For U.S. viewers, Tubi is the main destination for the ten recommendations below, including Death Note, Naruto, Hunter × Hunter, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and several newer or less familiar series.
Here, “totally free” means legally streamable without a subscription fee. It does not mean ad-free, permanently available, or accessible in every country. Tubi’s free catalog is ad-supported and can change, so check the individual title page before watching. Availability and listings in this guide were checked for the U.S. on August 11, 2026.
What “totally free” means here
Tubi describes its service as free and legal, with no subscription fee or credit card required. You may watch through a web browser, mobile device, smart TV, game console, or supported streaming device, although device support and catalog availability can change.
The trade-off is advertising. Episodes may include commercial breaks, and a show available today may later be removed, have its episode count changed, or appear with different language options. “Free” should therefore be read as free to watch with ads, not as a guarantee that a title will remain available forever.

This list is focused on the United States. Tubi’s catalog is region-sensitive, so the presence of a title on the U.S. service does not establish that it is available worldwide. Language labels also matter: some entries are specifically listed as subtitled, dubbed, or English-subbed. Check the title page rather than assuming that every series offers both an English dub and subtitles.
1. Death Note — the best instant hook
Best for: newcomers, psychological thrillers, strategic battles of intelligence
Tubi listing: Death Note (Subtitled); one season; TV-14
Light Yagami is an exceptionally gifted student who discovers a supernatural notebook capable of killing anyone whose name is written inside it. Instead of treating the notebook as a curse to escape, Light decides to use it to reshape society—and attracts the attention of the brilliant detective known only as L.
The resulting cat-and-mouse game is one of anime’s most immediately accessible premises. Much of the tension comes from planning, deception, and the question of how far Light will go to preserve his secret. You do not need prior anime experience to understand the stakes, and the series establishes its central conflict quickly.
Choose Death Note if you want a compact, high-concept thriller rather than a years-long adventure. It is also the strongest first recommendation for someone who thinks anime is only about fantasy battles. Be aware of murder, moral nihilism, disturbing themes, and sustained psychological tension.
2. Naruto — the long-form underdog story
Best for: long binge-watches, training arcs, rivalries, friendship, character growth
Tubi listing: Naruto (Subtitled); four seasons; TV-14
Naruto Uzumaki is an ostracized young ninja with an enormous ambition: he wants to become Hokage, the leader of his village. His isolation has a supernatural cause—a nine-tailed fox was sealed inside him—but his progress depends on persistence, teamwork, training, and the relationships he forms with fellow ninjas.
Naruto is the choice for viewers who want a substantial commitment. Its hundreds of episodes provide room for friendships and rivalries to develop gradually, while training and mission arcs build a large fictional world. The payoff is less about a single clever premise than watching an initially immature underdog grow into a more capable and responsible hero.
That scale is both the attraction and the warning. If you want a short introduction to anime, start with Death Note instead. If you enjoy becoming invested in a cast over a long period, Naruto offers far more room to settle in.
3. Hunter × Hunter — thoughtful shonen adventure
Best for: strategic action, layered character relationships, adventure that becomes darker
Tubi listing: Hunter × Hunter (Subbed) (2014); three seasons; TV-14
Gon Freecss sets out to become a Hunter, a demanding qualification that opens the door to dangerous expeditions and extraordinary opportunities. He also hopes that becoming a Hunter will help him find his absent father. Along the way, Gon forms a particularly important friendship with Killua, a talented boy from a far more troubling background.

The early episodes have the energy of a classic adventure series, especially during the Hunter Qualification Exam. Over time, however, the show becomes more psychologically complex. Friendship, ambition, violence, power, and the costs of pursuing a goal receive considerably more attention than the bright premise initially suggests.

