Prime Video Ad Free has not simply vanished: Amazon has replaced it in the United States with Prime Video Ultra, a $4.99-per-month add-on that combines ad-free eligible on-demand Prime viewing with 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, and higher household limits.
Amazon has replaced the U.S. Prime Video Ad Free add-on with Prime Video Ultra. For U.S. customers, Ultra is the current add-on for ad-free viewing of eligible on-demand Prime movies and TV shows, and it also adds Amazon’s premium-format and higher-limit benefits. It is not a worldwide end to ad-free Prime Video, and it does not make every part of Prime Video ad-free.
What changed
Prime Video Ultra is a U.S.-only add-on that costs $4.99 per month in addition to a qualifying Prime or Prime Video subscription. Annual Prime members can choose an annual Ultra plan priced at $45.99. Amazon’s Prime membership price itself did not change as part of this transition.
Contemporaneous reporting of Amazon’s subscriber notice said the change took effect on April 10, 2026. Amazon’s current plan information now presents Ultra as the U.S. offering.

The important wording is that Amazon replaced or rebranded the U.S. Ad Free add-on. Saying that Amazon “ended ad-free Prime Video” would be misleading: Amazon’s current help information still uses the Ad Free name in a number of markets outside the U.S., including Canada, the UK, Australia, much of Europe, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Türkiye.
Prime Video included with Prime vs. Prime Video Ultra
| Feature | Prime Video benefit included with Prime | Prime Video Ultra (U.S.) |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible on-demand Prime movies and TV shows | Limited ads | Ad-free |
| HD, HDR10, HDR10+ | Included | Included |
| Dolby Vision | Included | Included |
| UHD/4K | Not included | Included; Amazon lists it as an Ultra-exclusive benefit |
| Dolby Atmos | Not included | Included for eligible titles and compatible setups |
| Downloads | Up to 50 | Up to 100 |
| Concurrent streams | Up to 4 | Up to 5 |
| Price | Included with Prime | $4.99/month on top of a qualifying subscription |
Amazon’s current comparison also indicates that the earlier arrangement had lower limits: 25 downloads and three concurrent streams. Ultra therefore changes more than the label and monthly price; it is also the route to Amazon’s current 4K/UHD and Atmos benefits for eligible Prime titles in the U.S.
“Ad-free” has important limits
Ultra does not remove every advertisement from every Prime Video experience. Amazon says advertising may still appear in live TV and live events, including sports, in select ad-supported content, and in add-on subscriptions. Free ad-supported programming, live channels, and sports should be treated as potentially ad-supported even when an account has Ultra.

- The Anker Advantage: Join the 80 million+ powered by our leading technology.
- Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
- Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
That distinction matters for documentary viewers. An on-demand documentary included with Prime may be eligible for ad-free Ultra playback, while a live event, a free ad-supported channel, or a documentary accessed through a separate channel subscription may follow different advertising rules.

Ultra does not guarantee 4K or Dolby Atmos on every documentary
Ultra makes those formats available where Amazon offers them, but the plan alone cannot create a premium stream. A particular title must be available in the format, and your setup must support it. Before upgrading mainly for picture or sound, check all four parts of the chain:
- The title: Look at its Prime Video detail page for UHD/4K, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos badges.
- The playback device: It needs to support the format you want.
- Your TV and audio system: A 4K display is needed for 4K; Dolby Atmos also requires compatible audio equipment and an appropriate connection path.
- Your connection: Available resolution and audio can depend on streaming bandwidth.
Not all Prime movies and TV shows are offered in every resolution or audio format. In other words, Ultra can unlock access, but it cannot turn an HD-only documentary into a 4K Dolby Atmos presentation.

- Plug and play: This 8K hdmi extender is small and easy to carry, which is convenient for daily life and travel, you can plug and play anytime, anywhere
- Wide range of applications: standard HDMI interface, suitable for all devices with HDMI male head, such as TV Box, Xbox 360, PS4, PC, Laptop, HDTV, Monitor, and Projector.Worked great to extend an HDMI cable instead of having to run a new longer cable in a tight complicated space

Do you need a Fire TV device?
No. Prime Video works on Amazon devices, smart TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players, phones and tablets, computers, and other supported media players. The right first step is to see whether the device you already own supports the formats you care about.
If it does not, a 4K-capable streamer such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is an optional upgrade to compare. Amazon identifies the second-generation model as supporting 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos; Atmos playback on Prime Video remains limited to select titles and compatible connected equipment. It is a way to address an equipment limitation, not a requirement for subscribing to Ultra.

Which plan name should you look for?
- In the United States: Look for Prime Video Ultra. It is the current name for the relevant add-on.
- Outside the United States: Check the Prime Video account page for your country. The add-on may still be called Prime Video Ad Free.
- If your priority is fewer interruptions on on-demand Prime titles: Ultra is the U.S. option, subject to the live, sports, add-on, and ad-supported-content exceptions.
- If your priority is 4K or Atmos: Confirm the title and your hardware before paying for the add-on.
Is Prime Video Ultra worth it for documentary fans?
It is most compelling for frequent U.S. Prime Video viewers who want both ad-free eligible on-demand viewing and access to Amazon’s UHD/4K and Dolby Atmos tier. The extra download and simultaneous-stream allowances may also matter in a household that watches on several devices or downloads documentaries for travel.
It is less compelling if you mostly watch live sports, free ad-supported channels, or add-on channels, because those can still carry advertising. It may also be unnecessary if the documentaries you watch are HD-only or your current display and sound system cannot use the premium formats.

Do I need a Fire TV Stick to use Prime Video Ultra?
No. It is optional. Prime Video supports many smart TVs, consoles, mobile devices, computers, Blu-ray players, and media players. Only consider new hardware if your existing device cannot support the formats you want.
Will Ultra make every Prime Video title play in 4K or Dolby Atmos?
No. Ultra provides access to 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos for eligible Prime titles, but the individual title, your device, display or audio equipment, and your bandwidth must all support the format.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the U.S., Prime Video Ad Free has become Prime Video Ultra: a $4.99-per-month add-on with ad-free eligible on-demand Prime titles, 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos access for eligible content, and higher download and stream limits. It is not a universal no-ads pass, and the older Ad Free name remains relevant in many countries outside the U.S.
