How to Fix Disney+ Autoplay Not Working

Disney+ autoplay is controlled per profile. Learn the correct setting path, how to diagnose Next Episode failures, and what to do on phones, TVs, browsers, and consoles.

If Disney+ stops after an episode instead of starting the next one, first check the setting on the specific profile being used: open the profile menu, choose Edit Profile, select the affected profile, turn Autoplay on, and select Save. Then play an episode and let it reach the end without leaving the player.

Disney+ autoplay is controlled per profile, not necessarily for the whole account. If it is already enabled, turn it off, save, turn it back on, save again, and test it. Disney documents the profile setting and edit path; the off-and-on sequence is a practical settings refresh rather than a separately published Disney instruction.

First, confirm that this is an autoplay problem

During playback, Disney+ provides a Next Episode control. On mobile devices it appears at the bottom of the screen; on desktop browsers and TV-connected devices it appears on either side of the Play button. Try selecting it manually.

  • Manual Next Episode works, but automatic playback does not: the likely problem is the profile’s Autoplay state or the app/device’s handling of that setting.
  • Next Episode is unavailable, playback stops, or the player shows an error: troubleshoot the app, browser, device, or network rather than treating this as an autoplay-only problem.

Test at least two episodes from different series. If only one title fails, that title may have a metadata or playback problem. If every series fails, the profile, app, browser, device, or connection becomes more likely.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Also make sure you are not confusing ordinary series autoplay with Disney+’s separate Streams feature, which provides continuous programming with different playback behavior.

1. Turn on Autoplay for the affected profile

  1. Open Disney+ in a supported web browser or the Disney+ mobile app.
  2. Open the profile selector.
  3. Select Edit Profile.
  4. Choose the profile where autoplay is failing.
  5. Turn Autoplay on.
  6. Select Save.
  7. Start an episode and let it play to the end.

Use the profile that is actually watching. Changing Autoplay on one profile does not necessarily change it for other profiles on the account. Disney’s profile instructions cover the setting and explain that profile controls can be managed from a supported browser or mobile app. Menu placement can vary by device and territory.

If Autoplay is already on

Use this settings-refresh sequence:

  1. Open the affected profile’s editing screen.
  2. Turn Autoplay off and select Save.
  3. Return to the same profile settings.
  4. Turn Autoplay back on and select Save again.
  5. Close and reopen Disney+, then test more than one episode.

This can refresh a profile setting that has not been applied correctly, but it is a troubleshooting tactic—not a Disney-mandated procedure.

Check Junior Mode

Disney+’s profile controls include Autoplay, Background Video, content rating, Profile PIN, and Junior Mode. According to Disney’s parental-control documentation, autoplay is disabled by default in Junior Mode. If the control is missing or repeatedly returns to an off state on a child profile, check whether Junior Mode is enabled before assuming the app is defective. See Disney’s parental-control guidance.

2. Fully close and reopen Disney+

Close the Disney+ app completely rather than merely returning to the device’s home screen. On a computer, close the Disney+ tab or browser and reopen it. Sign in again if necessary, play an episode, and allow it to finish.

Disney recommends closing and reopening the app or website as part of troubleshooting for playback problems. This is particularly worthwhile after changing a profile setting, because the TV or streaming device may still be using an older profile state.

3. Update Disney+, your browser, and the device

Outdated software can cause playback and compatibility problems. Check all of the following:

  • Update the Disney+ app through the device’s app store.
  • Install available operating-system updates for the phone, tablet, smart TV, streaming stick, console, or set-top box.
  • On a computer, use a current supported browser.

Disney’s current US browser requirements list the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera on Windows 10 or newer; on macOS 11 or newer, Disney lists current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari versions; and on ChromeOS it lists the latest Chrome version. Requirements and availability can vary by country, so check Disney’s current computer and browser requirements if you are using a different operating system or territory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Confirm that your device is supported

Disney+ supports web browsers, mobile devices and tablets, smart TVs, streaming sticks, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes, but support varies by model and territory. An older or unusual TV-connected device may play the current episode but fail when it tries to load the next one.

