Deputies were reportedly dispatched at about 11:28 a.m. on November 8, 2025, after a 911 call concerning a man who was allegedly acting erratically and had a knife. The sheriff’s account, as reported by news outlets, said Duarte made threats, attempted to assault fire and emergency-medical personnel, and then charged toward a responding female deputy after being given multiple verbal commands to get on the ground.
The deputy fired two rounds, striking Duarte. Emergency personnel treated him at the scene before he was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was later pronounced dead. These details come from the law-enforcement account and should not be treated as an independently established reconstruction of the encounter. The publicly reviewed reporting did not include publicly available body-camera footage or a completed criminal proceeding establishing every detail.

What was Michael Duarte’s official cause of death?
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office told Us Weekly in December 2025 that Duarte died from a gunshot wound and classified the manner of death as homicide. Us Weekly’s report on the medical-examiner finding noted that this designation does not necessarily mean the death resulted from a criminal act.
Later reporting on the full autopsy said Duarte sustained two gunshot wounds: one to the left chest and another below the chest. That report also said toxicology found no alcohol or drugs in his system at the time of death. The autopsy details were reported by People and relayed in later coverage; the underlying autopsy document was not among the publicly reviewed sources.
What does “homicide” mean on a medical examiner’s report?
In death-investigation terminology, “homicide” describes the manner of death—the fact that the fatal injury was inflicted by another person. It is not the same as a criminal conviction, a finding of unlawful killing, or a conclusion that a particular person should be prosecuted.

In Duarte’s case, the classification is consistent with the medical finding that he died from gunshot wounds fired by another person. Whether the deputy’s use of force was lawful, justified, or criminal is a separate question for investigators and prosecutors. The medical-examiner classification alone does not answer it.
Why were early reports unclear about the cause of death?
When Duarte’s death was first announced, his family and talent agency described it as a “horrible incident” but did not publicly identify the cause. Early entertainment reports therefore said that the cause of death was not immediately available. That early coverage preceded the later reporting about the police shooting and the medical examiner’s findings.
As a result, descriptions such as “tragic accident” should not be presented as the final official explanation. The later medical information identified gunshot wounds as the cause of death and homicide as the manner of death.

What remains unknown about the shooting?
Several important parts of the encounter had not been independently verified in the reporting reviewed:
- The complete sequence of events before the deputy fired.
- The precise distance between Duarte and the deputy.
- The exact wording and timing of commands.
- Whether the encounter was captured on body-camera video and, if so, what that footage shows.
- Whether the deputy’s actions will result in criminal charges or another formal disposition.
Reporting available by August 12, 2026, said the Texas Rangers were investigating the deputy-involved shooting. The responding deputy’s identity had not been publicly released in the reviewed reports. Those reports also said that body-camera footage had been requested, while the Medina County Sheriff’s Office sought to withhold it during the open investigation. Later coverage said the Texas Attorney General’s Office ruled that the footage did not have to be released at that stage. Who was Michael Duarte, also known as FoodWithBearHands?
Duarte was a California-based food creator whose online identity, FoodWithBearHands, centered on grilling, barbecue, recipes, and food videos.
