This ranking weighs four things: how central and threatening the clown is, how consistently frightening the film remains, how distinctive its clown concept feels, and how well it works on a Halloween watchlist. Some selections are nightmare fuel; others are splatter showcases or deliberately comic horror. Killer Klowns from Outer Space, in particular, is funny and colorful without being entirely comfortable to watch.

1. It (2017)
Best overall scary-clown movie.
Andy Muschietti’s It is the strongest all-purpose recommendation because Pennywise is instantly recognizable, the horror is sustained, and the story gives the scares an emotional foundation. The film follows seven young outcasts in Derry who face an ancient, shape-shifting evil that preys on children and most often appears as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
#1 Best Overall
The sewer, the red balloons, the flooded basement and the idea that a childhood fear can literally hunt you give the film a remarkably durable Halloween atmosphere. Just as important, the Losers’ Club gives the movie warmth and momentum: their friendship is the direct opposite of Pennywise’s predatory isolation.
At 135 minutes, this is a substantial but accessible studio horror film, rated R and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is not necessarily the most frightening movie on this list for every viewer; it is the best balanced choice for a group watch, a first scary-clown film or a Halloween audience with mixed tolerance for gore. The film’s central clown concept also comes from Stephen King’s novel, so readers who want the much larger version of the story can look for the Stephen King It novel after watching.

2. Terrifier 2 (2022)
Best for viewers who want prolonged, explicit splatter.
Art the Clown returns after resurrection and targets a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night. Unlike Pennywise, Art does not need elaborate supernatural speeches or a mythology-heavy explanation. His silent performance, exaggerated gestures and theatrical cruelty are the whole point.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Terrifier 2 is a breakout splatter film rather than restrained supernatural dread. Its kills are prolonged, explicit and designed to test the viewer’s tolerance. The movie’s 138-minute runtime also matters: this is not a quick shock piece, and its length gives Art plenty of room to turn Halloween settings into arenas of sadistic performance.
Content warning: extreme gore, graphic violence and sustained cruelty. Choose this one when the group specifically wants uncompromising splatter—not as a casual background movie for a mixed audience.

3. Terrifier 3 (2024)
Best for the newest major Art the Clown entry.
The third Terrifier feature continues Art’s reign of Halloween-season brutality and belongs near the top of a current scary-clown watchlist because it represents the franchise at its most established and visible. It is the newest major feature in the series, following the character’s rise from underground horror curiosity to one of contemporary splatter’s best-known villains.
Unlike a conventional clown slasher, the Art films make performance itself threatening. The costume, the silent pantomime and the pauses before violence create suspense even when Art is doing something as ordinary as standing in a doorway. The appeal is not subtle dread; it is the anticipation of an escalating set piece.

Those platforms and editions can change by country and date, so verify availability immediately before publication or viewing. Collectors who prefer discs can look for a Terrifier 3 4K UHD + Blu-ray physical copy rather than assuming a particular streaming service will remain available.
Content warning: extreme gore and violence. This is an especially poor choice for viewers who want clown horror without explicit splatter.
Check the official Terrifier 3 site for current release and availability information.
4. Terrifier (2018 release)
Best shorter introduction to Art the Clown.
Damien Leone’s first feature-length Terrifier centers on Art terrorizing three women on Halloween night. At 85 minutes, it is considerably leaner than Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, making it the most efficient entry point for viewers who want to understand why Art became such a prominent modern horror figure.

