Netflix’s The Perfect Couple is a six-episode limited series about a wealthy Nantucket family whose wedding weekend becomes a murder investigation. When maid of honor Merritt Monaco is found dead, every guest is a suspect—and the finale reveals a major change from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel.

Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the murder, the inheritance motive, the killer, and the major difference between Netflix’s series and Elin Hilderbrand’s novel.

The Perfect Couple is a six-episode Netflix limited series about a wealthy Nantucket family whose elaborate wedding weekend turns into a murder investigation. When Merritt Monaco, the maid of honor, is found dead near the Winbury property, every guest becomes a suspect—including the bride, Amelia Sacks, and members of the family she is about to marry.

The series is a glossy, deliberately heightened blend of coastal luxury, family melodrama, and closed-circle mystery. It is not a true-crime story; it is a scripted adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel. Netflix classifies it as a 2024 TV-MA drama and lists six episodes, although availability and regional ratings should be checked on the Netflix title page for your market. Check Netflix’s official title page.

What is The Perfect Couple about?

Amelia Sacks is preparing to marry Benji Winbury, the son of one of Nantucket’s most powerful families. The wedding is being staged at the Winburys’ grand coastal estate under the watchful eye of Benji’s mother, Greer Garrison Winbury—a celebrated mystery novelist who is determined to control both the ceremony and the family’s public image.

That plan collapses when Amelia’s best friend and maid of honor, Merritt Monaco, is found dead in the waters near the Winbury property. Police chief Dan Carter and detective Nikki Henry begin questioning the wedding party, while the Winburys try to contain the scandal. The case quickly exposes affairs, debts, pregnancy, inheritance disputes, old resentments, and secrets that make the family’s polished image impossible to maintain.

The central mystery is therefore also a family power struggle: who killed Merritt, what did Merritt know, and who stood to gain from her death?

Who is in the cast?

Actor Character Role in the mystery

Liev Schreiber Tag Winbury Greer’s husband and the patriarch whose fortune shapes the family’s future.
Eve Hewson Amelia Sacks The bride-to-be and an outsider entering the Winbury family.
Billy Howle Benji Winbury Greer and Tag’s son and Amelia’s fiancé.
Dakota Fanning Abby Stokes Winbury Thomas’s pregnant wife, whose financial fears become crucial to the ending.
Jack Reynor Thomas Winbury One of the Winbury sons, struggling with serious debt.
Sam Nivola Will Winbury The youngest Winbury son; his eighteenth birthday matters to the inheritance timetable.
Meghann Fahy Merritt Monaco Amelia’s maid of honor, whose death begins the investigation.

Michael Beach Dan Carter The police chief investigating Merritt’s death.
Donna Lynne Champlin Nikki Henry The detective assigned to the case.
Isabelle Adjani Isabel Nallet A family friend connected to the Winbury social circle.

Netflix’s official cast guide confirms the principal character assignments. The production’s executive producers include Susanne Bier, Jenna Lamia, Elin Hilderbrand, Shawn Levy, Josh Barry, Gail Berman, Hend Baghdady, Nicole Kidman, and Per Saari.

Who directed and created the series?

Susanne Bier directed the series and also served as an executive producer. Jenna Lamia is the showrunner and an executive producer, while Elin Hilderbrand is credited as the author and an executive producer. Netflix’s Media Center identifies the program as a six-episode drama.

The production used Nantucket for selected location work, including scenes connected with the bookshop and the bar where Greer meets police chief Dan Carter. The setting is more than decoration: the island’s wealth, social hierarchy, and insular community help create the closed-circle atmosphere.

Episode guide

The series has six episodes. The wedding weekend and investigation unfold across the same compressed period, while each episode peels back another layer of the Winbury family’s image.

  1. “Someone Could Get Hurt”: Merritt’s death disrupts the wedding weekend, and the Winburys begin trying to manage the crisis.
  2. “She Would Never Do That”: Police search Summerland for clues as Greer works to control the public narrative and a guest considers leaving the island.
  3. “The Perfect Family”: Greer attempts to preserve appearances during a magazine interview, Abby’s secret begins to surface, and Amelia confronts the family at dinner.
  4. Episode four: Detective Henry’s questions become more difficult, Greer receives a mysterious call, and conflict within the Winbury household intensifies.
  5. “Never Gonna Give You Up”: Tag’s movements receive closer scrutiny, Amelia conducts her own questioning, and Greer’s attempted book launch becomes another public-relations problem.
  6. “That Feels Better”: The investigation pushes the family toward collapse, long-buried secrets come out, and the truth about Merritt’s death is revealed.

Episode-title note: Netflix’s public episode materials have not displayed every metadata field consistently. The supplied official listing repeats “Someone Could Get Hurt” for episodes one and four, so viewers should verify the episode-four title in the Netflix interface before treating that title as definitive.

Why does the opening dance matter?

