The original Jardiance commercial woman is Deanna Colón. The performer viewers often mean when they ask about the “new Jardiance lady” is generally identified as Rachel Strutt—although her surname is also written “Stutt” in some online references. Strutt appeared in later versions of the campaign around January 2024.
What has not been established is the most repeated claim online: that Jardiance replaced Colón because viewers hated her. The timing is documented in secondary coverage, but Jardiance, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, the advertising agency, and the performers have not publicly confirmed that backlash caused the change.
Who was the original Jardiance lady?
The woman in the original, widely circulated musical Jardiance advertisement was Deanna Colón, a singer, songwriter, vocal coach, and performer. The commercial presented her singing and dancing through a colorful production built around the phrase “a little pill with a big story to tell.” It became especially prominent during 2023.

Colón was already an experienced performer rather than an anonymous commercial actor. She previously competed on America’s Got Talent, reaching the quarterfinals, and has also been associated with MasterChef. In an interview with The Washington Post, she explained that the commercial character was a woman with Type 2 diabetes who was “making lemonade out of lemons.” The intention was to show someone active and optimistic rather than ashamed of her condition. The Washington Post’s reporting on Colón and the backlash provides the clearest public account of her role and response.
Who is the new Jardiance lady?
The newer performer is generally identified as Rachel Strutt. Public acting references list Strutt as an actress and performer with credits including Pam & Tommy and other projects. Some online pages spell the name “Rachel Stutt,” but “Rachel Strutt” is the spelling used by the more detailed entertainment coverage and acting references, including IMDbPro’s listing.
Secondary coverage places Strutt in later Jardiance advertising beginning around January 2024. One report says Strutt posted that she had been “in the studio recording the Jardiance vocals,” suggesting involvement in the musical production as well as the on-camera campaign. That does not, however, amount to a complete official cast announcement for every Jardiance commercial.
The most accurate description is therefore: Strutt is publicly associated with a later on-camera version of the campaign, but the advertiser has not published a definitive cast list explaining every performer and vocal credit.

Does Rachel Strutt sing the Jardiance commercial?
There is no single answer that can safely be applied to every later version.
- Deanna Colón is strongly associated with the lead vocal in the original 2023 musical commercial.
- Rachel Strutt has reportedly discussed recording Jardiance vocals, which indicates that she may have contributed to the music.
- A separate secondary report claims that professional vocalist Vicki Vox supplied the singing voice while Strutt appeared on camera. That claim has not been corroborated by Jardiance, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, or an official version-specific credit.
So it would be too definite to say either that Strutt certainly sings every newer commercial or that she definitely does not sing. Vocal arrangements can also vary between edits and campaign versions. Unless an official credit identifies the version in question, the defensible wording is that Strutt is linked to a later on-camera version and that the vocals are not fully documented publicly.
Why did people hate the Jardiance commercial?
The backlash was aimed at several aspects of the advertisement, and it was often unfairly redirected at Colón personally. The main complaints concerned the campaign’s format, repetition, tone, and presentation of medical information.
1. The jingle was designed to be unforgettable
The commercial used a repeated, upbeat hook and a Broadway-style song-and-dance structure. That made it easy to recognize, but it also made the ad an “earworm” for many viewers—especially people who encountered it repeatedly during television programming.

Online jokes about the commercial airing “5 million times a day” were exaggerated, but they captured the central frustration: viewers felt they could not escape the song. The Washington Post’s account describes how the ad’s frequency and catchy structure became the focus of internet commentary.
2. The cheerful musical tone felt mismatched to chronic illness
Some viewers found it uncomfortable to see people singing and dancing enthusiastically about diabetes and a prescription medication. A chronic disease is a serious, often exhausting part of life, and the commercial’s colorful, theatrical presentation struck critics as excessively cheerful or trivializing.
That response reflects a genuine advertising trade-off. A musical format can make a health message memorable, but the spectacle can also overwhelm the subject. In the Jardiance campaign, many people discussed the jingle and the lead performer more than the drug’s actual indications or safety information.
The commercial depicts an upbeat character responding positively to treatment. It does not mean that people with diabetes are happy to have diabetes, nor does it claim that the disease itself is desirable.
3. The visuals competed with the medical information
The campaign’s elaborate presentation also attracted regulatory scrutiny. In 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration objected to several Jardiance television advertisements. In a letter concerning a “Supermarket” commercial, the FDA described a woman singing and dancing through rapid scene changes and concluded that the fast-paced choreography and attention-grabbing visuals were unrelated to the medical information being presented. The agency determined that the advertisement was false or misleading. Read the FDA letter concerning the “Supermarket” advertisement.
The FDA made similar findings regarding a “Movie Night” commercial featuring a man singing and dancing and a “Softball” commercial featuring another male lead. FDA letter concerning “Movie Night” and FDA letter concerning “Softball”.
These findings do not show that the FDA objected to Colón herself, and they do not prove that a particular performer was removed because viewers disliked the commercial. They do show that the campaign’s central creative choice—placing medical claims inside a highly distracting musical production—created a regulatory problem as well as an audience-relations problem.
4. Online criticism turned into body-shaming
Colón told The Washington Post that she received hateful direct messages and that comments on videos involving the commercial included hostility toward overweight people. She connected the response to weight stigma and said she wanted to represent women who do not fit conventional advertising ideals.