- Media Format: Blu-ray
- Studio: Universal Studios
- Country of Origin: USA
- Number of discs: 1
The film strips the character down to his most effective elements: black-and-white makeup, a silent stare, vaudevillian gestures and an appetite for increasingly graphic violence. There is little interest in making Art comforting, relatable or conventionally witty. His theatricality is a mask for sadism, and the movie repeatedly turns empty spaces and ordinary Halloween encounters into threats.
Watch this one first if you want the original feature before committing to the longer sequels. Watch Terrifier 2 or Terrifier 3 instead if your priority is a larger, more elaborate splatter spectacle.
Check the film’s current listing and 85-minute runtime.
5. Clown (2016 release)
Best body-horror take on the clown premise.
In Clown, a father puts on a cursed clown costume and discovers that it will not come off. What begins as an attempt to save a child’s birthday party becomes a supernatural transformation, with the costume gradually separating the loving parent from the person he used to be.
That transformation makes this very different from a standard killer-clown slasher. The horror is not simply that a clown is attacking people; it is that an ordinary man is losing control while the costume becomes inseparable from him. The film uses the familiar cheerfulness of children’s entertainment as the surface of a body-horror story.
Jon Watts directed and co-wrote the film, Eli Roth produced it, and the R-rated movie runs approximately 100 minutes. Choose it for physical transformation, cursed-object horror and the uncomfortable question of whether a parent can remain himself while becoming the monster.
6. All Hallows’ Eve (2013)
Best rough-edged precursor for Art the Clown fans.
A babysitter discovers a videotape containing murders while a maniacal clown stalks her and two teenagers on Halloween night. The film is structured as an anthology built around the videotaped segments, which gives it a fragmented, underground quality rather than the polish of a large studio production.
Its biggest importance is historical: All Hallows’ Eve is the feature-film origin point for Art the Clown. Viewers coming from the later Terrifier movies can see the character in an earlier, rougher form and understand how the silent, theatrical killer developed.
At about 83 minutes, it is an easy addition to a late-night double feature, but it should not be sold as interchangeable with the later films. The anthology format and lower-budget texture are part of the experience. Some franchise viewers will value its mythology and character history more than its overall polish.
Content warning: violent videotape sequences and disturbing material.

7. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Best colorful, inventive and campy clown horror.
Teenagers discover murderous extraterrestrials who resemble circus clowns and harvest people with grotesque carnival-themed weapons and traps. The premise is deliberately absurd, but the imagery can still be disturbing: victims are wrapped in cotton-candy cocoons, popcorn guns become weapons and balloon animals turn into threatening creatures.

This is a 90-minute PG-13 science-fiction comedy, not straight nightmare fuel. Its pleasures come from creature design, practical-effects imagination and the contrast between cheerful circus colors and alien predation. The clowns are central threats, but the movie wants the audience to laugh at the invention as much as recoil from it.
BFI places the film within the wider history of clown cinema, where performance can slide into menace and clown imagery can be sad, grotesque or murderous. That makes Killer Klowns a useful choice for a Halloween group with different horror tolerances: it is strange and occasionally unsettling without demanding the endurance required by Terrifier 2.
For a physical-media night, look for a Killer Klowns from Outer Space Blu-ray or DVD, but check the exact edition and regional format before purchasing.
Check the film’s current listing and read BFI’s broader survey of clown cinema.
8. Stitches (2012)
Best balance of gore and jokes.
A children’s-party clown dies after a disastrous prank and returns from the dead to seek revenge at the child’s later birthday party. That setup gives Stitches a clear Halloween-party hook, but the movie plays the material as a black-comedy revenge slasher rather than solemn supernatural horror.
The resurrected party clown is both ridiculous and dangerous. The film’s gore is designed to land alongside punchlines, so the tone is intentionally irreverent. If your ideal Halloween movie alternates between winces and laughter, this is one of the most dependable choices on the list.
Dark Sky Films identifies Conor McMahon as director and lists the film as an 85-minute English-language horror title. It is not the pick for viewers who want dread to remain unbroken; it is the pick for a crowd that appreciates a nasty practical gag followed by an even nastier joke.
Check Dark Sky Films’ information on Stitches.
9. 31 (2016)
Best grimy survival-game option.
Rob Zombie’s 31 follows five carnival workers who are captured and forced to survive twelve hours against a group of murderers dressed as clowns. The setup is less a supernatural clown story than an industrial, survival-game nightmare in which clown imagery is one element of a larger collection of killers.
That distinction matters. If you want a single clown villain dominating the film, choose It or one of the Terrifier movies. If you want a hostile environment, grimy production design and a succession of violent antagonists, 31 offers a harsher alternative. Fangoria specifically highlights the central survival-game premise and Richard Brake’s performance among the clown antagonists.

