NYT Connections #559, released December 21, 2024, can be solved by finding groups for loops, cooking vessels, kinds of beds, and things associated with “Oscar.” Use the hints below before revealing the full answer.

NYT Connections #559 was published on Saturday, December 21, 2024. The solution divides the 16 words into four groups: loops, cooking vessels, kinds of beds, and things associated with “Oscar.”

Because December 21 has had other Connections puzzles in different years, this page is specifically for game #559 from 2024.

  • Yellow: Think of a shape or object that goes around and returns to itself.
  • Green: These are items that can be used to contain or cook food.
  • Blue: Think of different styles or types of beds.
  • Purple: Each word can be associated with the name “Oscar,” although not in the same way.

Stronger hint: The four groups involve loops, cooking vessels, beds, and things called Oscar.

NYT Connections #559 answers for December 21, 2024

Category Words
LOOP BAND, CIRCLE, HOOP, RING
COOKING VESSELS CASSEROLE, CROCK, PAN, POT
KINDS OF BEDS BUNK, CANOPY, MURPHY, SLEIGH
THINGS CALLED “OSCAR” BALONEY, GROUCH, O, STATUETTE

Why each group works

Yellow: LOOP

BAND, CIRCLE, HOOP, and RING can all describe a loop or circular form. A band can be a strip or ring of material, while a circle, hoop, and ring are more direct references to circular shapes or objects.

This group contains one of the puzzle’s early distractions. BAND can suggest a musical group, and RING can suggest jewelry or a sound. Their circular meanings become clearer when CIRCLE and HOOP appear beside them.

Green: COOKING VESSELS

CASSEROLE, CROCK, PAN, and POT are vessels used to prepare or cook food.

CASSEROLE can refer both to a prepared dish and the oven-safe dish used to make it. A CROCK is a cooking or storage vessel and also points toward a crockpot. A pan and a pot are familiar cooking vessels, although POT can also lead players toward unrelated meanings such as plants.

Blue: KINDS OF BEDS

BUNK, CANOPY, MURPHY, and SLEIGH all complete established bed terms:

  • bunk bed
  • canopy bed
  • Murphy bed
  • sleigh bed

MURPHY is the key anchor in this group. On its own, it may look like a person’s surname, but “Murphy bed” is a widely recognized type of bed that folds into a wall or cabinet. “Sleigh” is another deliberate distraction because it can evoke the Christmas season, especially for a puzzle published shortly before Christmas.

Purple: THINGS CALLED “OSCAR”

BALONEY, GROUCH, O, and STATUETTE connect to “Oscar” through four different references:

  • BALONEY: Oscar Mayer is associated with baloney and other processed-meat products.
  • GROUCH: Oscar the Grouch is the Sesame Street character.
  • O: In the NATO phonetic alphabet, the letter O is represented by “Oscar.”
  • STATUETTE: The Academy Award is commonly called an Oscar, and its trophy is a statuette.

This is the hardest category because the connections are not grammatically identical. “Oscar” is a brand reference for baloney, a character’s name for Grouch, a phonetic-code word for O, and a nickname for an award represented by a statuette. The category is easier to confirm after the other three groups have been removed.

How to solve the puzzle logically

  1. Start with the most concrete visual relationship. CIRCLE, HOOP, and RING immediately suggest circular forms. BAND is the fourth word that completes the loop group.
  2. Look for kitchen vocabulary. CASSEROLE, CROCK, PAN, and POT form a coherent set of cooking vessels.
  3. Use phrase completion. BUNK, CANOPY, MURPHY, and SLEIGH all become types of beds when followed by “bed.”
  4. Reserve the broadest category for last. BALONEY, GROUCH, O, and STATUETTE look unrelated until “Oscar” is treated as a brand, character, phonetic word, and award name.

The puzzle’s misdirection comes from words with several plausible meanings. BAND can suggest music, POT can suggest gardening or cannabis, SLEIGH can suggest Christmas, and O can look like a circle. Connections is built around exactly this kind of overlap: a word may appear to fit more than one theme, but only one arrangement uses all 16 words in four complete groups of four.
