Kim and Barry Plath are the parents at the center of TLC’s Welcome to Plathville, but the family now spans several adult households and competing ideas about independence, marriage, privacy and grief. They have nine surviving children—Ethan, Hosanna, Micah, Moriah, Lydia, Isaac, Amber, Cassia and Mercy—and another son, Joshua, who died in a 2008 accident before the series premiered.

The show began on November 5, 2019, with a highly sheltered rural-Georgia upbringing as its defining feature. By Season 8, which aired in 2026, the story included Kim and Barry’s continuing divorce drama, Lydia’s marriage, Ethan’s post-divorce life, Barry’s dating life and the family’s attempt to talk about Joshua’s death.

The Plath family at a glance

  • Series: Welcome to Plathville
  • Network: TLC
  • Premiere: November 5, 2019
  • Parents: Kim Plath and Barry Plath
  • Surviving children: Ethan, Hosanna, Micah, Moriah, Lydia, Isaac, Amber, Cassia and Mercy
  • Child who died before the series: Joshua Plath, who died in a 2008 accident at approximately 17 months old
  • Current research point: Season 8 aired in 2026; no official Season 9 announcement was located in the sources reviewed through August 12, 2026

TLC’s series follows the family as the older children leave home, form relationships, pursue work and music, marry, relocate and challenge the rules of their upbringing. The result is a family story that has increasingly moved away from one household with one set of rules and toward several adult children making separate decisions.

Kim and Barry Plath

Kim and Barry married in July 1997 and were together for roughly 25 years before announcing their separation in 2022. Their marriage, parenting philosophy and eventual split formed the original framework of Welcome to Plathville.

#1 Best Overall

Kim devoted much of the marriage to raising the children. Entertainment coverage has described her as a naturopathic doctor and mother, while Barry has been described as a transportation planner. Those professional descriptions come from secondary reporting rather than a current, independently verified TLC biography, so they are best treated as reported background rather than complete professional profiles.

The conservative, sheltered upbringing

Before the family became a television subject, Kim and Barry raised the children in a highly controlled, conservative household in rural Georgia. The children were homeschooled and had strict limits on television, technology and popular culture. TLC’s promotional descriptions emphasized that they grew up without many experiences that other American children might consider ordinary, including soda, ice cream, television and familiarity with popular superheroes.

The show presents that upbringing as an important source of both family identity and later conflict. Ethan, Micah and Moriah were among the older children whose adult lives brought them into contact with music, travel, dating, work and broader culture. Their increasing independence exposed disagreements about parental authority, religion, boundaries and how much influence parents should retain after their children become adults.

Separation and divorce status

Kim and Barry announced their separation in 2022, and the breakup remained an active storyline in later seasons. TLC’s Season 7 preview described the pair as continuing to deal with divorce drama. Coverage of that season indicated that the legal separation had not yet been finalized when the season was filmed or discussed.

Kim filed for divorce in June 2024. Reports citing the filing said she sought primary custody of the couple’s three minor children and requested that marital property and debts be divided. The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a definitive final divorce date. It is therefore more accurate to say that Kim and Barry separated and that Kim filed for divorce than to state without qualification that their divorce was finalized.

By Season 8, Kim was trying to establish a new home, described in the show’s coverage as a possible “forever home” at the family farm. Barry, meanwhile, began dating again after more than two decades. These developments placed the former couple in different stages of rebuilding their lives while they continued to navigate relationships with their children.

Rank #2

Kim and Barry’s children

Kim and Barry have nine surviving children: five sons and four daughters. Joshua, who died in 2008, is discussed separately because he was not part of the original on-camera family lineup when the series premiered in 2019.

Ethan Plath

Ethan is the oldest surviving Plath child and one of the principal cast members from the beginning of the series. He married Olivia in October 2018, shortly before the show premiered. Their marriage became one of the program’s defining storylines because Olivia challenged the restrictions associated with Ethan’s family upbringing, while Ethan struggled to separate his adult life from his parents’ authority and expectations.

