Yellowstone was filmed in Montana and Utah—not primarily in Yellowstone National Park. The recognizable Dutton Ranch exterior is Chief Joseph Ranch, a private working ranch near Darby, Montana. The production also used locations around the Bitterroot Valley, Missoula, Park City, Kamas, Oakley, Coalville, and Ogden.

Short answer: Yellowstone was filmed in both Montana and Utah—not primarily in Yellowstone National Park. The most recognizable location is Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, the private property used for the exterior of the fictional Dutton Ranch. Other Montana scenes were filmed around the Bitterroot Valley and Missoula, while Utah supplied substantial production locations, particularly during seasons 1–3, in and around Park City, Kamas, Oakley, Coalville, and Ogden.

That distinction matters if you are planning a fan trip. The Dutton Ranch is a private working ranch, Utah Film Studios is not an ordinary public attraction, and the real Yellowstone National Park is a separate destination with its own visitor, photography, filming, and drone rules.

At a glance: the main filming regions

Region What it represents What visitors should know
Darby and the Bitterroot Valley, Montana The Dutton Ranch exterior and surrounding Montana landscapes Chief Joseph Ranch is private and reservation-gated; the wider valley is the practical base for planning a visit.
Missoula, Montana Reported town and city scenes, including commercial and civic exteriors These are functioning businesses, medical facilities, offices, and public places—not guaranteed fan attractions.
Park City and northern Utah Studio work and outdoor or community locations, especially in earlier seasons Some locations are private, temporary, or associated with production facilities that do not offer public tours.
Ogden, Utah Historic urban scenery, including 25th Street Historic 25th Street is the clearest public-facing Utah stop, with shops, restaurants, and preserved buildings.
Yellowstone National Park A separate national park, not the show’s principal filming base Plan under National Park Service rules. Drones are prohibited, and some filming or photography activities require permits.

Chief Joseph Ranch: the real Dutton Ranch

Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, is the real property used for the exterior of the Dutton Ranch. It is a private working ranch in the Bitterroot Valley, not a theme park or a roadside attraction. The ranch’s own FAQ says Paramount selected the property after an unsolicited approach and confirms that the ranch remains private.

The most important access rule is simple: the ranch does not offer tours without a cabin reservation. A reservation does not turn the property into an unrestricted public attraction; guests still need to follow the ranch’s rules and respect its working operations.

Can you see the Dutton Ranch sign?

Fans may photograph the Dutton Ranch sign at the gate if they are courteous. Do not block the driveway, enter the property without authorization, interfere with residents, staff, cast, or crew, or treat the entrance as a place to linger in traffic. A photograph from a permitted public position is very different from walking onto the ranch.

If you are interested in the lodging option, research Chief Joseph Ranch cabin reservations directly through the ranch’s current official information before making plans. Availability, rules, and seasonal conditions can change. Do not assume that a third-party tour, map pin, or social-media post grants access.

Darby and the Bitterroot Valley

Darby is the most useful regional starting point for the ranch location. The Bitterroot Valley gives visitors a broader travel framework than a single-address search: it includes the communities, roads, scenery, lodging, and services needed for a trip to the area.

Visit Montana identifies Bitterroot River Ranch as approximately six miles south of Darby and Chief Joseph Ranch, which helps explain why the area is relevant to accommodation and itinerary planning. Distances and travel times should still be checked against current maps, weather, road conditions, and the exact property you intend to visit.

Do not publish or rely on unsupported claims about which rooms, outbuildings, or individual scenes were filmed at specific parts of the ranch. The exterior identity of Chief Joseph Ranch is well established; detailed episode-by-episode building assignments require separate verification.

Montana filming locations beyond the ranch

Yellowstone also used locations around Missoula. Current location reporting identifies sites including:

  • Ryman Street;
  • Ruby’s CafĂ©;
  • Community Medical Center;
  • the Missoula County Courthouse; and
  • the Garlington Building.

These should be treated as location-reporting leads, not guaranteed visitor attractions. A business may change its appearance or operating status; a hospital or medical center must continue serving patients; a courthouse and office building may restrict access; and an exterior used by a production does not mean the interior is open to fans.

Why Darby and Missoula should be separate stops

Darby and the Bitterroot Valley belong to one regional plan, while Missoula is a separate Montana cluster. Trying to present every Montana reference as a compact, single-day route can create unrealistic expectations. Build the itinerary around the place you actually want to visit, then confirm current access to each reported site.

Why Utah is part of the Yellowstone filming map

Utah was a substantial production base for the series, particularly in its earlier production period. Official Utah tourism and film-commission material identifies filming and production activity in and around Park City, Utah Film Studios, Kamas, Oakley, Coalville, and Ogden, with additional communities included in the wider production landscape.

Visit Park City reports that production used Utah Film Studios and surrounding communities including Coalville, Oakley, Kamas, Heber, Morgan, Francis, Springville, and Echo. The studio work included constructed interior spaces associated with the series, including Yellowstone Lodge interiors and other sets.

