The 26 Biggest Movies of 2026: What Has Arrived and What’s Still Coming

The original 2026 movie calendar is now outdated. Here are all 26 major titles, separated into earlier-dated releases and films still scheduled for theaters through December, with caveats for changing dates and theatrical windows.

As of August 11, 2026, 15 films on this calendar have reached their announced January–July release window, while 11 more remain scheduled from August through December. The list below refreshes the original pre-2026 roundup rather than pretending that all 26 movies are still upcoming. It covers planned theatrical releases in the United States and/or Canada; dates can change, and an earlier date does not by itself prove that a film opened everywhere as scheduled.

How to read the 2026 movie calendar

This is an editorial selection, not a ranking or a box-office forecast. The films stand out because of their established franchises, literary or comic-book source material, major filmmakers, recognizable casts, or explicit theatrical and IMAX positioning.

  • Earlier-dated means the announced date fell before August 11, 2026. It does not independently confirm the film’s opening status in every market.
  • Upcoming means the date was still ahead on the supplied calendar at the August 11 cutoff.
  • The dates are primarily a North American theatrical calendar. International release dates, formats, and availability may differ.
  • Release schedules are changeable. The Numbers describes its consolidated calendar as a list of planned U.S. and/or Canadian releases and warns that films can be canceled or rescheduled.

When tickets become available, check local showtimes rather than relying only on a national date—especially for limited, IMAX, or regional openings.

January through July: the earlier-dated films

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — January 16, 2026

Nia DaCosta directs the next chapter of the 28 Years Later horror series. Returning performers identified for the film include Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams, Jack O’Connell, and Chi-Lewis Parry. Its place at the start of the calendar reflects the continuing profile of the post-apocalyptic franchise, but the January 16 date is now outside the current release window.

Wuthering Heights — February 13, 2026

Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel places Margot Robbie in the role of Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. The project combines a famous literary property with Fennell’s high-profile directing career, making it one of the year’s most prominent literary adaptations.

Scream 7 — February 27, 2026

Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott, the central survivor of the Scream series. Kevin Williamson, who helped establish the franchise as its writer, returns as writer-director. The film’s significance rests on that combination of a legacy lead and the involvement of one of the property’s defining creators.

The Bride! — March 6, 2026

Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this 1930s-set reimagining of the Frankenstein’s-bride story. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale lead the cast. Rather than a straightforward period adaptation, the film was presented as a new take on one of the most recognizable figures in gothic cinema.

Project Hail Mary — March 20, 2026

Ryan Gosling stars as a science teacher who becomes an astronaut in this adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel. The film was positioned as a major Amazon MGM theatrical release, with a large-scale science-fiction premise and a well-known literary source behind it.

If you want to approach Christopher Nolan’s later literary event film through its source material, Homer’s The Odyssey is a useful reading companion. That recommendation is for the epic itself—not a suggestion that Nolan’s movie is available for home purchase.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — April 4, 2026

The animated follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie brings back Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. The voice cast identified for the film includes Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black. Its appeal is built on Nintendo’s globally recognizable characters and the commercial visibility of the previous animated film.

Michael — April 24, 2026

Antoine Fuqua directs this Michael Jackson biopic, with Jaafar Jackson playing Michael and Colman Domingo playing Joe Jackson. The casting gives the film a particularly direct connection to its subject while Fuqua brings a major studio filmmaking profile to the project.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 — May 1, 2026

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt return for the sequel to the 2006 fashion-magazine comedy-drama. The returning central cast is the main reason this sequel commands attention: the new film is tied to a title whose characters and workplace setting remain unusually recognizable nearly two decades after the original.

The Mandalorian and Grogu — May 22, 2026

Lucasfilm lists a May 22 release for Jon Favreau’s film, starring Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White. The Mandalorian and Grogu is especially notable because StarWars.com describes it as an exclusive theatrical and IMAX release, giving the television-born characters a specifically promoted cinema event.

Disclosure Day — June 12, 2026

Steven Spielberg directs this science-fiction film starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Colin Firth. Plot details have been kept intentionally limited, so the strongest confirmed selling points are Spielberg’s direction, the ensemble, and the film’s science-fiction positioning rather than a detailed premise.

Toy Story 5 — June 19, 2026

Disney’s summer 2026 announcement places the fifth Toy Story film on June 19 and describes a conflict between the familiar toys and new technology. Bonnie’s tablet-like Lilypad is identified as part of that premise, giving the sequel a new version of the toys-versus-change theme that has defined the series.

Supergirl — June 26, 2026

Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl in the DC film directed by Craig Gillespie. James Gunn is among the producers identified for the project. It is one of the major superhero releases in the calendar, but it is also a distinct opportunity to establish a new screen version of the character rather than simply continue a previous film series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moana — July 10, 2026

Disney’s official page lists the live-action Moana for July 10, with Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui. Johnson returns to the role of Maui from the animated film, while Laga’aia takes the lead in the live-action version.

The Odyssey — July 17, 2026

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic was presented as an expansive, IMAX-oriented event film. The ensemble is led by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Tom Holland. The combination of a foundational literary work, Nolan’s large-format filmmaking, and a major cast makes it one of the clearest theatrical-event titles in the 2026 calendar.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day — July 31, 2026

Sony confirms an exclusive theatrical release date of July 31. Destin Daniel Cretton directs, with Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo among the listed cast. Because July 31 falls shortly before the August 11 editorial cutoff, it is best described here as earlier-dated rather than assuming a uniform release status in every market.

