The best free music download site depends on your intended use. For personal listening, choose an artist-authorized download from Bandcamp, Jamendo, Free Music Archive, SoundCloud, or Internet Archive. For a documentary, YouTube video, podcast, or commercial project, choose a track whose license explicitly covers synchronization and your distribution model.
A real download is not the same as an app’s offline cache, and “free,” “royalty-free,” and “Creative Commons” do not mean the same thing. The 11 sources below offer music that is artist-authorized, openly licensed, public-domain-oriented, or distributed under a clearly stated production-music license.
Choose by what you plan to do with the music
The best free music download site depends on whether you want a file for personal listening or music you can legally place in a documentary, YouTube video, podcast, game, advertisement, or client project. A download button proves only that the platform or rights holder has enabled that download; it does not automatically grant permission to remix, synchronize, monetize, redistribute, broadcast, or commercially exploit the recording.
Quick recommendation
- Personal listening: Start with Bandcamp, Free Music Archive, Jamendo Music, SoundCloud tracks with an official download button, or Internet Archive.
- YouTube and social video: Start with YouTube Audio Library, then consider Mixkit, Pixabay Music, Incompetech, or a Creative Commons track whose license allows commercial synchronization.
- Podcasts: Check Incompetech, ccMixter, Free Music Archive, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, and appropriately licensed Jamendo tracks.
- Commercial, client, game, app, broadcast, or physical releases: Require an explicit license covering that exact use. Never infer permission from the word “free.”
The list below separates artist-authorized downloads, Creative Commons and public-domain resources, and production-music libraries. It does not claim that current major-label albums are freely available.

The 11 best legal sources
1. Free Music Archive — best overall for open-license discovery
Free Music Archive is one of the strongest starting points when you need downloadable music and are prepared to inspect the license for each track. Its catalog focuses on original music from independent artists, with track-level information covering Creative Commons, public-domain, and other permissions. The advanced search exposes filters such as Public Domain, Commercial Use, and Use in a Remix or Video.
- Open FMA’s advanced search.
- Search by artist, title, genre, mood, or keyword.
- Apply the usage filters relevant to your project.
- Open the individual track page and record the exact license shown there.
- Download through the track page and copy any required attribution.
Do not call the entire catalog commercially reusable. FMA’s FAQ explains that “free” does not mean every song can be altered, synchronized, redistributed, or used without conditions. Older FMA-Limited “Download Only” terms may allow personal downloading and listening while excluding video, redistribution, broadcast, or podcast use. Synchronizing music with a documentary or other video is an adaptation, so tracks marked NoDerivatives may be unsuitable without additional permission.
Best for: Documentary research, student films, podcasts, and video projects where license checking is acceptable.
2. Jamendo Music — best for a broad independent catalog
Jamendo Music offers a large independent catalog for listening and artist-authorized downloads. Its free Music service should not be confused with Jamendo Licensing, which offers paid licenses for defined commercial uses.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose Jamendo Music when looking for free listener downloads.
- Browse by genre, mood, artist, or playlist.
- Open the specific track or release.
- Read the applicable Creative Commons or platform terms.
- Download using Jamendo’s official control.
For a monetized documentary, sponsored podcast, advertisement, client project, game, app, broadcast, or physical release, compare the free track’s terms with Jamendo’s commercial licensing options. Jamendo’s licensing documentation distinguishes online video, podcasts, social media, corporate content, broadcast, games, apps, and physical distribution.
Best for: Discovering independent music and finding a clear paid licensing route when a project expands beyond personal use.
3. Bandcamp — best for high-quality artist-authorized files
Bandcamp is the best choice when “free download” means obtaining a real, portable, high-quality file directly from an artist or label. Releases may be free, set to a zero-minimum “name your price,” or available only after payment. Supported formats include MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF, according to Bandcamp’s help center.
- Open the artist’s release page.
- Check whether the price is free or permits a zero payment.
- Complete the download.
- Choose MP3 for compatibility, or FLAC, WAV, or AIFF for archival and editing purposes.
- Unzip the release if Bandcamp provides a ZIP archive.
A free Bandcamp download normally authorizes the fan to obtain the file. It does not automatically authorize synchronization with a documentary, YouTube video, podcast, advertisement, game, or client project. Bandcamp treats using purchased music in videos, commercials, and podcasts as a separate rights question.