- More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.
Pick this if you want a battle-oriented series whose strongest moments often come from character decisions and tactical problem-solving. The tone becomes darker and more intense as the story progresses, especially during the Chimera Ant material.
4. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure — the deliberately unconventional pick
Best for: flamboyant action, supernatural battles, gothic horror, genre-hopping
Tubi listing: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (2019); four seasons; TV-MA
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure follows the Joestar bloodline across different generations, eras, locations, and storytelling styles. One section may resemble gothic horror; another may become a globe-trotting supernatural adventure; another may lean into eccentric comedy and elaborate battles.
That unpredictability is the point. The series is visually and tonally louder than the average action show, with unusual powers, theatrical poses, strange names, and conflicts that can turn on an inventive interpretation of an ability. It is a good recommendation for someone who wants anime that feels unlike a conventional hero’s journey.
The TV-MA rating is important. Expect violence, horror elements, disturbing situations, and deliberately bizarre humor. If you want something restrained or family-oriented, choose Yu-Gi-Oh! or Haigakura instead.
5. Yu-Gi-Oh! — the family-friendlier gateway
Best for: younger viewers, nostalgia, card-game drama, supernatural adventure
Tubi listing: Yu-Gi-Oh! (2006); five seasons; TV-Y7
Yugi Muto solves an ancient Egyptian puzzle and awakens a mysterious spirit connected to the Pharaoh. Soon, dueling becomes the center of conflicts involving friendship, supernatural secrets, and high stakes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe series is an accessible entry point because its central activity is easy to understand: characters face one another in card duels, and each match carries dramatic consequences. It also works as a nostalgia watch for viewers who encountered the franchise through trading cards, games, or early-2000s television.
The TV-Y7 rating suggests a younger audience, but parents should still consider whether a particular child is comfortable with fantasy peril, frightening supernatural elements, and intense battles. “TV-Y7” does not mean every child will react to the show in the same way.
6. Captain Tsubasa: Junior Youth Arc — soccer as shonen spectacle
Best for: sports-anime newcomers, competition, rivalries without supernatural combat
Tubi listing: 2024 anime; one season; TV-14; English-subbed
Captain Tsubasa and his teammates travel to Paris for an international youth soccer tournament. The series treats the sport with the heightened drama associated with shonen anime: powerful rivalries, dramatic techniques, emotional comebacks, and matches that feel like major personal tests.

This is the list’s clearest alternative to ninja battles, supernatural notebooks, and fantasy powers. The competition remains the organizing principle, making it a useful choice for viewers who enjoy sports stories or want a newer production with a different rhythm.

Because the Tubi listing identifies it as English-subbed, viewers who specifically require an English dub should verify the current language options before starting.
7. Tougen Anki — the newer action-fantasy option
Best for: contemporary supernatural action, secret bloodlines, fast-moving fights
Tubi listing: 2025 anime; one season; TV-MA
Shiki Ichinose becomes entangled in a hidden conflict involving Oni bloodlines, demons, heroes, and a specialized academy. The series uses that mythology as the foundation for a fast-moving action story in which the characters must learn what they are—and what the conflict expects them to become.

It offers the familiar appeal of rival factions, inherited power, and escalating fights while presenting a more contemporary setting and mythology.
The listing shows one season, so do not approach it expecting a completed, decades-spanning epic. Its availability and future installments may change. The TV-MA rating also makes it unsuitable for viewers seeking a family-friendly recommendation.
8. Haigakura — mystery-forward fantasy
Best for: supernatural worldbuilding, unfolding mysteries, a less familiar fantasy setting
Tubi listing: 2025 anime; one season; TV-PG
Haigakura follows Ichiyo and Tenko as they become involved in an impending catastrophe. Rather than explaining every rule of its world immediately, the series lets its supernatural setting and central partnership unfold over time.
That makes it a good fit for viewers who enjoy being dropped into a setting with unanswered questions. The appeal is less about recognizing a famous franchise and more about discovering how the world works, why the catastrophe matters, and how the two central characters respond to it.
It is a newer, one-season listing rather than a completed long-form saga. Choose it when you want mystery and action in a compact package, not when you are looking for the enormous episode count of Naruto.
9. Naruto Spin-Off: Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals — a lighter follow-up
Best for: slapstick comedy, Naruto fans, short-form parody
Tubi listing: 2012 anime; one season; TV-PG
Rock Lee cannot use ninjutsu or genjutsu, but that limitation does not stop him from training with exaggerated determination. This chibi-style spin-off turns the familiar Naruto cast into the subjects of broad jokes, parody situations, and low-stakes comedic chaos.