August through December: the films still scheduled

Coyote vs. Acme — August 28, 2026

This hybrid Looney Tunes film centers on Wile E. Coyote and stars John Cena. It appears on the calendar after Ketchup Entertainment acquired the film for release, giving a project that had attracted unusual industry attention a path to a theatrical date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical Magic 2 — September 18, 2026

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are listed to return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Susanne Bier directs the sequel. The film’s primary draw is the reunion of the original leads with the supernatural family story from the first Practical Magic.

Terrifier 4 — October 1, 2026 — date to verify

Damien Leone is identified as writer-director, with David Howard Thornton returning as Art the Clown. The supplied calendar lists October 1, but that date should be independently rechecked before publication because release schedules can move and the neighboring October listings create a date-order conflict.

Digger — October 2, 2026 — working title and date to verify

The Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu collaboration was listed under the working or title-announcement name Digger. Plot details remain limited. The October 2 placement comes immediately after the listed Terrifier 4 date, so both the final title and the exact release order deserve confirmation from the distributor.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol — November 13, 2026

Paramount’s official site lists Ebenezer for theaters on November 13. Ti West directs, and Johnny Depp is identified as the star playing Ebenezer. The Christmas-season placement and the familiar Dickens source make it one of the season’s most recognizable literary releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping — November 20, 2026

This is the second Hunger Games prequel and takes place during the 50th Hunger Games, before the story of Katniss Everdeen. Its historical position inside Panem’s timeline is the key confirmed detail: it expands the franchise’s world without returning to the original trilogy’s central period.

Madden — November 26, 2026 — distribution date to verify

Nicolas Cage is listed as John Madden and Christian Bale as Al Davis. The roundup gives the film a November 26 theatrical date, but a separate Amazon update discusses Madden in a Prime Video context with a November 18 date. Until a current theatrical-distributor confirmation resolves the difference, November 26 should be treated as a reported theatrical listing, not a fully settled release date.

Narnia — November 26, 2026 — theatrical window to verify

Greta Gerwig’s Narnia is described as an adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, with Daniel Craig and Emma Mackey among the confirmed cast. The exact theatrical rollout and its relationship to later streaming availability need clarification from the distributor. That window question matters because a film can have a theatrical engagement without following a conventional wide-release pattern.

Dune: Part 3 — December 18, 2026

Denis Villeneuve returns for the third Dune film. The listed returning or announced cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Robert Pattinson, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Its December date places it among the year’s major science-fiction franchise events, although the final schedule remains subject to normal distributor changes.

Avengers: Doomsday — December 18, 2026

Anthony and Joe Russo direct this major Marvel event. Robert Downey Jr. is identified as Victor von Doom, while Chris Evans is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney’s corporate materials identify the film as a 2026 theatrical title, and the company’s summer announcement also confirms a theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame ahead of the December event.

Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday share December 18 on the supplied calendar. That makes the date one of the year’s most crowded and consequential theatrical weekends, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that both titles will retain the date.

Werwulf — December 25, 2026

Robert Eggers directs this period werewolf film, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe among the reported cast. Its Christmas Day placement and Eggers’s association with atmospheric historical horror make it a distinctive counterpoint to the season’s franchise-heavy releases.

Which dates are most likely to change?

Every date in a forward-looking release calendar should be considered provisional, but four entries need more explicit caution:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Terrifier 4 and Digger: the supplied calendar places them on October 1 and October 2, respectively, and the order should be checked against current distributor information.
  2. Madden: the reported November 26 theatrical date conflicts with a separate November 18 Prime Video context.
  3. Narnia: its theatrical rollout and later streaming relationship are not fully resolved in the available research.
  4. All earlier-dated films: being before August 11 means only that the listed date has passed. It is not a substitute for market-by-market confirmation.

For the firmest date information, prioritize current distributor and studio pages. In the supplied research, Lucasfilm confirms The Mandalorian and Grogu for May 22; Disney confirms Toy Story 5 for June 19 and Moana for July 10; Sony confirms Spider-Man: Brand New Day for July 31; and Paramount lists Ebenezer for November 13. Consolidated calendars remain useful for comparison, but their planned-release status means they should not override a newer official announcement.

What this list does not claim

These are not guaranteed hits, a ranked prediction of the year’s top box-office performers, or a statement about audience reception. They are high-profile 2026 theatrical candidates selected for their franchises, source material, filmmakers, stars, and event positioning. Streaming availability is also outside the scope of this calendar; theatrical dates and later home-viewing windows are separate questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all 26 movies still coming to theaters?

No. The original calendar was assembled before 2026 began. As of August 11, 2026, 15 listed dates fall in the January–July window and 11 remain scheduled for August–December. A past date does not independently confirm that a film opened everywhere as planned.

Which 2026 movie release dates are the least certain?

The supplied research specifically flags Terrifier 4 and Digger because their October dates need rechecking, Madden because its reported theatrical date differs from a Prime Video date, and Narnia because its theatrical rollout and later streaming window need clarification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are these U.S. release dates?

They are primarily dates for planned theatrical releases in the United States and/or Canada. International markets can receive films on different dates or through different release patterns.

Does a theatrical release date include streaming availability?

No. A theatrical date only identifies the planned cinema window. The research for this calendar does not establish streaming services or home-viewing dates.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 calendar is best understood in two parts: 15 films with dates earlier in the year and 11 still scheduled from August through Christmas. The most important remaining dates to watch are the October horror and event-film cluster, the November titles with distribution or window caveats, and the December 18 collision between Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday. Recheck official distributor pages before making travel, ticket, or publication decisions.