It is important to separate two kinds of reaction:
- Complaints about the song, repetition, acting style, choreography, or advertising concept are criticism of a campaign.
- Insults aimed at Colón’s body are personal harassment and fat-shaming.
Those reactions were often blended together online, creating the misleading impression that viewers primarily hated Colón. Much of the documented frustration was directed at the ad’s saturation and creative style, not at the identity of the actor who performed it.
Did Jardiance replace Deanna Colón because of the backlash?
That has not been verified.
Later advertising featuring Strutt appeared after Colón’s commercial had become a major subject of online discussion. That sequence makes a campaign refresh plausible, but it does not establish why the change happened. Advertising campaigns routinely rotate performers because of scheduling, production plans, creative changes, contract terms, audience testing, or a decision to introduce a different version.
There is no public statement from Jardiance, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, the advertising agency, or Colón saying that online hostility caused the recasting. Coverage that presents “Jardiance fired Deanna Colón because the internet hated her” as a settled fact goes beyond the available evidence.
The careful conclusion is: Jardiance introduced later commercials featuring Rachel Strutt after Colón’s version became widely discussed, but the reason for the performer change remains unconfirmed.

What did Deanna Colón say about the new performer?
Colón urged viewers not to attack the newer woman. Her message was summarized in later coverage as a request that people be kind to “this new lady” and not send her hateful messages.
That matters because it undercuts the idea of a public feud between the performers. The available evidence shows Colón defending the successor rather than blaming her for the campaign change. The performer on screen is not the person who decides how often an advertisement airs, how it is edited, what claims it contains, or how the campaign is designed.
There was not just one “new Jardiance lady”
Online discussions often reduce the campaign to one original woman and one replacement. The advertising record is more complicated. Jardiance has used multiple creative versions and lead performers, including male leads in later spots.
| Commercial version identified in FDA documents | General description |
|---|---|
| “Supermarket” | A woman sings and dances with other people in a supermarket setting. |
| “Movie Night” | A man sings and dances at a movie-themed event. |
| “Softball” | A man sings and dances at a softball game. |
As a result, “the new Jardiance lady” may refer to a specific version that a viewer saw rather than to one permanent, officially designated character. Rachel Strutt is the best-supported public identification for the newer woman commonly discussed online, but it should not be treated as a complete cast list for the entire campaign.

What Jardiance is actually approved to do
The commercial is sometimes discussed as though Jardiance were primarily a weight-loss medication. That is incorrect. Jardiance is the brand name for empagliflozin, an SGLT2 medication. The current FDA prescribing information identifies these approved uses:
- Improving blood-sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with Type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise.
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure.
- Reducing the risk of sustained kidney-function decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization in certain adults with chronic kidney disease.
See the 2025 FDA-approved Jardiance prescribing information for the full indications, limitations, contraindications, warnings, and dosing information.
Jardiance is not FDA-approved as a general weight-loss drug. Weight loss can occur in clinical studies, and the official drug information reports that effect, but that does not make weight management its approved primary indication. DailyMed’s Jardiance information provides additional prescribing details.
The label also says Jardiance is not recommended for improving glycemic control in people with Type 1 diabetes because of the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Anyone considering or taking the medication should rely on a clinician and the official prescribing information rather than on a television commercial or online discussion.
Common claims about the Jardiance lady that go too far
“The new Jardiance lady is definitely Rachel Stutt.”
Too confident. Rachel Strutt is the best-supported public identification, but “Strutt” and “Stutt” both appear online, and the manufacturer has not published a comprehensive cast announcement. “Generally identified as Rachel Strutt” is more accurate.
“Jardiance replaced Deanna because people hated her.”
Unverified. The later appearance of Strutt is reported, but no public source establishes that internet backlash caused the change.
“Rachel Strutt definitely sings every newer version.”
Unverified. Reports link Strutt to recording Jardiance vocals, while another source claims a separate vocalist was used. The vocal credit may vary by version and has not been officially documented in a way that settles the question.
“Jardiance is a weight-loss drug.”
Wrong as a description of its FDA-approved use. Its approved uses include Type 2 diabetes, specified cardiovascular-risk reduction, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease—not general weight management.

“The commercial proves that people with diabetes are happy to have diabetes.”
That is an interpretation, not a fact. The advertisement depicts one upbeat fictional character responding positively to treatment. It does not represent every person with diabetes or make a value judgment about having the disease.
Bottom line
The original Jardiance lady was Deanna Colón. The newer woman viewers commonly identify is Rachel Strutt, although spelling and credit information remain inconsistent. The campaign shift has not been publicly explained, so it is not responsible to claim that Jardiance replaced Colón because of online hate.
The backlash came from several overlapping sources: an extremely repetitive earworm, a theatrical tone that some viewers felt trivialized chronic illness, and personal body-shaming directed at Colón. Later FDA findings about the campaign’s distracting musical visuals added a separate regulatory dimension. The most accurate story is not that the actress caused the controversy; it is that Jardiance created an unusually conspicuous pharmaceutical campaign—and that the performer became the target of attention that was largely generated by the campaign itself.
