Although she was often introduced publicly through her husband, Singer Reiner had a professional life of her own, including work as a still photographer, producing credits on documentaries and feature films, and an Emmy nomination for Albert Brooks: Defending My Life.
She also became part of one of Hollywood’s most memorable behind-the-scenes stories: Rob Reiner said that meeting Michele while making When Harry Met Sally… changed how he understood the film’s central relationship and helped lead him to rewrite its ending.
How Michele Singer Reiner met Rob Reiner
Michele Singer was working as a still photographer on the New York set of When Harry Met Sally…, the 1989 romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron. She and Reiner met during production and married in 1989, several months after the film’s release, according to reporting from the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times.
The relationship became closely associated with the movie because Reiner later connected his own experience with the film’s original structure. In an interview with the Library of Congress, he explained that the first version of the story left Harry and Sally apart. After meeting Michele, falling in love, and marrying her, Reiner said he came to feel that the characters should find their way back to each other. He consequently changed the ending so Harry Burns and Sally Albright reunited.

That anecdote does not mean Michele wrote the screenplay or single-handedly created the film’s ending. Nora Ephron wrote the script, and Reiner directed it. But Reiner’s own account makes Michele’s influence on his emotional understanding of the story unusually clear.
Readers who want to revisit the film at the center of their origin story can look for When Harry Met Sally… on DVD or Blu-ray.
She was a photographer before becoming a producer
Singer Reiner’s first major professional identity was as a photographer. One of her best-known assignments was photographing the cover of Donald Trump’s 1987 business book, Trump: The Art of the Deal. That image is a notable part of her work, but it should be treated as one recognizable assignment rather than as a summary of her career.
She also worked as a special photographer on the 1990 film Misery. Still photographers on film productions document actors, sets, costumes, and key moments for publicity, continuity, and archival purposes. The work is often less visible to audiences than directing or acting, even though those images become part of a film’s public identity.
As her career developed, Singer Reiner moved from still photography into film and television production. Reported producing credits include:
- Shock and Awe (2017), a political drama directed by Rob Reiner;
- Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (2023), a documentary special built around a conversation between Rob Reiner and comedian Albert Brooks;
- God & Country (2024), a documentary examining Christian nationalism and American politics; and
- Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025).
The Television Academy lists Michele Reiner as a producer nominee for the 2024 Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special Emmy for Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. She was an Emmy nominee, not an Emmy winner; the special did not win that category. The nomination is nevertheless a concrete recognition of her later producing work, independently documented by the Television Academy.

Her advocacy and philanthropy
Michele and Rob Reiner were also active in public causes outside entertainment. NPR’s obituary described Michele as a driving force behind the couple’s support for marriage equality. The Human Rights Campaign reported that the Reiners helped organize supporters and strategists in campaigns for LGBTQ+ equality and were honored at the organization’s 2015 HRC Las Vegas Gala.
The couple also supported early-childhood development. A 1997 Education Week report identified Rob and Michele Singer Reiner as producers of I Am Your Child, a public-awareness program about the importance of the first years of childhood. The organization ZERO TO THREE later described the Reiners as longtime champions for young children and connected them with California’s Proposition 10 campaign and related early-childhood initiatives.

The family generally maintained a lower public profile than Rob Reiner’s entertainment career. After Michele and Rob’s deaths, Jake and Romy asked for privacy and said that memorial-service information would be shared later. No memorial date should be assumed unless confirmed by the family or an authoritative news report.

Nick Reiner was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. According to the Associated Press, he pleaded not guilty on February 23, 2026. That is the latest court status established for this account. An arrest or criminal charge is not a conviction, and no trial outcome should be inferred.
The LAPD announcement provides the official account of the arrest. Because the criminal case remains a legal proceeding, the tragedy should not eclipse the rest of Singer Reiner’s life: her photography, her transition into producing, her work on documentary and film projects, and her advocacy with Rob Reiner for children and LGBTQ+ equality.
Why Michele Singer Reiner is remembered
Michele Singer Reiner occupied several different roles across her life. She worked behind the camera as a photographer, helped make films as a producer, and used her public position to support causes involving early childhood and marriage equality. Her marriage to Rob Reiner brought her additional attention, but it was not the whole of her identity.
Her connection to When Harry Met Sally… remains the most famous story about her because it links a private relationship to a celebrated piece of filmmaking. Yet her professional record continued long after that film: she photographed major productions, produced projects decades later, and received recognition from the Television Academy for her work on Albert Brooks: Defending My Life.