4. Internet Archive Audio — best for historical and unusual recordings
Internet Archive Audio is valuable for old-time radio, historical recordings, live music, spoken-word material, public-domain resources, and obscure collections. Individual items may offer MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, or other deposited files.
- Open the individual item page.
- Read the Rights, License, or Usage information.
- Check the uploader’s notes and any collection-specific restrictions.
- Download only the files listed on that item page.
- Save the rights statement with the recording.
Internet Archive is a host for many collections and uploaders. A download button does not by itself establish that a recording is public domain or cleared for commercial reuse. A public-domain composition can also appear in a modern copyrighted recording, and a live recording may be available for listening without being cleared for a film or broadcast.
Best for: Archival documentaries and historical research, provided the item-level rights are checked.

Musopen specializes in classical recordings, sheet music, textbooks, and educational material. It is particularly useful when a documentary needs classical repertoire or music education resources.
- Search or browse the music catalog.
- Open the individual recording.
- Check whether free download access is available.
- Review the recording’s usage status and format.
- Download from the official item page.
Do not assume that every recording is free in every format. Musopen has membership levels, and access varies by item. Also separate the composition from the recording: an old Beethoven composition may be public domain while a modern orchestra’s performance remains protected.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Best for: Classical background music, educational projects, and public-domain-oriented research.
6. ccMixter — best for remixes, samples, and stems
ccMixter is built around remixing and sampling rather than passive listening. Individual submissions identify their Creative Commons license, and the catalog includes remixes, samples, a cappella performances, and stems.
- Search ccMixter or dig.ccMixter.
- Open the individual submission.
- Identify the exact Creative Commons license.
- Check commercial-use, derivative-work, attribution, and ShareAlike conditions.
- Download the source or sample.
- Carry the required credit and license information into the finished work.
Many ccMixter works are noncommercial. A remix can also inherit restrictions from a source sample, and the site name does not guarantee that every submission has identical terms. Read the license attached to the specific file.
Best for: Documentary sound design, experimental editing, remixes, podcasts, and creators who need stems or samples.
7. SoundCloud — best for artist-approved downloads
SoundCloud belongs on this list only because some artists enable an official file download. It is not a general-purpose MP3 harvesting site.
- Use SoundCloud on the web and sign in if required.
- Open the individual track.
- Look beneath the waveform for Download file.
- Save the original file offered by SoundCloud.
SoundCloud’s help documentation says that not all tracks are downloadable, playlists cannot be downloaded as a whole, and direct track downloads are unavailable on mobile. Paid subscribers may save content for offline playback, but that is not the same as receiving an exportable audio file.
If the official download control is absent, treat the track as stream-only. Do not use SoundCloud-to-MP3 converters. An enabled download also does not necessarily grant commercial synchronization or redistribution rights; look for a separate Creative Commons license or written permission.
Best for: Artist-authorized downloads and independent discovery, not blanket reuse.
8. Pixabay Music — best for straightforward creator background music
Pixabay Music is organized as a creator-oriented stock-music library. It is useful for documentaries, explainers, vlogs, tutorials, presentations, and social content where background music is needed.
- Search by genre, mood, duration, or keyword.
- Open the individual track page.
- Read the track’s license summary and any additional instructions.
- Download from the official page.
- Save the track URL and license information with the project files.
Pixabay uses its own content license, not a blanket Creative Commons license. “Royalty-free” does not mean public domain, copyright-free, or permission to redistribute the audio as a standalone file. Check individual track notes, including any Content ID guidance. A valid license also cannot guarantee that an automated platform will never issue a mistaken claim.
Best for: Practical background music when the project fits Pixabay’s custom license.
9. YouTube Audio Library — best for YouTube videos
YouTube Audio Library is the lowest-friction choice for YouTube creators. It provides music and sound effects inside YouTube Studio, supports filters for genre, mood, artist, attribution, and duration, and allows MP3 downloads. YouTube says new releases are added twice a month.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open the left-hand menu and select Audio library.
- Choose the Music tab.
- Search or filter by genre, mood, artist, attribution, or duration.
- Download the MP3.
- If attribution is required, copy the supplied credit into the video description.
YouTube says Audio Library music can be used in monetized videos, but its permissions are especially useful for YouTube. Do not automatically treat every Audio Library track as a universal license for a podcast feed, broadcast, game, app, or physical release. Also distinguish Audio Library licenses from other Creator Music licenses, which may have one-video or platform restrictions.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute10. Mixkit — best for online video and podcasts without required attribution
Mixkit publishes a dedicated free stock-music license. Its official FAQ says the free music can be used for YouTube, blogs, music videos, websites, social media, podcasts, and online advertisements. Attribution is appreciated but not required for its free music.
