The best starting points were The Lowdown for a new crime drama, Task for prestige television, The Paper for comedy, Only Murders in the Building Season 5 for a returning favorite and Slow Horses Season 5 for espionage.
This is a U.S. streaming archive of the shows that premiered or released new seasons during September 2025; the dates below are not upcoming release dates. Because many September lists used the word new loosely, this guide labels each title as a new series, returning season, spinoff or split-season release. It also explains whether a season was available to binge, released weekly or split into multiple parts.
The quick answer: the 12 best September 2025 picks
The original Forbes September streaming roundup highlighted several highly visible releases, but it left out some of the month’s strongest critical and prestige-drama candidates. A more complete watchlist looks like this:
| Rank | Show | Type | U.S. service and release | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Lowdown | New series | FX September 23; Hulu September 24. Two episodes first, then weekly. | Best new drama |
| 2 | Task | New limited series | HBO and HBO Max September 7; weekly seven-episode run. | Prestige crime drama |
| 3 | The Paper | New series in The Office universe | Peacock September 4; all 10 episodes at launch. | Best new comedy and best binge |
| 4 | Only Murders in the Building Season 5 | Returning series | Hulu September 9; three episodes first, then weekly. | Mainstream mystery comedy |
| 5 | Slow Horses Season 5 | Returning series | Apple TV+ September 24; two episodes first, then weekly through October 22. | Spy thriller fans |
| 6 | House of Guinness | New historical drama | Netflix September 25; eight episodes at launch. | Historical family sagas |
| 7 | Black Rabbit | New limited series | Netflix September 18; eight-episode limited series. | Star-led crime drama |
| 8 | Wednesday Season 2, Part 2 | Returning series and split-season release | Netflix September 3; the final four episodes completed Season 2. | The month’s biggest mainstream event |
| 9 | Wayward | New limited series | Netflix September 25. | Psychological horror and cult thrillers |
| 10 | Chad Powers | New sports comedy | Hulu September 30; two episodes first, then weekly through October 28. | Light, accessible viewing |
| 11 | Alice in Borderland Season 3 | Returning international series | Netflix September 25. | Survival-game television |
| 12 | The Savant | New limited series | Apple TV+ September 26; two episodes first, then weekly through November 7. | Topical undercover thrillers |
The ranking is editorial rather than an objective measurement of quality. It weighs premise, creative pedigree, cast, critical evidence, accessibility and release convenience. For a retrospective, The Lowdown has the strongest post-release critical case: it later registered a 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic change, so they should be treated as time-sensitive.

