Souther was not an official member of the Eagles. He was, instead, a close Glenn Frey collaborator, a member of the band’s creative circle, and one of the principal songwriters behind the Southern California country-rock sound. His songs were recorded by the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and other major performers.
Who was JD Souther?
Professionally known as JD Souther—though “J.D. Souther” also appears in some older references—John David Souther was born in Detroit and raised in Amarillo, Texas. His father was a big-band singer who ran a music store, and Souther grew up around country, jazz, pop, and traditional standards.

That broad musical education became an important part of his identity as a writer. Souther’s work is often grouped with country-rock because of his Los Angeles connections and the records on which his songs appeared, but his writing drew on more than one genre. He could write a polished pop melody, a country narrative, a jazz-influenced ballad, or a conversational lyric that sounded as though it had been lifted from real life.
His partnership with Glenn Frey and the Eagles
After moving to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, Souther met Glenn Frey. The two briefly performed and wrote together as Longbranch Pennywhistle. Although the duo did not become a lasting commercial act, the friendship and creative partnership connected Souther to the musicians and writers who would form the core of the Eagles’ world.
Souther co-wrote several major Eagles songs, including:
- “Best of My Love”
- “New Kid in Town”
- “Victim of Love”
- “Heartache Tonight”
- “James Dean”
- “Doolin-Dalton”
“Heartache Tonight” was written by Souther with Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Bob Seger. The Songwriters Hall of Fame lists four of those Eagles-associated songs—“Heartache Tonight,” “Victim of Love,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Best of My Love”—among the defining compositions of his career.
One especially revealing part of Souther’s Eagles connection is “How Long.” He recorded the song himself in 1972, years before the Eagles released their version in 2007. That history shows the relationship was not limited to Souther supplying outside material: the Eagles also revisited a song from his own solo catalog.

The Eagles’ official memorial for Souther also highlighted his work with Don Henley beyond the band, including collaborations on “The Heart of the Matter,” “Little Tin God,” “If Dirt Were Dollars,” and “Talking to the Moon.”
How JD Souther helped Linda Ronstadt reach a wider audience
Souther wrote ten songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt, according to his Songwriters Hall of Fame biography. Among the best-known are “Faithless Love,” “Simple Man, Simple Dream,” and “Prisoner in Disguise.” Other Ronstadt-associated songs and performances include “White Rhythm and Blues,” “Sometimes You Can’t Win,” and “Hearts Against the Wind.”
Souther and Ronstadt were romantically involved during the 1970s, but the lasting importance of their connection was musical. Ronstadt’s recordings gave Souther’s songs a prominent platform and helped introduce his writing to a large audience. Her interpretations also demonstrated the flexibility of his material: his songs could sit naturally alongside country, rock, pop, and adult-contemporary repertoire.

His own recording career and “You’re Only Lonely”
Souther’s first solo album, John David Souther, was released in 1972. His later albums included:
| Album | Year |
|---|---|
| John David Souther | 1972 |
| Black Rose | 1976 |
| You’re Only Lonely | 1979 |
| Home by Dawn | 1984 |
| If the World Was You | 2008 |
| Natural History | 2011 |
| Midnight in Tokyo | 2012 |
| Tenderness | 2015 |
His biggest solo hit was “You’re Only Lonely,” the title track of his 1979 album. The song reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent five weeks at No. 1 on the adult-contemporary chart, according to the release and biographical sources associated with the song.
Rank #3
The album is also a useful snapshot of the Los Angeles studio community that surrounded Souther. Its guests and collaborators included members of the Eagles, Jackson Browne, David Sanborn, John Sebastian, Phil Everly, Tom Scott, and others. That lineup illustrates why Souther’s solo work matters: he was not simply a behind-the-scenes writer whose songs became famous through other singers. He was a recording artist working at the center of the same musical network.
For listeners who want Souther’s own performance rather than only the Eagles or Ronstadt recordings, the 2024 expanded You’re Only Lonely CD is a natural starting point. Omnivore Recordings issued expanded CD and LP editions on July 26, 2024. The release is a solo Souther album, not an Eagles compilation; buyers should check the current retailer listing for the exact contents and format.

Other notable songwriting work
Souther’s reach extended beyond the Eagles and Ronstadt. He co-wrote “Her Town Too” with James Taylor, a song that reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Songwriters Hall of Fame also recognized the breadth of his work for performers including James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt.
The Hall inducted Souther in 2013, calling him a “principal architect of the Southern California sound.” Its biography said songs associated with his writing appeared on albums that sold more than 117 million copies worldwide. That figure is an institutional estimate cited in the Hall’s induction-era biography, not a newly audited sales total, but it conveys the scale of the catalog in which his work appeared.

Acting roles and later years
Souther also worked as an actor. His television appearances included Thirtysomething, Nashville, and Purgatory. On Nashville, he played Watty White, a legendary producer and songwriter. His film credits included Postcards from the Edge, My Girl 2, and Deadline.
His final original album was Tenderness, released by Sony Music Masterworks on May 8, 2015. The album came after a long period in which Souther’s reputation rested as much on his writing and collaborations as on his own recordings, and it formed part of a later-career return to performing and releasing music.

Souther’s importance is easy to underestimate if his career is reduced to a list of songs recorded by other people. He was a distinctive solo artist, but his greatest influence often traveled through interpretation. The Eagles’ harmonies and polished arrangements, Ronstadt’s vocal authority, Henley’s solo work, and Taylor’s presentation all carried pieces of Souther’s songwriting into different corners of popular music.
He also occupied a rare position in the 1970s Los Angeles scene: close enough to major bands to influence their repertoire, but independent enough to maintain a separate voice. Calling him an “Eagle” is inaccurate. Calling him a peripheral figure is equally misleading. He was one of the writers and collaborators who helped make the Eagles’ catalog, and the wider Southern California sound, what it became.
JD Souther died at his New Mexico home on September 17, 2024, at age 78. His songs remain present not only in his own albums but in some of the most durable recordings associated with the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, and James Taylor.