Check Disney’s supported devices list. Then test the same profile and series on a supported phone or computer browser. The result helps isolate the fault:

  • Autoplay works on the phone or browser but not the TV: focus on the TV app, device software, cache, or device compatibility.
  • Autoplay fails everywhere: focus on the profile setting, account state, service-side playback behavior, or connection.

If your current TV-connected hardware is unsupported or consistently produces playback errors after the software steps, a supported Disney+ streaming device may be a reasonable conditional replacement—not a guaranteed autoplay fix.

5. Clear Disney+ cache and data

Damaged temporary data can make an app unstable or prevent it from loading the next episode correctly. The exact menu differs by platform:

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
  • Android phones and tablets, Android TV, and Fire TV: use the device’s Disney+ app settings to clear cache; where available, clear app data as well. Clearing data usually signs you out.
  • Apple TV: Disney recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the app rather than using a conventional cache-clear menu.
  • Game consoles and other platforms: follow the platform-specific instructions in Disney’s cache and data guidance.
  • Computer browser: clear the browser’s cache and cookies. Disney warns that you will need to sign in again afterward.

After clearing data, reopen Disney+, sign in, select the correct profile, and retest two episodes.

6. Restart the device and your network

Power-cycle the equipment in this order:

  1. Turn off the phone, computer, TV, streaming stick, console, or set-top box.
  2. Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
  3. Restart the modem and router and wait for them to reconnect.
  4. Restart the streaming device.
  5. Open Disney+ and test again.

Disney identifies factors such as the distance from the router, the number of connected devices, provider outages, and unusually high simultaneous usage as possible contributors to streaming trouble. Autoplay needs Disney+ to request and begin the next episode after the current one, so an unstable connection can appear as an autoplay failure even when the first episode plays normally. That connection between network instability and autoplay is a technical inference, not a Disney statement that every autoplay problem is network-related.

If other streaming services also buffer or stop, investigate the home network. If every other service works and Disney+ fails only on one device, the Disney+ app or device is more likely to be responsible.

7. Check browser extensions, cookies, and JavaScript

If the problem occurs only in a desktop browser, temporarily test Disney+ with browser interference removed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Disable ad blockers, content filters, antivirus web protection, proxy accelerators, and similar extensions.
  • Confirm that JavaScript and cookies are enabled.
  • Try a private or incognito window as a diagnostic test.
  • Try another supported browser.

Disney lists third-party applications and browser settings among possible causes of blank, black, or failed playback. An incognito window can change extension and stored-session behavior, so use it to identify the cause rather than as a permanent fix. If autoplay works there, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. Disney’s screen and spinning-player troubleshooting includes related browser checks.

8. Reinstall the Disney+ app

On a phone, TV, streaming stick, console, or other app-based device, uninstall Disney+ and install it again from the platform’s official app store. Reinstallation ensures that the latest available app package is downloaded, but it may sign you out and remove locally stored app data.

  4. Select the affected profile.
  5. Confirm Autoplay is on.
  6. Test several episodes.

Disney includes reinstalling among its recommended steps for persistent streaming problems. See its streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Device-specific troubleshooting order

Device Recommended order
Phone or tablet Verify Autoplay in the mobile app or a supported browser; force-close Disney+; update the app; restart the device; clear cache or app data if the operating system provides that option; reinstall if necessary.
Smart TV or streaming stick Change the profile setting in the mobile app or browser if the TV interface does not show it; restart Disney+ and the device; update the app and device software; check support; reinstall if there is no cache-clear option.
Computer browser Confirm the operating system and browser meet Disney’s requirements; enable JavaScript and cookies; clear cache and cookies; temporarily disable extensions and content filters; test another supported browser.
Game console Restart Disney+ and the console; install app and system updates; clear saved app data if the platform supports it; reinstall the app if needed; test on another supported device.

