Virtue and Moir first teamed up in ice dance in 1997, when Virtue was seven and Moir was nine. At some point during childhood, they also had a brief dating experience. But the public record does not support the frequently repeated claim that Virtue and Moir secretly dated as adults, had an affair or were romantically involved during their marriages.

Did Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir date as children?
Yes—but their own account makes clear that this was a childhood relationship, not evidence of a later adult romance.
During a 2018 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Moir said that he and Virtue had dated for a short period when they were young. Virtue described the arrangement as something facilitated by their families. Moir characterized it as an approximately eight-month childhood romance in which they barely communicated.
That distinction matters. “They dated as children” is a supported fact. “They were secretly in love for decades” is an interpretation that goes beyond what they have publicly confirmed. Virtue and Moir’s skating was designed to communicate intimacy. Ice dance is built around connection, musical interpretation, character and narrative, and their programs often asked audiences to believe that the two skaters were lovers, soulmates or characters in the middle of a dramatic relationship.
The clearest example was their 2018 Olympic free dance, which used music from Moulin Rouge!. The program portrayed Christian and Satine, the doomed lovers at the center of the film. Their close embraces, eye contact, lifts and carefully controlled physical contact were not accidental glimpses into their private lives; they were part of the performance’s theatrical language.
That performance nevertheless felt unusually convincing because Virtue and Moir had spent decades learning one another’s timing, movement and reactions. Their ability to anticipate each other on the ice created an intimacy that can look almost indistinguishable from romantic chemistry to an audience.
After their 2018 Olympic victory, Virtue explained that the chemistry viewers noticed reflected their commitment to the characters and the story they were telling. As Time reported, she treated the audience’s romantic interpretation as a compliment to the performance—not as confirmation that she and Moir were privately dating.

What did they say about whether they were dating?
The clearest direct answer came in that 2018 television interview. Virtue joked that if she and Moir were dating, they would announce it on the show. They then explained that they had dated as children but had put that relationship aside so they could protect and develop their skating partnership.
In other interviews, they described their connection as “complicated,” “unique” and unlike a conventional romantic or sibling relationship. Those descriptions help explain why outsiders found their bond difficult to categorize. They were not ordinary coworkers: they began as children, spent formative years training together, depended on each other under intense pressure and used romantic narratives to win medals.
But language about a relationship being unique or emotionally complicated is not the same as an admission of an adult romance. The available evidence supports a powerful creative partnership, not a verified secret love story.
How long did they skate together?
Virtue and Moir partnered from 1997 until their retirement from competitive skating in 2019. Their career included:
- Three Olympic appearances: 2010, 2014 and 2018.
- Five Olympic medals in total.
- Olympic gold in both 2010 and 2018.
- A historic place as the first North American ice-dance team to win Olympic gold.
- A 24-year competitive partnership that began when they were children.
The length and success of that partnership naturally encouraged fans to see it as a love story. In a sense, it was a lifelong story—but “lifelong partnership” does not automatically mean “lifelong romance.” Their shared achievement was professional, artistic and deeply personal without needing to be romantic.

Tessa Virtue married Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly. In a 2024 exclusive with HELLO!, Virtue confirmed that the couple held two private wedding celebrations—one in Toronto and another in Tuscany. She described marriage as a meaningful partnership and spoke about the two of them becoming the best partners they could be for each other.
Scott Moir and Jackie Mascarin
Scott Moir publicly announced his engagement to Jackie Mascarin in August 2019. Global News reported that Mascarin was a childhood skating partner and quoted Moir distinguishing her role from Virtue’s: Mascarin was the partner chosen for him by his aunt, while Virtue became his long-term skating partner on the ice. Later reporting describes Moir as married to Mascarin.

These marriages do not make Virtue and Moir’s history insignificant. They do, however, make it especially irresponsible to present unsupported affair or secret-romance theories as fact.

What does their post-retirement relationship look like?
Retirement changed the structure of their relationship. They no longer spend their lives preparing for the next competition, but both continue to speak about what the partnership taught them and how much it shaped their lives.
In a February 2026 Canadian Press interview, Virtue and Moir reflected on life after skating. The report described their post-retirement connection in terms of gratitude and reconnection. Moir said that 24 years of skating together created a special relationship and that they had become more grateful for it after stepping away from competition. Virtue discussed her work in business and high-performance advising, while Moir pursued coaching. The Canadian Press interview is reproduced by the Brandon Sun.
A February 9, 2026 episode of Skate Ontario’s In the Loop podcast also focused on Moir’s career, coaching and the lessons behind his partnership with Virtue. Subsequent reporting quoted him saying that he spent “way too long” talking about Tessa on his wedding day. That comment shows how consequential Virtue has been in his life and how much history they share. It does not, by itself, establish that they were secretly romantic.
People can be emotionally important to one another without being spouses or lovers. In Virtue and Moir’s case, years of shared ambition, sacrifice and public success provide a sufficient explanation for the depth of their bond.

Several elements combine to make the speculation unusually persistent:
- They began together as children. Their relationship contains a real childhood dating story, which gives later rumors a factual starting point.
- They spent more than two decades together. Training, traveling and competing as a pair created a shared life few other partnerships can match.
- Their skating required romantic storytelling. Programs such as Moulin Rouge! asked them to portray love with extraordinary conviction.
- They have never described the bond in simple terms. Words such as “unique” and “complicated” invite curiosity, even when they are not romantic disclosures.
- They remain publicly affectionate and respectful. Warmth and gratitude can be misread as evidence of hidden romance, particularly when the audience already wants a particular story to be true.
The temptation is to treat emotional intensity as proof of sexual or romantic intimacy. That is a mistake. Their chemistry was real; the leap from chemistry to an adult relationship is not supported by the evidence cited here.

They publicly denied that they were dating in 2018, and both later married other people.
