What does “maven” mean?

A maven is an expert or highly knowledgeable person, particularly someone regarded as an authority in a specific field. For example, you might call someone a technology maven, a cooking maven, or a film maven if they know an unusually large amount about that subject.

The word entered English through Yiddish and ultimately traces back to a Hebrew term associated with understanding. Its defining nuance is deep, authoritative knowledge—not simply being a professional in any field.

How Wordle works

Wordle gives you six attempts to identify a hidden five-letter word. After each guess, the tiles provide feedback:

  • Green means the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
  • Yellow means the letter appears in the answer but is in the wrong position.
  • Gray means the letter does not appear in the answer, subject to Wordle’s rules for repeated letters.

There is one new daily puzzle, and the same puzzle is available to players on that day. The official New York Times Games app presents Wordle as a five-letter guessing game with a six-guess limit. Wordle is also included among the New York Times Games offerings; access conditions can vary by product, location, and date, so a Games subscription should not automatically be treated as required for every player.

Want to play Wordle together offline?

Wordle: The Party Game is a physical tabletop adaptation from Hasbro and The New York Times designed for group play. It is not the same product as the daily online Wordle, but it can be a practical option for family game night or for playing without a phone or browser.

For solo solving, gifting, or a broader collection of paper puzzles, Puzzle Mania!: Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Minis and More! is an official New York Times Games puzzle book published by Simon & Schuster. It includes Wordle-inspired material alongside puzzles based on several other NYT Games, rather than reproducing only the July 2 daily puzzle.