Ethan and Olivia announced their separation in October 2023 and filed for divorce in February 2024. Reporting based on court documents said their divorce was finalized in 2026. During Season 8, Ethan attempted to rebuild his life in Georgia, then moved toward Wisconsin while trying to repair or rekindle his relationship with Teegan. His storyline continued the show’s recurring question of how an adult raised in a tightly controlled home creates an identity outside it.

Hosanna Noble

Hosanna is the second-oldest surviving child. She married Timothy Noble in June 2019 and has generally chosen not to participate in Welcome to Plathville. Moriah has explained in interviews that Hosanna married young, moved away and did not want to appear on the show.

Reports identify Hosanna as a violinist and Timothy as a pianist who perform together as a musical duo. Because Hosanna maintains a lower public profile, there is not a reliable basis for treating her absence from the program as proof of estrangement or for filling in unreported details about her private life.

Micah Plath

Micah became known to viewers through modeling and through his move away from the family’s original restrictions. His storylines have included work, relationships and disputes with relatives as he developed a more independent adult life.

In Season 7, TLC highlighted conflict involving Micah, his partner Veronica and other members of the Plath family. The disagreement reflected a broader pattern in the series: as the children establish their own relationships, partners and siblings can become part of disputes that once centered primarily on Kim and Barry.

Moriah Plath

Moriah was initially presented as the family’s rebellious child. She openly pursued music, fashion, tattoos and a lifestyle that differed from the rules of her childhood home. Her willingness to challenge expectations made her one of the earliest visible examples of a Plath child testing independence on camera.

Her relationship with Max Kallschmidt became a major storyline before the couple broke up amid allegations of infidelity. Those allegations were part of the reality-TV and relationship coverage surrounding the breakup and should not be presented as an independently established finding beyond the people’s public accounts and the show’s framing. Later episodes continued to place Moriah among the adult siblings negotiating changing loyalties and relationships.

Lydia Plath

Lydia was long portrayed as one of the especially responsible older daughters, helping with household and family duties. That role changed as she became an adult with a household and marriage of her own.

Lydia became engaged to Zac Wyse in late 2024 and, according to secondary reporting, married him on the Plath family farm in February 2025. Season 8 opened with Lydia and Zac confronting the family about conflicts connected to their wedding. Later episodes depicted tension involving Lydia, Zac and Kim.

Lydia’s storyline marks an important generational shift in the series. She is no longer simply the obedient daughter helping maintain the family home; she is an adult married woman asserting boundaries with her mother and siblings. That is an interpretation of the season’s storylines, not evidence that Lydia has permanently ended her relationships with the family.

Isaac Plath

Isaac is the youngest of the Plath sons. He appeared throughout the series as one of the younger children who grew up on camera and later entered adult family and relationship storylines. Season 8 included Isaac in continuing sibling conflicts and conversations involving Lydia, Zac and the wider family.

Amber Plath

Amber is one of the three youngest Plath daughters. She was a minor during much of the show’s early run, and TLC’s later family coverage places her within the changing post-separation dynamic. A responsible family guide should distinguish what has been shown or said on camera from independently verified biography and avoid unnecessary details about her private life.

Cassia Plath

Cassia is another of the youngest daughters and was also a minor during much of the series. She is part of the nine-child surviving family lineup. The sources reviewed do not sufficiently verify current details about her education, residence, employment or relationships, so those details should not be inferred.

Mercy Plath

Mercy is the youngest of the nine surviving Plath children. Like Amber and Cassia, she received less independent media coverage than the older siblings and was a minor when the show began. Her place in the family can be identified without speculating about aspects of her life that have not been reliably reported.

Joshua Plath and the family’s grief

Joshua was Kim and Barry’s young son who died in a 2008 accident involving a vehicle on the family property. Accounts attributed to Kim and Barry described him as approximately 17 months old. His death occurred before Welcome to Plathville premiered, but the loss became an important subject in later seasons.