That does not mean every community has a permanent Yellowstone attraction, or that the public can enter every location. The accurate description is that the production filmed in and around these communities. Studios, country clubs, private ranches, residential properties, and temporary production sites may be closed, restricted, or substantially different after filming.

A practical Utah filming-locations route

1. Park City and Utah Film Studios

Park City is a useful base for understanding Utah’s role in the production. Utah Film Studios provided production infrastructure, while the surrounding region supplied landscapes and community locations.

Do not assume Utah Film Studios offers public tours simply because it is associated with the show. Check the facility’s current visitor policy and do not approach active production areas without explicit authorization.

2. Kamas Valley

Kamas and the surrounding valley are useful for a scenic road-trip component of the Utah itinerary. The area represents the outdoor-production side of Utah’s contribution: working communities, open landscapes, and mountain roads rather than a single fan exhibit.

Use ordinary travel precautions. Stay on public roads and designated property, obey parking restrictions, and avoid stopping where you obstruct residents, agricultural activity, or traffic.

3. Oakley and Coalville

Official Utah tourism material identifies Oakley and Coalville among the communities used in the seasons 1–3 filming landscape. They are best approached as small-town and scenic locations woven into a larger road trip, not as places where every visitor will find a marked filming plaque or an open set.

4. Ogden and historic 25th Street

Historic 25th Street in Ogden is one of the most practical public stops. Visit Utah identifies the street as a filming location and presents it as an active destination with restaurants, shops, and historic buildings. That makes it more suitable for independent visitors than a private ranch or studio, although individual businesses may have their own hours and policies.

Visit Utah describes the route from Salt Lake City or Park City to Ogden as approximately 115 miles and about two hours. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a guarantee: traffic, construction, weather, seasonal road conditions, and the route you choose can change the timing. Check current navigation and road information immediately before departure.

What can fans actually visit?

Location type Reasonable expectation Responsible approach
Private ranch Limited, reservation-based access—or no access Use official reservation information. Never enter without permission.
Studio or constructed set Production facility, usually not a public attraction Do not assume tours are available. Follow the facility’s current policy.
Restaurant or café Operating business that may have appeared on screen Visit as a customer, check hours, and do not disrupt staff or other diners.
Hospital, courthouse, or office Working civic or medical facility Do not enter for fan purposes or photograph people without permission.
Historic public street Walkable destination with businesses and traffic Use legal parking, observe pedestrian rules, and respect residents and businesses.
National park Public land with detailed federal regulations Follow National Park Service rules, including permit and drone requirements.

Yellowstone National Park is not the television show’s main set

The name creates an understandable mistake, but visiting the national park is a different trip. The National Park Service provides planning information on entrance passes, weather, safety, roads, visitor centers, and available services. Conditions can change quickly, particularly in winter and shoulder seasons, so consult current park guidance before setting out.

If your plans include filming, still photography, or sound recording inside the actual park, use National Park Service rules rather than general television-location advice. The NPS says that certain filming, still-photography, and sound-recording activities require permits. Drones are prohibited in Yellowstone National Park.

Planning checklist for a responsible set-jetting trip

  1. Classify the location first. Determine whether it is public, private, commercial, civic, medical, residential, or an active production property.
  2. Confirm access directly. A location appearing in an episode does not create a right to enter, park, photograph, or tour it.
  3. Reserve before traveling. Chief Joseph Ranch access is tied to authorized cabin reservations; do not arrive expecting an informal tour.
  4. Check current hours and closures. Businesses, roads, studios, lodging providers, and national-park facilities may operate seasonally or change policies.
  5. Build by region. Plan Darby and the Bitterroot Valley separately from Missoula, and treat Utah as its own road-trip network.
  6. Check roads and weather. Mountain weather, construction, traffic, and seasonal closures can make published route times inaccurate.
  7. Protect working places. Do not interfere with patients, residents, employees, traffic, ranch operations, cast, or crew.
  8. Follow park regulations. If you visit Yellowstone National Park, follow NPS rules and leave drones at home.

Rewatching the series before or after your trip

Location research is often more rewarding when you revisit the scenes first. Readers who want a physical copy can look for Yellowstone: The Complete Series DVD. Verify the current listing, seller, region, edition, and availability before buying; do not assume that a particular set includes filming-location extras unless its listing specifically says so.

For streaming viewers, the official Paramount platform has listed Yellowstone as a five-season series in the referenced market. Readers should confirm current regional availability and plan terms before subscribing. In particular, availability and pricing can differ by country and can change over time.

The Bottom Line

The best Yellowstone filming-location trip separates the show’s production map from the national park: visit the Darby and Bitterroot Valley area for the private Chief Joseph Ranch exterior, treat Missoula as a separate Montana cluster, explore Utah’s public-facing communities and historic 25th Street, and verify access before approaching any private or working location.
