Ryan Seacrest has completed his transition into the regular host of Wheel of Fortune. Pat Sajak announced his retirement on June 12, 2023; Seacrest was named his successor on June 27, 2023; and Seacrest’s first syndicated episode aired September 9, 2024.
Ryan Seacrest is no longer merely the planned successor to Pat Sajak—he is now the regular host of Wheel of Fortune. Sajak announced in June 2023 that Season 41 would be his last. Sony Pictures Television named Seacrest as his replacement later that month, and Seacrest began hosting the syndicated program’s 42nd season on September 9, 2024.
Vanna White stayed with the show as co-host, the familiar puzzle-and-wheel format remained in place, and the program introduced a refreshed visual presentation and redesigned set. In other words, this was a change of host and presentation—not a wholesale reboot of Wheel of Fortune.
Why Pat Sajak left Wheel of Fortune
On June 12, 2023, Pat Sajak announced that the upcoming 41st season would be his final season as host. He had led the syndicated version of Wheel of Fortune for 41 seasons and had been associated with the program for more than four decades.

Sajak’s departure was planned as a retirement from the regular syndicated show rather than an abrupt cancellation or replacement. Sony said he would remain connected to the program as a consultant for three years after his hosting tenure.
His final regular-season episode aired on June 7, 2024. The farewell broadcast included a closing message in which Sajak reflected on the privilege of hosting the long-running game show and thanked the audience that had watched him for decades. His exit from the weekday program also did not mean an immediate departure from every part of the franchise: Sajak continued with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune for a period after the regular show’s transition, according to Associated Press coverage.
When Ryan Seacrest was announced as the new host
Sony Pictures Television announced Ryan Seacrest as Sajak’s successor on June 27, 2023, just over two weeks after Sajak revealed his retirement plan.
Seacrest described the opportunity as a significant responsibility. His television background made him a familiar choice for a program built around live studio energy, contestant interviews and a dependable host-contestant rhythm. Before joining Wheel of Fortune, he was widely known for hosting American Idol and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, in addition to his radio, production and other entertainment work.

When Ryan Seacrest officially took over
Seacrest’s first regular syndicated episode aired September 9, 2024, at the beginning of Season 42. That date completed the transition announced the previous year; descriptions saying that Seacrest is “about to replace” Sajak are now outdated.
The premiere introduced Seacrest on a redesigned set and included his acknowledgment that he had large shoes to fill. Vanna White remained beside him, continuing the familiar letter-revealing role that she has held throughout the show’s modern era.
The core structure did not change. Contestants still spin the wheel, solve word puzzles, discuss their lives with the host and compete in the bonus round. The transition is therefore best understood as the start of a new hosting era, not as a format reboot.

What happened to Vanna White?
Vanna White was not replaced. She stayed on Wheel of Fortune during the change from Sajak to Seacrest and continued as co-host of both the regular and celebrity editions in current ABC materials.
In September 2023, the Associated Press reported that White had extended her contract for two additional seasons. Her continued presence helped preserve one of the program’s most recognizable elements while the host’s position changed.

Did Seacrest’s debut improve the ratings?
The initial ratings reports were encouraging, but they need to be stated within their specific time periods rather than treated as proof that Seacrest has permanently surpassed Sajak.
- Premiere: The September 9, 2024 episode drew approximately 9.63 million viewers, according to TV Insider’s report citing Nielsen and trade data. It was described as the show’s strongest season premiere since 2015.
- First week: The opening week averaged approximately 8.31 million viewers and ranked first among syndicated shows for that week in the same reporting.
- September 9–October 6 period: A later October 2024 report cited an average of approximately 7.99 million viewers, up 12% year over year, and said the program briefly outperformed Jeopardy! in the comparison being reported.
Those figures describe the launch and an early four-week period. They do not establish a definitive long-term ratings comparison between Seacrest’s tenure and Sajak’s 41-season run. Syndicated ratings can also vary by market, time slot and measurement period.
Where to watch Ryan Seacrest’s Wheel of Fortune
The regular weekday Wheel of Fortune remains a syndicated television program. Its channel and airtime depend on local listings, so viewers should check their local station, television provider or listings service rather than assume that every market carries it at the same time.
That distribution arrangement is separate from the celebrity edition. ABC’s current materials identify Seacrest as host of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and White as co-host. ABC announced in May 2026 that 10 new celebrity episodes would stream exclusively on Hulu and Disney+ beginning June 12, 2026, subject to platform availability and regional restrictions.
That announcement applies to Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. It should not be read as confirmation that the regular syndicated weekday series is universally available on Hulu or Disney+.

What is different in the Seacrest era?
The visible changes include Seacrest in the host position, a redesigned set and a refreshed presentation. The essential viewer experience remains recognizable: contestants solve familiar word puzzles, spin the wheel, speak with the host and compete for prizes and the bonus-round result.

That balance matters because Wheel of Fortune depends on repetition and familiarity. A new host can change the show’s tone and pacing, but retaining White, the puzzle mechanics and the recognizable sequence of rounds allows longtime viewers to follow the program without learning a new game.

Viewers interested in recreating the show’s central activity at home can look for the Wheel of Fortune board game. The official Wheel of Fortune shop lists a branded board game designed around the show’s puzzle-solving concept. Before buying, confirm the current edition, age range, contents and seller because product listings, prices and availability can change.
For a quieter, book-style option, the official shop also lists Wheel of Fortune Brain Games Word Puzzles. A Wheel of Fortune puzzle book may be a better fit for someone who enjoys solving word puzzles alone or wants a small fan gift rather than a group game.
The franchise also promotes official mobile and online puzzle games. Those are digital options, not Amazon physical products, and availability may depend on the device, app store or territory.