- Browse by genre or mood.
- Open the individual track page.
- Read the current license.
- Download the file.
- Keep the track page and license with the project records.
Mixkit’s free license specifically excludes uses including CDs, DVDs, video games, and TV or radio broadcasts. That makes it a strong choice for many online creator projects but a poor assumption for interactive, physical, or broadcast media.
Best for: Online documentaries, podcasts, websites, and social video that fit the published restrictions.
11. Incompetech — best for recognizable instrumental production music
Incompetech provides Kevin MacLeod’s instrumental music with direct downloads and copy-ready attribution text. Tracks can be browsed by genre, mood, tempo, or instrumentation.
- Open a track page.
- Click Download.
- Copy the exact attribution supplied for that track.
- Place it in the video description, podcast credits, or another reasonable credit location.
- Keep the track page and license with the project.
The free Creative Commons route generally requires attribution. Incompetech’s FAQ says its music can be used in monetized YouTube videos, streaming sites, and live productions when the creator is credited. The exact title and license version should always come from the individual track page.
Title — Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Best for: Documentary underscore, podcasts, education, livestreams, and video creators willing to provide attribution.
Creative Commons terms in plain English
Creative Commons is not one blanket permission. The letters attached to a track determine what you may do.
| Mark | Meaning | Documentary-project implication |
|---|---|---|
| BY | Attribution required | Credit the creator, title, source, and license. |
| SA | ShareAlike | Adaptations must be distributed under the same or a compatible license. |
| NC | NonCommercial | Do not use for commercial or monetized work. |
| ND | NoDerivatives | Do not distribute adapted versions; synchronization may require permission. |
| CC0 | Public-domain dedication tool | Copying, modification, distribution, and commercial use are intended to be allowed without copyright conditions, subject to other rights such as privacy, publicity, and trademarks. |
Creative Commons’ license guide recommends including the title, creator, source, and license. Credit does not cure a prohibited use: attribution cannot turn an NC track into commercial music or an ND track into permission for an edited soundtrack.

- Identify the copyright holder, artist, label, or uploader.
- Find the exact license attached to the individual track or recording.
- Check whether it allows commercial use.
- Check whether it allows synchronization with video or podcasts.
- Check whether editing, remixing, looping, or sampling is allowed.
- Check rules for redistribution inside games or apps, broadcast, public performance, and physical copies.
- Copy the required attribution or license certificate.
- Save the track URL, license URL, download date, and a screenshot or PDF of the permission.
- Download only through the official platform or rights-holder control.
Which license do you need for a documentary?
| Project | Look for | Good starting points |
|---|---|---|
| Personal listening | Authorized file download and portable format | Bandcamp, FMA, Jamendo, SoundCloud downloads |
| YouTube documentary | Synchronization permission, commercial-use permission if monetized, attribution instructions, and claim information | YouTube Audio Library, Mixkit, Pixabay, Incompetech, selected FMA and ccMixter tracks |
| Podcast | Permission for intro, outro, background use, repeated episodes, feeds, sponsorship, and monetization | Incompetech, ccMixter, FMA, Pixabay, Mixkit, selected Jamendo tracks |
| Client or commercial film | Explicit commercial synchronization rights and a record of permission | CC0, suitable CC BY, or a paid production-music license |
| Game or app | Interactive use, redistribution within the product, sublicensing, and platform distribution | Only sources whose license expressly covers these uses |
| Broadcast or physical release | Broadcast, public performance, manufacturing, and territory rights | A dedicated license; do not assume Mixkit or a fan download qualifies |
Common mistakes to avoid
- “There is a download button, so I can use it anywhere.” A button may authorize personal possession only.
- “Royalty-free means copyright-free.” Royalty-free normally describes payment terms while copyright and license restrictions remain.
- “Creative Commons means commercial use is allowed.” NC prohibits commercial use, ND restricts adaptations, and SA adds downstream licensing obligations.
- “Giving credit makes any use legal.” YouTube says credit alone is not enough to dispute a copyright claim.
- “A public-domain composition means the recording is public domain.” The composition and the particular performance are separate rights.
- “Offline listening means I own an MP3.” App-controlled offline caches are generally not exportable files.
