Denis Villeneuve is directing Bond 26
Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced Denis Villeneuve as the director of the next James Bond film. He will also serve as an executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe.
Villeneuve brings a filmography associated with large-scale filmmaking, controlled visual design, and serious genre storytelling. His credits include Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario. That résumé makes him a significant creative appointment, but it does not reveal what kind of Bond film he intends to make. That range suggests experience with crime, political tension, historical drama, intimate character pieces, and action-oriented television. It is therefore too early to call Bond 26 a Fleming adaptation, a prequel, an origin story, or a direct continuation of Daniel Craig’s five-film arc. Knight’s screenplay assignment is confirmed; the screenplay’s content is not.

The combination gives the project an established production structure, but it does not indicate that the film has entered principal photography. The casting process remains one of the major unresolved steps, and there is still no public title or plot synopsis.

Why Amazon MGM’s role has changed
Bond 26 is the first major 007 project being developed under Amazon MGM Studios’ new creative-control arrangement. On March 24, 2025, Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli closed a joint venture concerning the James Bond intellectual-property rights. The parties remain co-owners, while Amazon MGM received creative control over future Bond productions.
This is a meaningful change in the franchise’s corporate structure. Amazon had already acquired MGM and held distribution rights to the Bond film library. Under the new arrangement, Amazon MGM moved from being primarily the library’s distributor and a business partner to becoming the party directing the creative development of future Bond films.
Wilson and Broccoli had historically maintained unusually strong control over Bond casting, scripts, directors, and production decisions. Amazon MGM’s new role does not mean that Amazon owns the entire franchise outright. It also does not prove that Bond 26 will be released only on streaming, or that the studio plans to build a Marvel-style Bond universe.