It works best after you know the main characters. The humor depends on exaggerating their established personalities and abilities, so a first-time viewer may miss much of the joke. Treat it as a comic follow-up to Naruto, not as a replacement for the main series or a conventional continuation of its dramatic story.

10. World War Blue — the retro-gaming deep cut
Best for: video-game history, retro-gaming satire, deliberately strange premises
Tubi listing: World War Blue (Dubbed) (2012); one season; TV-MA
World War Blue turns the 1990s console wars into a fictional conflict between the Segua Kingdom and the Ninteldo Empire. Its character names, factions, and story openly draw on video-game references, making the series a curiosity for viewers who enjoy gaming history as much as anime.
This is the list’s niche recommendation rather than its safest all-purpose pick. The premise is intentionally unusual, and the TV-MA rating means it is not aimed at younger viewers. Choose it when the idea of retro-game satire sounds more appealing than another mainstream fantasy adventure.

Other legal free anime options
Tubi is the central service for this list, but it is not the only legitimate no-subscription option. Crunchyroll operates a separate free Crunchyroll Channel on select platforms, including certain LG and Vizio smart TVs, Amazon Freevee, and Roku.
The Crunchyroll Channel is a curated, linear channel: you watch whatever is currently scheduled, and its lineup changes. It is not equivalent to unrestricted access to Crunchyroll’s full on-demand library. Crunchyroll has identified examples including Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Moriarty the Patriot, PSYCHO-PASS, Arifureta, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, To Your Eternity, and Code Geass.
Do not confuse this with Crunchyroll’s ordinary seven-day Premium trial. That trial requires signing up for a Premium plan and providing an accepted payment method, so it is a temporary trial of a paid service—not a permanently free viewing route.
What to do if free streaming buffers
- Check whether the problem is local. Test another video service and, if possible, another device on the same network.
- Reduce video quality temporarily. If lower quality plays reliably, the issue may involve bandwidth, Wi-Fi congestion, or the device rather than the title itself.
- Try a wired connection or a different network. This can help distinguish wireless interference from an internet-service issue.
- Restart the app, browser, device, and router. Also check for app or operating-system updates.
- On Windows, use streaming-performance troubleshooting if the computer itself may be contributing to degraded playback. Outbyte discusses possible ISP throttling and streaming-quality troubleshooting, but no utility should be presented as a guaranteed fix for buffering; verify current terms and claims before recommending or purchasing anything.
Ads can also create pauses that feel like buffering. If the interruption occurs at the same point where a commercial break should begin, it may be normal ad-supported playback rather than a network failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tubi really free for watching anime?
For U.S. viewers, Tubi presents its service as free and legal without a subscription fee or credit card. It is ad-supported, so viewers see commercial breaks, and titles can leave the catalog.
Are these anime available outside the United States?
Not necessarily. Tubi’s catalog is region-sensitive. This list is specifically based on U.S. availability checked August 11, 2026; viewers elsewhere should search their local Tubi catalog or another licensed service.
Which free anime should a beginner watch first?
Start with Death Note if you want a compact psychological thriller, or Yu-Gi-Oh! if you prefer a younger-skewing fantasy adventure. Choose Naruto if you are ready for a much longer commitment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does free mean these shows are available in both English dub and subtitles?
No. The Tubi listings identify language availability title by title. Several recommendations are specifically marked subtitled, subbed, English-subbed, or dubbed, so check the individual listing before watching.
The Bottom Line
For the safest first choice, watch Death Note. Choose Naruto for a long character-driven binge, Hunter × Hunter for thoughtful shonen action, JoJo for something wonderfully strange, or Captain Tsubasa for sports drama. Tubi makes these recommendations legally watchable without a subscription in the U.S., but the service is ad-supported and its catalog, language options, and regional availability can change.
