Liz, born July 28, 1966, is the elder daughter and a former Wyoming congresswoman who later became a prominent critic of Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election. Mary, born March 14, 1969, worked in corporate and presidential campaign advising, including senior roles on the Bush-Cheney campaigns.
The sisters have followed different public paths. Liz’s career has centered on law, diplomacy, elected office, and constitutional questions; Mary’s has focused on political operations, advising, and writing about life inside a powerful political family.
Who are Dick Cheney’s daughters?
Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney’s two children are:
| Daughter | Born | Known publicly for |
|---|---|---|
| Liz Cheney | July 28, 1966 | Law, diplomacy, service in the U.S. House, and work on the January 6 committee |
| Mary Cheney | March 14, 1969 | Corporate and political advising, Bush-Cheney campaign work, and a memoir |
Both daughters have been involved in politics, but they have not held interchangeable roles. Liz became an elected official and congressional leader. Mary worked primarily behind the scenes as a campaign and corporate adviser and later wrote about her experience as a political insider and member of the Cheney family.

Before running for Congress, Cheney worked in government and international policy. Her experience included work at the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department. She later served as deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs. The U.S. House Historical Office biography provides an official overview of her education and government career.
Time in the U.S. House
Cheney represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district in the U.S. House from 2017 through 2023. She served as chair of the House Republican Conference from 2019 to 2021, making her one of the highest-ranking Republican women in Congress at the time. Her official Congress.gov member record lists her congressional service as 2017–2023.
Cheney became especially prominent after the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. She served as vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the attack and was one of the most visible Republican critics of Donald Trump’s claims that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen. She lost the 2022 Republican primary for Wyoming’s House seat and left Congress in January 2023.
It is important not to describe Liz Cheney as a current representative: official congressional records show that her House service ended in 2023.
What does Liz Cheney do now?
After leaving Congress, Cheney accepted an appointment as a professor of practice at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. According to the University of Virginia announcement, her work includes lectures, seminars, research, and civic-education activities.

Her current public profile is therefore best described as that of a former representative, author, educator, and national political figure—not a sitting member of Congress.
Liz Cheney’s husband and children
Liz Cheney is married to attorney Philip Perry. Simon & Schuster’s author biography says they have five children. Public sources identify the children as Kate, Elizabeth, Grace, Philip Richard, and Richard Perry.
Because the children are private individuals, there is little reason to add personal details about them beyond the family relationship.
Liz Cheney’s books
Liz Cheney has written about her political career and has also collaborated with her father. In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir is presented by its publisher as Dick Cheney’s memoir, written with Liz Cheney. It covers his life as a family man, policymaker, businessman, and politician.
Liz later wrote Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning, which focuses on her congressional career and the political crisis surrounding January 6. That book is more directly about her own public life than about the Cheney family.
Mary Cheney
Campaign and political career
Mary Claire Cheney is Dick and Lynne Cheney’s younger daughter. Georgetown’s Institute of Politics and Public Service describes her as a corporate and political adviser with more than two decades of experience.
She joined the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2000 as a special assistant to the vice-presidential nominee. During the 2004 reelection campaign, she served as director of vice-presidential operations. In that position, she worked on messaging, events, staffing, scheduling, and related campaign operations.

Unlike her sister, Mary did not build her public career through elected office. Her work was largely conducted within campaigns and advisory settings, although her family connection and public role made her a recurring subject of political coverage. Georgetown’s profile of Mary Cheney outlines this campaign background.
Mary Cheney, Heather Poe, and public attention
Mary Cheney’s public story has also been connected to LGBTQ+ visibility and the politics of the Bush-Cheney campaigns. She has discussed coming out to her parents and her relationship with Heather Poe. During the 2004 campaign, Mary’s sexual orientation became part of political and media debate, creating tensions around how her family’s political positions were discussed publicly.
That episode is best understood as one part of Mary Cheney’s biography, not as its entire definition. She was also a campaign professional, corporate adviser, author, and member of a politically prominent family. ABC News’ account discusses her experience and the attention surrounding the 2004 campaign.
Mary Cheney is married to Heather Poe. Public reporting and publisher material identify them as parents of two children. Additional personal information about the children is not necessary to answer who Dick Cheney’s daughters are and is appropriately kept private.

Mary wrote Now It’s My Turn: A Daughter’s Chronicle of Political Life. Published by Threshold Editions, the trade paperback edition listed by the publisher is dated March 14, 2008.
The memoir describes life inside the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns, her relationship with her parents, media attention, and the unusual position of being both a family member and a campaign insider. For readers interested specifically in Mary’s perspective, it is the most direct first-person account associated with her public life.
How are Liz Cheney and Mary Cheney different?
| Liz Cheney | Mary Cheney | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary public role | Lawyer, diplomat, elected official, and political author | Campaign and corporate adviser, campaign operator, and author |
| Government position | Former U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large district, 2017–2023 | No elected federal office identified in the supplied public biographies |
| Political focus | Congressional policy, Republican leadership, and constitutional issues | Campaign operations, messaging, advising, and political memoir |

The Cheney family after Dick Cheney’s death
Dick Cheney died on November 3, 2025, at age 84, according to family and news reports. The family statement said that Lynne Cheney, Liz Cheney, Mary Cheney, and other relatives were with him when he died from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
His death brought both daughters into renewed public coverage. Official service materials for the Washington National Cathedral listed Liz and Mary among the immediate family and identified Liz, Mary, and Philip Perry in the service program. The CBS News report and Associated Press coverage provide context about his death and the family’s public appearance.
That later coverage clarifies the family relationship, but it does not change the basic answer: Dick Cheney had two daughters, Liz and Mary, whose careers developed along notably different political and professional lines.