The month’s strongest new series
The Lowdown — FX and Hulu
Premiere: September 23 on FX; September 24 on Hulu
Format: Two episodes at launch, followed by weekly episodes
Genre: Tulsa-set investigative noir
Watch if: You want a character-driven crime story with a strong regional identity.
Skip if: You are looking for a fast, conventional police procedural.
Created by Sterlin Harjo, The Lowdown stars Ethan Hawke as a citizen journalist investigating corruption in Tulsa. The series was the clearest omission from many early September roundups, and its eventual 98% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score made it the month’s most defensible critical standout in retrospect. The FX series page provides the official home for the show.
There is an important platform distinction: The Lowdown premiered on FX and arrived on Hulu the following day. It should not be described simply as a Hulu original. For viewers already paying for Hulu, the next-day streaming arrangement made it one of the month’s easiest prestige dramas to try without adding another subscription.
Task — HBO and HBO Max
Premiere: September 7
Format: Seven episodes released weekly
Genre: Crime limited series
Watch if: You liked Mare of Easttown or want a serious investigation with a strong ensemble.
Skip if: You prefer complete seasons available in one sitting.
Brad Ingelsby, the creator of Mare of Easttown, followed that series with Task, led by Mark Ruffalo. The story centers on a Philadelphia-area robbery investigation and the law-enforcement effort to identify the people behind a string of crimes. HBO announced the September 7 debut in its official release notice.
Task was one of September’s strongest prestige-drama bets before release and held a 77 Metacritic score in the contemporary September preview. It is a standalone limited series, so no previous-season preparation is required.
The Paper — Peacock
Premiere: September 4
Format: All 10 episodes released at launch
Genre: Workplace comedy
Watch if: You want a low-commitment comedy binge or are curious about the next chapter of The Office universe.
Skip if: You want the original Dunder Mifflin characters to return in full.
The Paper moves the documentary crew from The Office to a struggling newspaper in Toledo. Greg Daniels and Michael Koman developed the series, while Oscar Nuñez is the most prominent returning performer. The workplace, central cast and story are otherwise largely new. Peacock’s release announcement confirms both the premiere date and the full-season binge format.
The connection to The Office is useful context, not a viewing requirement. Familiarity with the earlier show may make the mockumentary format and documentary crew more immediately appealing, but The Paper is designed to establish its own workplace and characters. Do not expect Steve Carell or the original ensemble to anchor the series.
Black Rabbit — Netflix
Premiere: September 18
Format: Eight-episode limited series
Genre: Crime drama and family thriller
Watch if: Jude Law, Jason Bateman and stories about money, loyalty and organized crime appeal to you.
Skip if: You want a light comedy rather than a tense adult drama.
Jude Law and Jason Bateman play brothers whose New York restaurant becomes entangled with criminal activity. The star pairing gives Black Rabbit an immediate hook, while the restaurant setting separates it from the month’s many investigations and institutional dramas. Netflix introduced the series through its Tudum preview.
It is a good choice for viewers who want a compact, recognizable crime story without committing to several seasons. The retrospective critical picture was more mixed than the initial attention suggested: Metacritic listed a 63 score in the supplied research.

House of Guinness — Netflix
Premiere: September 25
Format: Eight episodes available at launch
Genre: Historical family drama
Watch if: You enjoy dynastic conflict, period settings and ambitious historical sagas.
Skip if: You want a documentary or a strictly factual account of the Guinness family.
Created by Steven Knight, House of Guinness follows four Guinness siblings after the death of their patriarch. It was one of September’s clearest alternatives to contemporary crime, newsroom and workplace stories. Netflix’s official preview establishes the family premise and release date.
The show is inspired by the real Guinness family but is a dramatized television series, not a documentary. Historical-drama viewers should expect interpretation, invented or compressed scenes and a narrative built for serialized television. Netflix’s related cast guide is useful for separating the real historical figures from the actors portraying them.
Wayward — Netflix
Premiere: September 25
Format: Limited series
Genre: Psychological thriller, horror and social commentary
Watch if: You like unsettling institutions, cult dynamics and apparently perfect communities hiding darker systems.
Skip if: You want a straightforward mystery with a conventional resolution.