Each episode opens with the cast performing a choreographed dance to Meghan Trainor’s “Criminals.” The sequence is intentionally out of step with the murder plot: the actors look celebratory, glamorous, and almost absurdly carefree while the story concerns death and deception.

Netflix describes the opening as a kind of fever dream. It establishes the show’s governing contrast between expensive escapism and dark domestic suspense. The dance also suggests that the characters are performing roles—perfect family, perfect wedding, perfect couple—long before the investigation proves how unstable those identities are.

The Perfect Couple ending explained: who killed Merritt?

Abby Stokes Winbury killed Merritt. Dakota Fanning’s character initially appears to be a sympathetic, pregnant wife caught in the family’s chaos. The finale reveals that Abby deliberately killed Merritt because Merritt’s pregnancy threatened the Winbury inheritance.

What was Abby’s motive?

Merritt was pregnant with Tag Winbury’s child. The Winbury sons were positioned to inherit Tag’s fortune after the youngest son, Will, turned eighteen. Merritt’s baby would become another heir, dividing the money among four children instead of three. The additional child would also delay distribution of the inheritance for eighteen years.

That prospect was especially frightening for Abby because she and Thomas were under severe financial pressure. Thomas’s debts made the family fortune feel less like an abstract legacy and more like their only route to security. Abby therefore saw Merritt’s pregnancy as a direct threat to her family’s future.

Why was Abby difficult to identify as the killer?

Abby hides in plain sight. She comforts Amelia, participates in the wedding-family drama, and seems less dominant than Greer or less visibly compromised than Thomas. That apparent vulnerability helps conceal how closely she is tracking the consequences of Merritt’s pregnancy.

The reveal is also a reversal of the role viewers may assign her. Abby is not simply a victim of the Winbury family’s wealth and neglect; she ultimately chooses violence to protect her place within that system. Netflix’s finale discussion presents her as a hidden or secret villain rather than an obvious suspect.

How does the series differ from the book?

The biggest difference is the nature of Merritt’s death.

Netflix series Elin Hilderbrand’s novel
Merritt’s death Intentional murder. Accidental drowning while Merritt searches the water for her ring.
Killer Abby Stokes Winbury. There is no equivalent intentional killer behind the death.
Mystery structure A conventional murder investigation with a concealed perpetrator and financial motive. A death that emerges from accident and circumstance rather than a planned killing.

The adaptation keeps the novel’s essential ingredients—Nantucket, an affluent family, a wedding, Merritt’s death, and an investigation—but changes the emotional and mechanical center of the story. Showrunner Jenna Lamia and Bier explained that television needed a visible murderer and a motive, rather than an internal explanation built around an accident. Read Netflix’s ending explainer for the adaptation rationale.

If you want to compare the two versions, the novel behind the Netflix series, The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand, is the natural place to start. Read it after the show if you want the adaptation’s central mystery to remain a surprise; read it before the series if you are interested in seeing how the screen version transforms the ending.

What does the series say about wealth and family image?

The Winburys’ money does not merely give the characters luxurious surroundings. It determines who can delay consequences, who gets protected, and who is expected to disappear quietly. Greer’s instinct is to manage the story as if it were one of her novels or publicity campaigns. The police investigation threatens not only the family’s freedom but also its carefully curated identity.

That is why the wedding setting works so effectively. Weddings promise unity and public perfection, while the Winbury household is organized around secrets, unequal power, and financial dependence. Amelia’s outsider status lets the audience see the family’s rituals as performances. Merritt’s death makes the performance unsustainable.

The show’s “eat-the-rich” appeal comes from this collision: the family has seemingly limitless resources, yet its members remain trapped by inheritance rules, status anxiety, debt, infidelity, and the fear of losing access to wealth. The coastal beauty and designer polish make the underlying desperation more—not less—uncomfortable.

Is The Perfect Couple worth watching?

It is a good fit for viewers who want a fast, visually extravagant ensemble mystery with a self-contained ending. The six-episode format keeps the central investigation moving, while the large cast creates a steady supply of suspects and competing motives.

It is less suited to viewers looking for a strictly realistic police procedural. The series embraces melodrama, heightened performances, glossy locations, publicity scandals, and an intentionally theatrical opening. Its pleasure comes from the combination of whodunit mechanics and wealthy-family soap opera—not from procedural naturalism.

Is The Perfect Couple based on a true story?

Does The Perfect Couple have the same ending as the book?

Yes, but the ending is substantially different. In the novel, Merritt accidentally drowns while looking for her ring. The series changes the death into an intentional murder committed by Abby.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Perfect Couple is a six-episode Netflix murder mystery about a Nantucket dynasty whose wedding weekend collapses after Merritt’s death. The series’ decisive twist is that Abby killed Merritt to protect her family’s inheritance, while the novel resolves Merritt’s death as an accident. That change makes the adaptation a separate mystery rather than a screen version with the same ending.
