step for the dynasty’s history, with House of the Dragon on Max as the obvious screen follow-up.