Mae Martin and Toni Collette lead Wayward, which is set around a seemingly idyllic town and a school for so-called troubled teenagers. The premise makes it the strongest September choice for viewers interested in psychological horror and coercive social environments. Netflix details the plot and characters in its Tudum announcement.
The Girlfriend — Prime Video
Premiere: September 10
Format: Six episodes released at once
Genre: Psychological thriller
Watch if: You want a short, twist-oriented weekend watch led by Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke.
Skip if: You prefer an expansive world or a long-running ensemble.
Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke headline this compact psychological thriller about a mother and her son’s girlfriend. Its six-episode binge makes it especially useful for viewers who want a complete story without a weekly wait. The title appeared in the September 2025 television preview.
The major returning seasons
Wednesday Season 2, Part 2 — Netflix
Release: September 3
Format: Four final episodes of the eight-episode second season
Watch if: You want September’s biggest mass-audience television event.
Skip if: You have not watched Season 2, Part 1, or you dislike gothic teen fantasy.
Netflix released the final four episodes of Wednesday Season 2 on September 3, completing the season that began in two parts. It was the month’s most visible release, but it was not a brand-new series and not the beginning of a new season. Netflix’s official Season 2 information confirms the split structure.
This is a poor entry point for newcomers. Watch Season 2, Part 1 first, and preferably Season 1 as well. Any recap should be kept relatively spoiler-light because the series depends on ongoing mysteries and character developments.
Only Murders in the Building Season 5 — Hulu
Premiere: September 9
Format: Three episodes at launch, then weekly
Genre: Mystery comedy
Watch if: You want a familiar ensemble, comic murder investigation and a manageable weekly series.
Skip if: You are unwilling to catch up on several seasons of character history.
Charles, Oliver and Mabel returned to investigate the death of Arconia doorman Lester. Season 5 expands the trio’s world toward mobsters and wealthy power brokers while retaining the central combination of murder mystery, celebrity casting and comedy. Hulu’s official series page confirms the three-episode launch and weekly schedule.
Previous seasons are helpful rather than strictly mandatory. New viewers should at least know the trio, the Arconia and the basic pattern of earlier investigations. Returning viewers looking for a dependable comfort watch were among the clearest audiences for this season.
Slow Horses Season 5 — Apple TV+
Premiere: September 24
Format: Two episodes at launch, then weekly through October 22
Genre: Spy thriller
Watch if: You want sharp dialogue, institutional dysfunction and a continuing espionage story.
Skip if: You want a self-contained introduction to the series.

Season 5 of Slow Horses adapts Mick Herron’s novel London Rules and continues the story of MI5’s misfit agents. Apple’s episode and image announcement gives the release schedule. It was one of the strongest returning-drama recommendations omitted from the original Forbes-centered selection.
Season 5 is not an ideal starting point. Watch the earlier seasons, or at minimum Season 4, because the value comes from accumulated relationships, rivalries and consequences. For viewers already subscribed to Apple TV+, the two-episode launch followed by weekly episodes made it one of September’s best appointment watches.

Premiere: September 17
Format: One episode weekly through November 19
Genre: Glossy newsroom drama
Watch if: You enjoy Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and high-stakes media-industry storylines.
Skip if: You are seeking the month’s strongest critical consensus.
The fourth season of The Morning Show returned to Apple TV+ with its familiar newsroom power struggles and polished production. Apple announced the season through its official premiere release.
It belongs on a complete September guide because of its audience and cast, but it should not automatically be treated as a critical standout. The contemporary preview listed a 55 Metacritic score. That makes it a targeted recommendation for fans of the show rather than a universal first choice.
Tulsa King Season 3 — Paramount+
Premiere: September 21
Format: Weekly release
Genre: Crime comedy
Watch if: You want Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi navigating another criminal power struggle.
Skip if: You prefer grounded crime dramas over broad, star-driven entertainment.
Season 3 continues Dwight’s criminal operation while introducing a new rival family. Paramount+ announced the September 21 premiere in its official release notice.
As with Slow Horses, this is most rewarding for existing viewers. Seasons 1 and 2 establish Dwight’s relationships, business and conflicts, so Season 3 should not be presented as a beginner-friendly crime series.
Alice in Borderland Season 3 — Netflix
Premiere: September 25
Format: New season on Netflix
Genre: Japanese survival thriller and science fiction
Alice in Borderland remains the best September choice for viewers who want elaborate games, survival stakes and international genre television. Netflix announced Season 3 through Tudum.

Preparation is essential: Seasons 1 and 2 should be watched before Season 3. The show’s mysteries, relationships and game rules build across seasons, making this one of the least suitable titles for casual sampling from the latest episode.
Beauty in Black Season 2, Part 1 — Netflix
Release: September 11
Format: Split-season release
Genre: Serialized drama
Beauty in Black returned with the first part of its second season, rather than a complete new season. Netflix’s preview introduced the continuation. The split is important for viewers deciding whether to start now: Part 1 does not represent the full Season 2 viewing experience.

