Sweetpea: Season 1 is a six-episode British dark comedy thriller about Rhiannon Lewis, an overlooked newspaper employee whose private revenge fantasies become real after her father’s death and the return of her former school bully. It is a morally complicated origin story—not a straightforward vigilante fantasy—and it changes significant characters and elements of C.J. Skuse’s 2017 novel.

What is Sweetpea: Season 1 about?

Sweetpea is a six-episode British dark comedy thriller about Rhiannon Lewis, an overlooked employee at a local newspaper who has spent years imagining revenge against the people who dismiss, mistreat, or underestimate her. After her father’s death and the return of her former school bully Julia, those private fantasies begin to become reality.

The series is less a straightforward vigilante story than a study of how humiliation, grief, resentment, and opportunity can push an apparently ordinary person toward murder. Sky describes it as a coming-of-rage story: Rhiannon discovers that violence gives her a sense of power, then has to manage the consequences of becoming the person she once only imagined.

The first season is stylish, uncomfortable, and deliberately morally complicated. It works best for viewers who enjoy darkly comic revenge thrillers and female antiheroes, although its interpretation of the source novel has divided critics and readers.

Rhiannon Lewis and the story’s central idea

Rhiannon works at a local newspaper and hopes to become a journalist, but she is treated as background noise by many of the people around her. Her professional frustrations are joined by personal pressures: her father is ill and dies, Julia Blenkingsopp—who bullied her at school—returns to town, and a new colleague, AJ, changes the dynamics of her workplace and romantic life.

Rhiannon has maintained a private list of people who have wronged her. The list initially functions as an outlet for anger and powerlessness. Once she crosses the line into killing, however, the fantasy becomes a practical problem: she must investigate the people involved, control her behavior, and keep anyone from connecting her to the crimes.

That premise gives the season two competing energies. On one side, it has the propulsion of a revenge thriller, with Rhiannon taking action against people she believes deserve it. On the other, the show asks whether her targets truly deserve punishment, whether Rhiannon is rationalizing her choices, and whether the attention she receives from violence is becoming addictive. The result is not a simple story of righteous revenge.

Cast and characters

  • Ella Purnell as Rhiannon Lewis: The overlooked newspaper employee whose private kill list becomes real. Purnell also served as an executive producer on the series, her first executive-producer role according to Sky’s production information.
  • Nicôle Lecky as Julia Blenkingsopp: Rhiannon’s former school bully. Julia’s return is one of the forces that destabilizes Rhiannon and drives the season’s revenge conflict.
  • Jon Pointing as Craig: A man from Rhiannon’s personal life who appears among the people she resents and watches.
  • Calam Lynch as AJ: A new employee at the newspaper whose arrival affects Rhiannon’s professional and romantic circumstances.
  • Leah Harvey as Marina: A supporting figure in Rhiannon’s social and workplace world.
  • Jeremy Swift as Norman: Another part of the newspaper environment that shapes Rhiannon’s daily life.
  • Dustin Demri-Burns as Jeff: A supporting character connected to the season’s wider social and investigative threads.
  • Ingrid Oliver as D.I. Diana St. John: The detective who broadens the story beyond Rhiannon’s private point of view and brings investigative pressure into the plot.

Ella Jones directed Season 1. The listed writing team includes Kirstie Swain, Krissie Ducker, Selina Lim, Emme Hoy, Anna Jordan, and Laura Jayne Tunbridge.

Is the show faithful to C.J. Skuse’s book?

Only in broad terms. The television series is based on C.J. Skuse’s 2017 novel, but Sky describes it as an adaptation that keeps the book’s tone and some story beats while changing characters and elements of Rhiannon’s backstory. Ella Purnell has also described the book and screenplay as two substantially different things.

The most important difference is where the story begins. The novel opens with a more fully formed and deliberately murderous Rhiannon. Season 1 instead spends much more time on the origin of that transformation: her years of being overlooked, the pressure surrounding her father’s illness and death, Julia’s return, and the circumstances that lead to her first killing.

That makes the show an origin story rather than a scene-by-scene screen version of the novel. Viewers who expect the television Rhiannon to behave exactly like the book’s narrator may find the adaptation softened or reconfigured. Viewers approaching the novel after the series should expect a different version of the character, a different balance of interior voice and black humor, and a related but distinct continuity.

