In an interview published by HELLO! on October 1, 2024, the former NCIS star said she wanted to be present as herself—not continually inhabit another identity—for “the good and the bad and the painful.”
Perrette’s statement means fans should not expect her to reprise forensic specialist Abby Sciuto in a scripted NCIS return. It does not mean she has disappeared from film, television or public life: her documented work after acting has included documentary projects and advocacy-related appearances.
Why Pauley Perrette says she is done with acting
Perrette’s explanation has four connected parts:
- She has changed. She said she is no longer the same person who entered the acting profession.
- She wants authenticity. Rather than continually inhabiting characters, she wants to be herself.
- She wants to experience life directly. That includes “the good and the bad and the painful,” as she described it in the interview.
- She now views acting differently. Perrette characterized acting as an escape because a character did not have to carry the problems she was facing in her own life.
That last point is Perrette’s personal description of her experience, not a clinical diagnosis or an objective definition of acting. The most accurate interpretation is that her priorities changed: she no longer sees taking on another identity as compatible with the authentic life she wants to live.
Her NCIS legacy as Abby Sciuto
Before her retirement, Perrette was best known for playing Abby Sciuto, the upbeat forensic specialist on CBS’s NCIS. Abby’s distinctive style, gothic wardrobe, tattoos, pigtails and emotional warmth made her one of the show’s most recognizable characters.

Perrette’s regular run ended with NCIS Season 15. Her final episode was “Two Steps Back,” the Season 15 story associated with Abby’s departure from the series. CBS’s official episode archive identifies Season 15 as a distinct season, while contemporary cast and home-video listings document Perrette’s place in that season.
For viewers who want to revisit Abby Sciuto’s final regular season, the NCIS Season 15 DVD is the most direct physical way to do so. It is a season set—not a retirement documentary or a Perrette interview collection—so buyers should check the specific retailer listing for its included episodes and extras.
What happened after NCIS?
Perrette’s departure from NCIS produced years of public speculation, including reports about alleged workplace tensions and social-media statements involving people connected with the show. Those accounts differ in sourcing and should not be reduced to a single proven explanation.
The better-supported account is narrower: Perrette left after her Season 15 run, later told HELLO! that she would never again return to acting, and subsequently described a life and career increasingly centered on authenticity and documentary work. That does not establish that one particular incident was the sole reason she left the series.

Perrette’s documentary work is not an acting comeback
Retiring from acting does not mean withdrawing from every form of film or television work. Perrette has continued to be associated with documentary projects involving history, civil rights and LGBTQ-related stories. In those projects, her role may be producer, director, executive producer, interview participant or advocate rather than a performer playing a scripted character.
One project connected with her post-acting work is Red Ribbons of Love, a documentary about the history of the AIDS ribbons displayed at Hollywood United Methodist Church. Coverage has described Perrette as directing or producing the project.
She has also been involved as a producer with Studio One Forever, a documentary about the influential Los Angeles nightclub Studio One. The film’s official website advertises physical Blu-ray and DVD editions. Readers interested in that part of Perrette’s career can look for the Studio One Forever DVD or Blu-ray, while checking current availability and the exact edition before buying.
These projects are consistent with Perrette’s stated position. Producing a documentary, appearing in an interview or supporting an advocacy project is not the same as accepting a scripted acting role.

Should fans expect Abby Sciuto to return?
Based on Perrette’s public statement, fans should not expect an Abby comeback. She did not describe herself as taking a temporary break or waiting for the right script. In the October 1, 2024, HELLO! interview, she said she would “never again” return to the screen as an actor and explained that she wanted to be herself all the time. TVLine reported the following day that she was officially retired from acting.
That is a strong and apparently settled personal intention, but it should still be phrased accurately. Perrette can change her mind in the future; no interview can prove what a person will do forever. The responsible claim is that she has publicly retired from acting and has given no credible indication of a comeback. Research available through August 13, 2026, located no credible acting-return announcement.
Appearances that would not necessarily change that conclusion
- A reunion photograph: A picture with former cast members is not a new acting role.
- An interview: Appearing on a television or online program as herself is different from performing a scripted character.
- A documentary: Participation in a nonfiction film, including an on-camera appearance, does not automatically constitute acting.
- Archival or promotional material: Reused NCIS footage or a retrospective promotion is not a return to the series.
- An advocacy appearance: Supporting a cause or attending an event is separate from returning to scripted entertainment.
Where to revisit Perrette’s work
The clearest starting point is NCIS Season 15, the final regular season of Perrette’s Abby Sciuto era. A physical season set is useful for viewers who want a permanent copy, while legal digital and streaming options may also exist depending on territory, date and subscription plan.

Availability changes, particularly for streaming catalogs. Readers searching for where to watch NCIS Season 15 should verify the current service, region and purchase terms rather than relying on an old availability list. Paramount+ and related digital distributors have been identified as possible viewing routes in the United States, but the exact catalog and pricing can change.
For a look at Perrette’s work beyond scripted television, Studio One Forever offers a separate documentary route. Its physical editions are distinct from the NCIS home-video releases and should not be presented as acting projects.
