The complete solution is below. Stop here if you want to finish the puzzle without seeing the categories and all 16 answers.
Yellow: Metaphors for potentially volatile situations
- CAN OF WORMS
- HORNET’S NEST
- MINEFIELD
- PANDORA’S BOX
Each phrase describes something that can become complicated, dangerous, or difficult once it is opened, entered, or disturbed. Opening a can of worms or Pandora’s box can create unexpected problems; entering a minefield is hazardous; and disturbing a hornet’s nest can provoke an aggressive response.
Green: Bar events
- HAPPY HOUR
- KARAOKE
- LIVE MUSIC
- TRIVIA NIGHT
These are activities or recurring events commonly offered by bars and pubs. The group is relatively direct, but the tile-heavy board includes several phrases that can initially pull attention toward other associations.
Blue: Words after a welcome departure
- ABOUT TIME
- FINALLY
- GOOD RIDDANCE
- SAYONARA
These expressions can signal relief that someone has left or that an overdue departure has finally happened. “About time” and “finally” suggest that the departure was overdue, “good riddance” welcomes the person’s absence, and “sayonara” is a farewell.
Purple: Ending with synonyms for “swindle”
- AMERICAN HUSTLE
- COMIC CON
- GOLDEN FLEECE
- LUCKY STIFF
The final words provide the connection: a hustle or a con can refer to a swindle, while to fleece someone is to cheat or take money from them unfairly. “Stiff” is used in the relevant slang sense associated with a swindle or swindler. The category is the puzzle’s most abstract because the connection is found at the end of each phrase rather than in the phrase’s overall subject.
Why Connections #855 can be tricky
This board contains many two-word expressions, so several tiles look as though they belong together for more than one reason. LIVE MUSIC, KARAOKE, and TRIVIA NIGHT strongly suggest a bar, but other phrases resemble titles, cultural references, or idioms. AMERICAN HUSTLE, COMIC CON, and GOLDEN FLEECE may initially be read as names or references rather than as examples of the final-word pattern used by the purple group.

A practical way to approach the board is to lock in the bar events first, then look for the four volatile-situation metaphors. SAYONARA and GOOD RIDDANCE make the departure group easier to recognize; ABOUT TIME and FINALLY complete it. The remaining four tiles reveal the wordplay-based purple category.
