The first look: teaser and official trailer
Warner Bros.’ first major public look at the sequel arrived with an official teaser trailer in April 2024. The full official trailer followed on July 23, 2024. The campaign immediately established three central elements: Joaquin Phoenix’s return as Arthur Fleck, Lady Gaga’s introduction as Lee Quinzel, and the film’s musical dimension.
The official trailer begins from the confirmed premise that Arthur is institutionalized at Arkham and awaiting trial for the crimes committed as Joker. It also introduces his encounter with Lee and previews the idea that music is not merely background decoration but part of Arthur’s inner life. The trailer’s singing performances made the musical format impossible to miss, although the early campaign sometimes described the film more cautiously than simply calling it a traditional musical.
Those trailers are a useful first look at the film’s tone, but they should not be treated as confirmation of every fan theory or later plot interpretation. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis intentionally keeps the story’s later developments vague.

What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?
Joker: Folie à Deux takes place after the events of Joker. Arthur Fleck is being held at Arkham while he awaits trial for his crimes as Joker. He remains caught between Arthur and the Joker identity, and that divided sense of self shapes the sequel’s central conflict.
At Arkham, Arthur meets Lee Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga. The official premise describes their relationship as a meeting between two people drawn together by a shared madness. The story also connects Arthur’s psychological state to music, with the official marketing describing him as discovering or encountering “the music that’s always been inside him.”
That is the spoiler-free version of the setup. It confirms the Arkham institution, the trial, Arthur’s identity struggle, Lee’s arrival, and the romantic connection between them without presenting trailer speculation or later plot turns as established facts.
Cast and characters
- Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker: Phoenix returns in the role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2019 film.
- Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel/Harley Quinn: Gaga joins the franchise as Arthur’s romantic counterpart. Warner Bros. also credits her as a music consultant, reflecting the sequel’s unusually important musical component.
- Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond: Beetz reprises her role from the first film.
- Brendan Gleeson as Jackie Sullivan: Gleeson joins the supporting cast in a new role.
- Catherine Keener as Maryanne Stewart: Keener also appears in a supporting role.
The sequel’s casting makes it more than a simple continuation built around Phoenix alone. Gaga’s Lee is central to the film’s premise and marketing, while Beetz is the principal returning supporting performer identified in the official cast information.

Why is Joker 2 a musical?
The short answer is that music is built into the film’s storytelling rather than added as a minor stylistic flourish. The official synopsis says Arthur encounters the music within him, and both the teaser and full trailer show Phoenix and Gaga singing. Rotten Tomatoes classifies the film as Musical, Crime, Drama, Mystery & Thriller.
It is still more precise to call the film a musical-inflected crime drama than to assume it follows the conventions of a conventional song-and-dance studio musical. The marketing emphasized the musical material while leaving room for the film’s psychological, criminal, courtroom, and character-driven elements.
There are also two separate musical releases associated with the film:
- The motion-picture soundtrack: Interscope Records listed the official Joker: Folie à Deux soundtrack on vinyl and CD. This is the album associated with the film’s vocal and musical performances.
- The original score: WaterTower Music released composer Hildur Guðnadóttir’s separate 19-track score on September 9, 2024. The official WaterTower Music score page identifies that release.
Those terms should not be used interchangeably. The soundtrack album and Guðnadóttir’s score are different products serving different parts of the film’s audio identity. Gaga’s credit as music consultant further distinguishes the sequel’s musical production from a standard orchestral score.

Todd Phillips returned as director, writer, and producer. He co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, who also co-wrote the first Joker. The producing team included Phillips, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and Joseph Garner.
Several major creative collaborators also returned:
- Lawrence Sher: cinematographer
- Mark Friedberg: production designer
- Jeff Groth: editor
- Hildur Guðnadóttir: composer
Arianne Phillips joined the production as costume designer. The combination of returning creative leads and a new costume-design contribution gave the sequel continuity with the visual world of the 2019 film while supporting its expanded musical and performance elements.

Digital purchase and rental availability can vary by country, retailer, and date, so a reader should check the local listings reached through the official movie site rather than assuming that a particular subscription streaming service carries the film. The supplied official information confirms digital availability but does not establish a universal subscription-streaming home for every region.
Physical home-entertainment formats reported for the film include 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. A reported home-media date for those editions was December 17, 2024, while the official site confirms that the disc editions are available. For a compatible 4K setup, the Joker: Folie à Deux 4K UHD Blu-ray is the format to look for; viewers who do not need 4K can choose the Joker: Folie à Deux Blu-ray. Check the retailer listing for region compatibility, player requirements, included discs, price, and current stock before buying.
The soundtrack is a separate collecting option. Readers interested in the film’s songs and musical performances can look for the Joker: Folie à Deux soundtrack vinyl or CD, while listeners who want the atmospheric instrumental music should look for Guðnadóttir’s original score instead.
Runtime, rating and reception
The film is rated R and runs for 2 hours and 18 minutes. The rating and length make it a substantial, adult-oriented theatrical sequel rather than a short comic-book adventure.
Its critical reception was considerably weaker than the first Joker‘s. The Rotten Tomatoes page used for this guide lists a 31% Tomatometer score from 373 reviews and a 31% Popcornmeter score from more than 5,000 verified ratings. Those are live platform aggregates and can change as reviews and verified audience ratings are added or recalculated, so they should be treated as a snapshot rather than a permanent measurement.
The critical response is best described as broadly negative but not unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus highlights Phoenix’s Joker taking the stand and Gaga’s energy while arguing that the story is comparatively static. That captures the central divide in the response: some viewers valued the performances, music, and deliberate departure from the first film, while others found the sequel less dramatically effective.
Box-office performance
Box Office Mojo lists approximately $58.3 million domestically, $149.2 million internationally, and $207.5 million worldwide. These figures are database totals rather than studio-reported numbers, and box-office databases can revise historical figures.
The numbers provide useful context for the film’s reception: Folie à Deux had the profile of a major Warner Bros. release, but its theatrical performance was far less powerful than the cultural and commercial impact of the 2019 original.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Joker: Folie à Deux connected to the wider DC Universe?
The safest description is that it is a sequel to 2019’s Joker based on DC characters, not that it belongs to the current shared DC Studios continuity. Warner Bros.’ official material presents it as a follow-up to Phillips’ film and does not frame it as a direct continuation of the broader connected superhero universe.
That distinction matters because “DC” can refer either to the characters and company behind a film or to a shared continuity. Nothing in the supplied official information establishes Folie à Deux as part of the current DCU, so it should be approached as the continuation of Arthur Fleck’s separate, self-contained story.

What is still unknown?
Because the film has already been released, the old pre-release questions about a future launch date and an upcoming first look no longer apply. Confirmed information now includes the release history, cast, filmmakers, Arkham-and-trial premise, musical classification, home-media availability, soundtrack releases, reception, and box-office results.
No reliable current source in the available research establishes another Joker sequel or a new release date beyond Joker: Folie à Deux. Claims about a third film, a crossover with other DC movies, or an unannounced continuation should therefore be treated as speculation unless Warner Bros. or another authoritative source confirms them.
