Created, written and showrun by Kevin Williamson, the series begins as a story about a family business in decline before expanding into drug running, violence, law-enforcement scrutiny and betrayal.
All eight episodes premiered on Netflix on June 19, 2025. The series was canceled after its first season, so there is no verified Season 2 release date or production plan. Its first-season finale leaves several storylines unresolved.
What is The Waterfront about?
The Waterfront follows the Buckleys, a long-established family whose influence in Havenport is built around fishing, boats and restaurant interests. Their empire is no longer secure. Falling revenues, old secrets and increasingly desperate decisions push the family toward criminal activity.
Harlan Buckley, played by Holt McCallany, is the family patriarch and a fisherman-businessman with a complicated past. After suffering two heart attacks, he steps away from day-to-day control. His wife, Belle, and their son, Cane, attempt to keep the fishery operating, but their choices expose the family to increasingly serious danger. Harlan is eventually drawn back into the operation when he realizes how far matters have deteriorated.

At the same time, Harlan and Belle’s daughter Bree is trying to rebuild her life while in recovery from addiction and separated from her son, Diller. Her personal struggles are not a separate subplot: the family’s history, secrecy and instinct to protect its own repeatedly collide with Bree’s attempt to regain trust.
The result is a coastal family-crime drama rather than a conventional police procedural. The fishing business is both the family’s livelihood and its identity, which makes its collapse feel like a threat to the Buckleys’ entire sense of who they are.
Is The Waterfront based on a true story?
It is inspired by true events, but it is not a literal true-crime adaptation. The characters Harlan, Belle, Bree and Cane Buckley are fictional, and Havenport is a fictional town. The series does not present a documented Buckley family or reproduce one specific criminal case.

Williamson has described coming from a long line of fishermen and seeing the regional fishing industry decline during the 1980s. According to his account, his father eventually transported drugs on a fishing trawler, was caught, served time and later returned home.
That experience supplied the emotional and narrative foundation for the show, but Williamson has also distinguished his father from Harlan Buckley. His father was not the organized-crime kingpin portrayed in the drama. The most accurate description is that The Waterfront fictionalizes elements of Williamson’s family history and the economic pressures surrounding the North Carolina fishing industry.
Why the North Carolina setting matters
The setting is more than scenery. Docks, fishing boats, marshes, beach houses, restaurants and small-town relationships create the show’s social structure. The Buckleys’ reputation depends on their control of the local waterfront, while their financial problems are tied to an industry that no longer provides the security it once did.
Although Havenport is fictional, the production used real North Carolina locations, including Wilmington and Southport. Those communities help give the drama its coastal Southern atmosphere. Viewers interested in the locations should distinguish between the fictional town in the story and the real places used to create it.

Harlan is the Buckley patriarch, a fisherman and businessman who has built a formidable family operation. His two heart attacks force him to confront the cost of stepping away. Belle Buckley — Maria Bello
Belle is the family’s determined matriarch. While Harlan is absent from active control, she helps run the fishery and makes increasingly questionable choices to keep the business alive. Cane Buckley — Jake Weary
Cane is Bree’s brother and a key figure in the fishery. He is eager to prove himself to Harlan and deeply invested in the family business. His desire for approval contributes to decisions that pull the Buckleys further into criminal dealings.

- “Playing with Fire” — Criminal pressure intensifies as the Buckleys take greater risks.

- “I’m a Hugger” — Personal and criminal tensions continue to collide.

The Waterfront ending explained
Spoilers for the entire first season follow.
The season’s defining criminal turn involves the use of Buckley ships to run drugs. The operation is not presented as an unrelated criminal adventure; it grows out of the family’s worsening financial position and its determination to preserve the fishery. Once the boats become part of the drug-running operation, the Buckleys are exposed to both outside criminals and law enforcement.
Harlan re-enters the criminal underworld after learning that Cane has agreed to use Buckley ships for the operation. His return is motivated by family protection, but it also confirms the show’s moral pattern: each attempt to save the family creates another liability for it.
The finale also reveals that the Parker crime family is connected to an execution witnessed by a young Bree. That revelation recontextualizes elements of Bree’s history and ties the family’s present danger to older violence and secrecy. The past is not merely personal backstory; it is part of the criminal network now threatening the Buckleys.
The season ends with major characters and relationships in dangerous, unsettled positions, including a confrontation at sea. The finale was designed to create continuing story possibilities rather than provide a complete resolution. The Buckleys’ business, alliances and family relationships remain unstable when the credits roll.

Why was The Waterfront canceled?
Netflix canceled The Waterfront after one season. The cancellation was reported on August 25–26, 2025, with Variety confirming that Netflix would not continue the series.
Netflix has not announced a Season 2 release date, production schedule or returning-cast lineup. The correct status is therefore canceled after one season, not “on hiatus,” “awaiting renewal” or “returning soon.”
Because the first season ends with unresolved criminal and family conflicts, viewers should expect an open-ended conclusion rather than a fully closed story. There is currently no verified continuation of those arcs at Netflix.
What genre is it?
The Waterfront is best described as a coastal family-crime drama with heightened, soapy and melodramatic elements. It is not a documentary, a police procedural or a direct true-crime retelling.
Its strongest distinguishing features are the North Carolina fishing-industry setting, the autobiographical inspiration, the family-business premise and the ensemble conflict. Viewers looking for a restrained investigation may find its emotional style deliberately heightened. The unresolved ending is an additional consideration for anyone deciding whether to start a canceled series.

There is no verified DVD or Blu-ray release for this Netflix series in the supplied research. Be careful with exact-title shopping results: On the Waterfront, the 1954 Marlon Brando film, is an unrelated title, and Amazon Music results labeled “The Waterfront” are not proof of an official soundtrack for this series.
Should you watch it?
The Waterfront is a reasonable choice for viewers who like family sagas in which financial desperation leads to criminal decisions, especially when the setting is as important as the plot. Its fishing-business premise and North Carolina locations give it a distinct identity, while the Buckleys’ inherited damage and competing loyalties supply the central tension.
The main caveats are its melodramatic tone and its canceled status. The first season does not resolve every major conflict, so viewers who require a complete ending may prefer to know that before watching. Those comfortable with an open-ended first season will find a compact eight-episode crime story with substantial room for continuation—room that Netflix will not currently use.