10. The Last Circus (2010)
Best surreal and psychologically unhinged entry.
Álex de la Iglesia’s Spanish film is a violent, heightened descent into homicidal clown imagery, political tragedy and grotesque spectacle. It does not resemble standard clown horror, and that is precisely why it belongs on a list for viewers who have already worked through the obvious choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Last Circus is not built around a simple sequence of jump scares. Its circus imagery becomes part of a broader nightmare about violence, identity and historical trauma. The tone is surreal, tragic and deliberately excessive, with the clown figures functioning as disturbing symbols as much as conventional villains.
Content warning: surreal violence, disturbing themes and psychologically intense material. Choose it for unusual international cinema, not for a predictable slasher formula.

Captain Spaulding, played by Sid Haig, is one of the most memorable frightening clowns in modern horror, but House of 1000 Corpses is not exclusively a clown movie. The film’s horror comes from a larger backwoods-family nightmare, with Spaulding serving as a major gateway into its filthy, hostile world.
That makes this an important but conditional recommendation. Viewers searching for a movie where the clown dominates every scene should start with It, Terrifier or Clown. Viewers who want exploitation aesthetics, chaotic violence and a clown villain embedded in a much wider ensemble of monsters will find Captain Spaulding difficult to forget.
Its placement is also a reminder that clown horror does not always require a supernatural explanation. Sometimes the makeup is simply the public face of a human being who is already deeply dangerous.

Directed by Billy “Bloody Bill” Pon and featuring Bill Oberst Jr. as Papa Corn, it is a gory independent horror film aimed more squarely at viewers who want something outside the mainstream catalog.
The circus setting gives the movie an appropriately hostile, enclosed atmosphere, while the independent production favors raw brutality over broad accessibility. It is less polished and less universally approachable than the top entries, but that roughness is part of its appeal as a deep cut.
Content warning: extreme gore and violent clown attacks. Save it for a horror-heavy night rather than a casual Halloween gathering.

How to choose the right scary-clown movie
- Want the best first watch? Choose It (2017). It has the clearest emotional story, the most recognizable clown villain and the broadest Halloween appeal.
- Want the most extreme gore? Choose Terrifier 2 or Terrifier 3. Start with Terrifier if you want a shorter introduction to Art.
- Want body horror rather than a slasher? Choose Clown.
- Want Art the Clown’s beginnings? Watch All Hallows’ Eve, then continue with the feature-length Terrifier films.
- Want something funny and colorful? Choose Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Stitches.
- Want a grimy survival nightmare? Choose 31.
- Want something bizarre and international? Choose The Last Circus.
- Want an independent deep cut? Choose Circus of the Dead.
Suggested Halloween double features
- Accessible to extreme: It followed by Terrifier. The first establishes the supernatural clown tradition; the second shows how far silent-clown splatter can go.
- Comedy and horror: Killer Klowns from Outer Space followed by Stitches. Both use jokes, but Stitches pushes much harder into gore.
- Art the Clown chronology: All Hallows’ Eve, Terrifier, Terrifier 2, then Terrifier 3. Expect a steadily larger commitment to explicit violence.
- Unusual cinema: The Last Circus followed by House of 1000 Corpses. Neither is a straightforward clown slasher, and both use clown imagery within a much larger grotesque world.
Where to watch these movies
Streaming, rental and digital-purchase catalogs vary by country and can change without notice. A fixed “where to watch” table would become unreliable quickly, so check the linked distributor or film pages—and your local services—immediately before planning a watchlist. The official Terrifier 3 site currently identifies digital stores, Screambox and several physical editions, while Shudder’s listing identifies All Hallows’ Eve; neither should be treated as a permanent availability guarantee.
For physical media, confirm region, disc format and edition details before ordering. This is particularly important for collector releases such as the Terrifier 3 4K UHD/Blu-ray editions and older cult titles that may have multiple releases.