The family members have described different memories and reactions to the tragedy, including disagreements about what was discussed, withheld or shared publicly. Those differences should not be converted into a single supposedly objective account, and there is no responsible basis for diagnosing anyone’s response to grief from edited television footage.

Season 8 made Joshua’s death one of its central subjects. Kim sought counseling, led a family conversation about Joshua and later joined the family in honoring him. The episodes placed those discussions alongside disagreements involving Lydia and Zac, making grief, privacy, family control and the right to tell a shared family story important themes of the season.

The Plath family’s major turning points

  1. The sheltered childhood: The children were homeschooled in a conservative household with strict limits on television, technology, popular culture and some ordinary foods.
  2. The 2019 premiere: TLC introduced Kim, Barry and their nine surviving children as a distinctive family unit on November 5, 2019.
  3. The older children leave home: Ethan, Micah and Moriah pursued work, relationships, travel and independence, challenging the rules and assumptions of their childhood.
  4. Ethan and Olivia’s marriage conflict: Their relationship became a proxy conflict over parental authority, religion, family culture and the transition from childhood obedience to adult autonomy.
  5. Kim and Barry separate: Their 2022 split changed the family structure and remained unresolved in the show through the later divorce storylines.
  6. Kim files for divorce: Kim filed in June 2024 and reportedly sought primary custody of the three minor children, along with division of property and debts.
  7. Lydia marries Zac: Lydia’s engagement and 2025 wedding shifted her from a household helper into an adult family member with her own marriage and boundaries.
  8. Joshua’s death is revisited: Season 8 brought counseling, family discussion and remembrance into the center of the program while the siblings were also dealing with present-day conflict.

Season-by-season current status

Welcome to Plathville premiered in November 2019 and had reached eight seasons by 2026. The early seasons focused on the family’s sheltered upbringing and the older children’s first steps into independence. Later seasons increasingly followed several separate households and relationships rather than one unified family home.

Season 7

Season 7 premiered on July 22, 2025. Its storylines included new relationships, Lydia and Zac’s impending marriage, Micah’s relationship conflict and the unresolved Kim-Barry divorce. The season continued the transition from a parent-centered family narrative to one in which adult children and their partners had greater influence over the family’s conflicts.

Season 8

Season 8 premiered on March 31, 2026. TLC’s episode guide listed 12 episodes. The season included Lydia and Zac confronting the family, Kim’s “starting over” party, Barry dating again, Ethan’s relationship with Teegan, Kim’s counseling and the family’s discussions about Joshua’s death.

The 12th episode, “From the Horse’s Mouth,” aired June 16, 2026, and functioned as the season finale according to the sources reviewed. As of August 12, 2026, no official announcement of Season 9 was located. That does not establish that the series is canceled; it means only that a confirmed renewal or premiere date was not available in the reviewed material.

where to watch Welcome to Plathville

The most reliable approach is to start with TLC’s current series and episode pages, then verify the season or episode on the streaming or digital storefront available in your location. Because platform catalogs change, a static list should not be treated as a permanent availability guarantee.

How to understand the family fairly

The series is built around family disagreement, but reality-TV editing does not provide an independent clinical or complete record of anyone’s motives. The most accurate descriptions keep the source of each claim visible.

  • Use phrases such as “the show portrays” or “TLC’s episode description says” when discussing motives, emotional states or family disputes.
  • Keep Joshua distinct from the nine surviving children. He died before the series premiered and was not part of the original family lineup.
  • Do not treat Hosanna’s decision not to appear on the show as proof that she is estranged from her family.
  • Do not say Kim and Barry’s divorce is finalized unless a verified court record or direct official statement establishes that status.
  • Present claims about grief, control, religion and parenting as family members’ perspectives or as reality-TV framing, not as clinical conclusions.
  • Be especially careful with Amber, Cassia and Mercy. They were minors during much of the show’s run and have less independently verified public information than their older siblings.

The clearest through-line is not that every Plath has chosen the same side or that the family has permanently broken apart. It is that a household once organized around strict parental rules has become a collection of adults negotiating marriage, privacy, grief, work, relocation and family boundaries in public.
