The correct order is simple: watch the four MCU movies with Captain America in the title in release order. That is also the chronological order for this focused franchise marathon:
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
All four were listed on Disney+ in the United States when checked on August 10, 2026. Their listed runtimes add up to approximately 525 minutes, or 8 hours 45 minutes, before breaks. The first three films center on Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans; Brave New World follows Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, after Sam succeeds Steve as Captain America.

Scope: This guide covers the four MCU movies with Captain America in the title—not every MCU movie in which Captain America appears.
The four Captain America movies in order
For these four films, there is no difference between release order and story order. The First Avenger establishes Steve Rogers, The Winter Soldier introduces Sam Wilson as Falcon, Civil War develops the conflict between Steve, Bucky Barnes and the institutions around them, and Brave New World presents Sam as the established successor to Steve.

1. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Steve Rogers begins as a physically frail but determined young man who wants to serve during World War II. After being selected for the Super Soldier program, he becomes Captain America and is drawn into a battle against HYDRA and its leader, the Red Skull. The story also establishes Steve’s lifelong relationship with Bucky Barnes, his romance with Peggy Carter and the Tesseract-related mythology that later MCU films develop.
Although much of the film is set in the 1940s, it is not entirely an isolated period adventure. Its framing and ending connect Steve’s wartime story to the modern-day MCU, which is why it belongs at the beginning of this watch order. Why it matters next: This is the foundation for Steve, Bucky, HYDRA and the Super Soldier legacy. Without it, the emotional stakes of The Winter Soldier and Civil War are considerably thinner.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Now living in the modern world, Steve takes on a threat that reaches into the heart of S.H.I.E.L.D. He works with Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, and meets Sam Wilson, an Air Force veteran who operates as the Falcon. The film also brings Bucky Barnes back into Steve’s life under circumstances that test Steve’s understanding of loyalty and identity.
Why it matters next: This is Sam Wilson’s MCU debut—not yet as Captain America, but as Falcon—and it establishes the friendship that eventually makes Steve’s choice of successor meaningful. It also develops Bucky, Brock Rumlow, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s internal corruption and Steve’s growing distrust of political institutions. 3. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark disagree over whether the Avengers should operate under government oversight. The dispute divides the heroes into opposing camps, with Steve defending Bucky and his principles while Tony supports greater institutional control. Sam remains one of Steve’s closest allies, and the film pushes the Steve-Bucky-Sam relationship into a much larger political and personal conflict.
Why it matters next: Civil War is officially a Captain America film, but it is also an Avengers-scale ensemble movie. Iron Man, Black Widow, Bucky, Falcon, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Vision, Hawkeye and War Machine all play important roles. Marvel’s official synopsis describes the Avengers splitting into opposing factions, so newcomers should expect something broader than a conventional solo superhero adventure.
The film also assumes that viewers know at least something about the Avengers. If you watch only the four Captain America-title movies, the central argument remains understandable, but the relationships and political fallout will have more weight if you have seen some of the related Avengers films first.

4. Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Sam Wilson has fully taken on the Captain America identity when he becomes involved in an international crisis after meeting President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford. The film is the fourth MCU movie carrying the Captain America name, but it is the first in the series to make Sam the title character rather than Steve Rogers.

Why it comes last: It follows the transfer of the shield and the Captain America mantle from Steve to Sam. Sam’s transition is developed most directly in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but that series is optional if you want only the movies. Disney’s official cast and character material identifies Sam’s succession and the film’s setup.
U.S. viewing: Brave New World was listed on Disney+ and, according to its JustWatch U.S. listing, was also available to rent or buy digitally through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home. The JustWatch URL retains the film’s earlier working title, Captain America: New World Order.
Credits note: Brave New World includes one scene after the end of the credits. Stay through the credits if you want to see every piece of the film; this guide does not reveal what happens.
Do you need to watch the entire MCU first?
No. The four Captain America-title films form a watchable, compact arc from Steve Rogers’ origin to Sam Wilson’s tenure. You will understand the basic succession even without watching every Marvel film.

There are, however, two places where extra context helps:
- Civil War: Its conflict grows out of the Avengers’ earlier missions and relationships, so the film feels larger and more emotionally grounded if you know the team beforehand.
- Brave New World: A movie-only viewer may notice that Steve is absent and Sam is already Captain America. Steve chooses Sam as his successor at the end of Avengers: Endgame, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier explores Sam’s hesitation and eventual acceptance of the role.
If you want the fastest route, watch the four films above. If Sam Wilson is your main reason for watching, add Avengers: Endgame and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before Brave New World. For the smoothest version of that route, use the expanded sequence below because Endgame itself follows Avengers: Infinity War.
The ideal expanded Captain America-adjacent watch order
This is not the complete MCU timeline. It is a selective route containing the major films and series needed to follow Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson through the handoff of the Captain America mantle.
- Captain America: The First Avenger — Steve’s origin, Bucky’s early relationship with Steve and the wartime roots of HYDRA.
- The Avengers — Steve joins the Avengers in the modern era and becomes part of the team dynamic that later fractures.
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier — Steve’s modern-day solo story and Sam Wilson’s introduction as Falcon.
- Avengers: Age of Ultron — The Avengers’ continuing relationship and the pressures that lead toward the political dispute in Civil War.
- Captain America: Civil War — Steve and Tony Stark split over government oversight, while Bucky and Sam become central to Steve’s side of the conflict.
- Avengers: Infinity War — The next major chapter in the Avengers’ story.
- Avengers: Endgame — The film that includes Steve’s decision to pass the Captain America mantle to Sam.
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — A six-episode Disney+ series about Sam and Bucky after Endgame, including Sam’s struggle to accept what the shield represents.
- Captain America: Brave New World — Sam’s next feature-film chapter as Captain America.
The expanded route takes roughly 20 hours of films in total, plus approximately five hours of television, depending on whether you watch all credits and how your service displays runtimes. It gives much more context for the Avengers’ political conflict, Bucky’s history and Sam’s relationship with Steve, but it is unnecessary for a quick four-film marathon.

Is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier part of the movie order?
No. It is a six-episode, one-season Disney+ series, not a Captain America movie. It should not be added to the answer of how many Captain America films there are, but it is the most direct screen bridge between Steve’s decision in Endgame and Sam’s status in Brave New World.
The series follows Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes after Endgame. Its main relevance here is Sam’s struggle with whether he can—or should—take on the Captain America mantle. Disney+ lists it as a one-season, six-episode series; you can find it through the official Disney+ listing. If you are doing the four-film-only marathon, skip it. If you want Sam’s transition to feel earned, watch it immediately before Brave New World.

No legitimate free, ad-supported option was listed for these four U.S. titles in the availability check. If you already subscribe to Disney+, it is the simplest way to watch the complete four-film set. A one-time digital rental may be more economical for a single marathon, while digital purchase or a physical disc makes more sense for repeated viewing or if you do not want to depend on changing streaming licenses.
Physical media is another durable option if you own, buy or borrow the relevant Blu-ray, 4K or DVD editions. Formats, stock and prices vary by retailer, so they should be checked separately rather than assumed from a streaming listing.

These are not Captain America solo-title films, so they do not belong in the main four-film count. They are relevant companion movies, particularly if you want to understand the Avengers’ relationships, the events leading into Civil War and Steve’s handoff of the shield to Sam. The distinction is also why Civil War can be both a Captain America film and, in practice, an Avengers ensemble story.
There are also earlier non-MCU screen adaptations. They include a 1944 live-action serial, two television movies from 1979 and a 1990 feature. These belong to separate continuities and are not required to understand the MCU’s Steve Rogers-to-Sam Wilson storyline.