- “A legal track cannot trigger Content ID.” Automated claims can still occur; preserve your license evidence and dispute only when you have the necessary rights.
- “The license will always be available later.” Save the file, track page, license, date, attribution, certificate, or invoice when you download.
What to avoid
Avoid generic MP3 mirrors, stream-ripping converters, fake download buttons, and sites offering new chart albums without identifying the copyright holder or license. These sites may expose you to malware, deceptive redirects, copyright infringement, or files that are not what they promise.
Do not rely on old lists that still recommend NoiseTrade as a current download service. Public references indicate that its downloads were discontinued, so it should not be treated as one of the strongest current options.
The bottom line
For an actual music library, begin with Bandcamp, Free Music Archive, Jamendo, SoundCloud’s official download control, or Internet Archive. For music to reuse in a documentary, podcast, or online video, begin with YouTube Audio Library, Mixkit, Pixabay Music, Incompetech, ccMixter, or a clearly licensed FMA or Jamendo track. Verify the individual license before publishing, and preserve proof of the permission you relied on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are free music downloads legal?
Yes, when the rights holder has enabled the download or the track is offered under a license permitting it. Legal download permission does not automatically grant permission to remix, synchronize, monetize, redistribute, broadcast, or use the track in a client project.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Can I download music from SoundCloud?
Only when the uploader has enabled SoundCloud’s official Download file control. If it is absent, treat the track as stream-only. SoundCloud’s mobile offline feature is not the same as receiving an exportable music file.
Is free Bandcamp music automatically cleared for YouTube videos?
Usually, a free Bandcamp download authorizes you to obtain the file for listening. It does not automatically grant permission to use that recording in a YouTube video, documentary, podcast, advertisement, game, or client project.
Is Creative Commons music always free for commercial use?
No. Creative Commons licenses differ. CC BY and CC BY-SA allow commercial use with conditions, while CC BY-NC prohibits commercial use and CC BY-ND restricts adapted versions.
Does public domain cover the recording?
No. The composition and the particular sound recording have separate rights. An old classical composition may be public domain while a modern orchestra’s recording remains protected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I monetize videos using free music?
Only if the individual license permits commercial use and synchronization. Monetization does not turn a personal-listening license into a commercial music license.
Do I need to credit the artist?
Follow the exact license. CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, CC BY-ND, and Incompetech’s free Creative Commons route require attribution. CC0 does not require attribution under the dedication, although credit is courteous. Mixkit’s free music says attribution is appreciated but not required.
What should I do if YouTube issues a Content ID claim?
Keep the track URL, license URL, download date, screenshot or PDF of the license, attribution text, and any certificate or invoice. If the claim is mistaken, use YouTube’s dispute process only when you have the necessary rights; credit or owning a copy alone is not enough.
Is offline listening the same as downloading?
No. A file download is an MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, or similar file saved to your device. Offline listening is often an encrypted, app-controlled cache that cannot be exported or used elsewhere.
Which site is best for MP3?
Bandcamp, Free Music Archive, Jamendo, and SoundCloud when the official download control is enabled are strong choices for MP3 files. Check the individual release or track because formats vary.
Which site is best for FLAC?
Bandcamp is the strongest general recommendation because artists may offer FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, and other formats. Availability depends on the individual release.
Which site is best for podcasts?
Incompetech, ccMixter, Free Music Archive, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, and selected Jamendo tracks are useful starting points, provided the license covers podcast synchronization, monetization, and repeated episodes.
Which site is safest for YouTube?
YouTube Audio Library is the safest first stop for YouTube-specific use. Mixkit, Pixabay, Incompetech, and suitable Creative Commons tracks can also work, but no external library can guarantee that automated systems will never generate a claim.
Which sites allow commercial use?
Look for CC0, suitable CC BY, or an explicit commercial-use production license. Selected FMA and ccMixter tracks may qualify; Mixkit and Pixabay depend on their custom terms; Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and Jamendo listener downloads should not be assumed to cover commercial reuse.
What free music sites should I avoid?
Avoid generic MP3 mirrors, stream-ripping converters, fake download buttons, and sites offering current chart music without rights information. Also treat old NoiseTrade recommendations as obsolete.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal “free music” license. Use artist-authorized sites for personal downloads, production libraries for background music, and Creative Commons or CC0 tracks only after checking the exact conditions. Download through the official site, credit when required, and save the license evidence.