United States

Starz lists the six-episode 2024 season in its catalog and identifies the program as a Starz Original. A separate availability check found listings through YouTube TV and Spectrum On Demand, but U.S. streaming and on-demand rights are volatile. Treat those listings as time-sensitive rather than permanent. For the official U.S. service, check the current Starz catalog before using the watch Sweetpea on Starz route.

Because the series is rated 18 in the U.K. and TV-MA in the U.S., it is intended for adults. The classification may vary by territory or platform, but the underlying content does not make this a family viewing recommendation.

Content warnings

Sweetpea contains murder, violent scenes, grief, bullying, coercive or abusive behavior, and disturbing crime-related material. Its dark-comedy framing can make some scenes feel deliberately playful or uncomfortable, but the subject matter remains adult and potentially upsetting. The show’s violence is tied to Rhiannon’s emotional and psychological deterioration rather than presented only as consequence-free action.

Reception: is Sweetpea worth watching?

The critical response has been mixed rather than universally enthusiastic. At the time of the cited checks, Metacritic listed the season at 69 based on 12 critic reviews, while IMDb displayed a 7.2/10 user rating. Both figures are moving measurements and should not be treated as permanent scores.

The more favorable case for the series is that it offers a brisk revenge thriller with a layered central performance, sharply uncomfortable humor, and a morally ambiguous woman at its center. TIME placed its appeal near shows such as Dead to Me and Bad Sisters, particularly in its combination of revenge energy, character drama, and moral uncertainty.

The principal criticism concerns the adaptation’s tone. The Guardian argued that the television version softened or removed too much of the novel’s black humor, interior voice, and more confrontational treatment of female rage. That criticism is especially relevant to readers who loved Skuse’s book. The show’s Rhiannon is designed to be understandable and watchable as she changes; the novel’s version is more immediately and aggressively transgressive.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

So, is it worth watching? If you want a compact, adult thriller about a socially invisible woman discovering the power—and danger—of retaliation, yes. If your priority is a faithful reproduction of the novel’s narration and darkest comic edge, approach it as a reinterpretation, not a definitive screen translation.

What the season is really exploring

Invisibility and recognition

Rhiannon’s anger is not caused by one isolated insult. It accumulates through years of being ignored, undervalued, and treated as less important than the people around her. Violence gives her an audience, but the attention is inseparable from the risk of exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revenge versus justice

The series borrows the emotional language of revenge while refusing to make Rhiannon a reliable judge. Her list may begin with genuine grievances, but the process of selecting targets exposes how easily personal injury can be turned into a moral alibi.

Female rage as both subject and marketing hook

Sweetpea belongs to a group of recent thrillers built around women who refuse to remain polite, passive, or invisible. Its strongest scenes use that premise to examine power. Its weaker moments, according to the adaptation’s critics, can make the idea feel more palatable than the novel intended.

The workplace as a pressure cooker

The newspaper is not merely a setting. Rhiannon’s ambition to become a journalist, the arrival of AJ, and her relationships with colleagues make professional status part of the story’s emotional machinery. Her personal transformation cannot be separated from the fact that she feels trapped in a role where other people decide how visible she is.

What to read after Season 1

The literary series continues with In Bloom, which follows Rhiannon after the events of the first novel. It is best approached as a follow-up to Skuse’s book rather than as a direct television Season 2 tie-in, because the novels and the show are related but distinct continuities. Readers who want the next literary installment can look for In Bloom by C.J. Skuse in paperback or audiobook formats.

There is no need to assume that every product listing using the word Sweetpea is connected to the series. No authoritative evidence was located for an official Season 1 DVD, Blu-ray, soundtrack CD, or vinyl release. Unofficial merchandise and unrelated products should not be presented as show tie-ins.

Will there be a Season 2?

Sky announced a second television season in December 2024 and later stated that Season 2 was scheduled for Sky in 2026. Later Sky materials describe Ella Purnell returning and tease a new story involving a promotion, a rebound relationship, and a copycat killer.

Final verdict

Sweetpea: Season 1 is a six-episode, TV-MA dark comedy thriller that turns an overlooked woman’s revenge fantasies into an escalating crime story. Ella Purnell anchors it as Rhiannon, while Julia’s return, the newspaper workplace, and the investigation give the season several sources of pressure. Its most important qualification is that it is an adaptation with major changes, not a literal filming of C.J. Skuse’s novel.

Watch it for the performance, the compact thriller structure, and the uneasy question of whether empowerment can become another name for harm. Then read the novel if you want the more interior, more confrontational version of Rhiannon.