For platform-specific cache instructions, consult Disney’s device cache article. For supported hardware, use Disney’s device compatibility list.

When replacing hardware is worth considering

Do not buy a cable, router, or streaming device as the first response to an autoplay problem. First verify the profile setting, update software, restart the equipment, clear temporary data, and test another supported device.

Hardware becomes a reasonable consideration only when:

  • the current TV or streaming stick is unsupported, outdated, or repeatedly reports playback errors;
  • Disney+ works correctly on a phone or computer but not on that TV-connected device;
  • other apps also show device-specific playback problems; or
  • the device cannot receive the required app or operating-system updates.

In that situation, compare a supported Disney+ streaming device against Disney’s compatibility list before buying. Compatibility may improve reliability, but no retail device is a guaranteed cure for a profile-setting or Disney+ service issue.

What not to change first

  • Your subscription plan: the research does not support changing plans as a fix for autoplay.
  • HDMI cables: HDMI and HDCP checks are relevant to broader display, 4K, HDR, or playback-component problems, not established as a universal autoplay remedy.
  • A VPN: there is no evidence here that changing VPN settings is a standard autoplay fix.
  • PC cleaning or optimization software: native browser steps—clearing cache and cookies, enabling JavaScript, and disabling interfering extensions—are the supported troubleshooting path.

If a TV has a blank screen, picture loss, 4K/HDR problems, or an HDCP error, investigate the HDMI connection separately. Do not assume that replacing the cable will repair ordinary series autoplay.

When to contact Disney+ support

Contact Disney+ if Autoplay is enabled and saved for the correct profile, the problem occurs across multiple titles and supported devices, and the app, browser, device, and network steps have not helped. Disney’s streaming support page directs users to live phone or chat assistance when troubleshooting fails and states that assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; availability and contact options can vary by region.

Before contacting support, collect:

  • the profile name or profile type;
  • the device make and model;
  • the operating-system version;
  • the Disney+ app version or browser name and version;
  • the affected series and episodes;
  • whether the manual Next Episode control works;
  • any exact error message or code; and
  • the troubleshooting steps already completed.

This information is not presented as a Disney requirement, but it can reduce repeated troubleshooting. Start with Disney’s streaming issues support page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Disney+ play the current episode but not start the next one?

The profile’s Autoplay setting may be off or not properly applied, or the app may be unable to load the next episode because of outdated software, corrupted temporary data, device compatibility, browser interference, or an unstable connection. First verify Autoplay on the specific profile, then test another title and device.

Why can’t I find the Autoplay setting on my TV?

Disney+ does not expose every profile control in every TV interface. Open Disney+ on a supported browser or in the mobile app, choose Edit Profile, select the affected profile, enable Autoplay, save, and return to the TV app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Disney+ Autoplay work on every profile?

Autoplay is profile-specific. A change made on one profile does not necessarily affect the others. Junior Mode is a special case: Disney’s parental-control documentation says autoplay is disabled by default for Junior Mode profiles.

Is Disney+ autoplay different from Next Episode?

Yes. Next Episode is the player control that lets you start the following episode manually. If it works but autoplay does not, the issue is more narrowly related to the profile setting or the app/device implementation. If it is unavailable or playback fails, use broader streaming troubleshooting.

Will buying an HDMI cable or router fix Disney+ autoplay?

Not necessarily. Disney’s guidance supports checking connections, compatibility, software, cache, browser settings, and third-party tools, but it does not identify a particular cable or networking product as a universal autoplay fix.

The Bottom Line

The highest-probability fix is to enable Autoplay under Edit Profile for the profile actually being used, save it, and restart Disney+. If that fails, test another title and device, update the software, clear cache or cookies, check browser interference and network stability, and reinstall the app. Escalate to Disney+ support when the failure persists across supported devices and multiple titles.