NCIS: Tony & Ziva — Paramount+
Premiere: September 4
Format: Three episodes at launch, then weekly through October 23

It is not simply another CBS-style procedural season; the streaming format and international setup give it a different rhythm. The Paramount release notice confirms the three-episode opening and subsequent weekly schedule. Knowledge of the parent series and the Tony/Ziva relationship makes it more rewarding, though the premise can be followed without having watched every NCIS season.
Chad Powers — Hulu
Premiere: September 30
Format: Two episodes at launch, then weekly; finale October 28
Genre: Sports comedy
Glen Powell leads this accessible football comedy, which arrived late enough in the month to become a natural lighter alternative after the heavier dramas. Hulu’s official page confirms the two-episode premiere and weekly schedule. No previous viewing is required.
The Savant — Apple TV+
Premiere: September 26
Format: Two episodes at launch, then weekly through November 7
Genre: Undercover thriller
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Apple describes the series as inspired by a reported real-world subject and a Cosmopolitan article in its first-look announcement. That wording matters: The Savant is a dramatized limited series, not a documentary account or a verified reconstruction of every event shown onscreen.
Mussolini: Son of the Century — MUBI
Premiere: September 10
Format: Eight episodes released weekly
Genre: Historical and political drama
For viewers who prefer serious historical television, Mussolini: Son of the Century offered an alternative to the month’s contemporary thrillers. It appeared in the September television preview. The key practical limitation is service access: MUBI requires a separate subscription in the U.S., so it is a poor reason to add the service unless you also want its broader film catalog.
Marvel Zombies — Disney+
Premiere: September 24
Format: Four-part limited animated series
Rating and genre: TV-MA Marvel horror
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Marvel Zombies belongs in a genre sidebar rather than at the top of a general list. It is adult animation with a TV-MA rating, not children’s programming simply because it carries the Marvel name. It is best suited to viewers who want superhero mythology filtered through horror.
English Teacher Season 2 — FX and Hulu
Premiere: September 25 on FX; September 26 on Hulu
Format: The complete 10-episode season available to binge on Hulu
Genre: Comedy
English Teacher was one of the month’s best options for comedy viewers who prefer not to wait weekly. Like The Lowdown, it has a network-to-streaming relationship: the FX premiere came first, followed by Hulu availability. The September preview identified the full Hulu season as a binge option.
Haunted Hotel — Netflix
Premiere: September 19

Genre: Adult animation and supernatural comedy

From Rick and Morty writer Matt Roller, Haunted Hotel follows a single mother running a hotel populated by ghosts. Netflix’s official Tudum page provides the premise. It is a useful recommendation for adult-animation viewers who have already exhausted the month’s more prominent live-action dramas.
Other binge and platform options
The Runarounds arrived on Prime Video September 1 with all eight episodes available to binge. Hotel Costiera also appeared on Prime Video September 24 as an optional international-flavored addition. These titles were less central to the month’s strongest overall recommendations, but they matter to viewers who want a full season immediately rather than another weekly commitment.

Netflix had the largest concentration of headline releases: Wednesday, Black Rabbit, House of Guinness, Wayward, Alice in Borderland, Beauty in Black and Haunted Hotel.
- Use Hulu for the strongest mix of weekly and binge options. Hulu carried Only Murders in the Building, the next-day streaming release of FX’s The Lowdown, Chad Powers and the complete second season of English Teacher.
- Choose Peacock for one clear comedy event. The Paper was Peacock’s most obvious September draw and its entire 10-episode season was available immediately.
- Choose Apple TV+ for a sustained weekly lineup. The Morning Show, Slow Horses and The Savant occupied separate parts of the month and continued into October or November.
- Use Max for a single prestige commitment. Task was a seven-episode weekly limited series, making it a focused option rather than a reason to maintain a large monthly watchlist.
- Do not add MUBI solely for one title unless you also want its film catalog. Mussolini: Son of the Century was a substantial historical drama, but MUBI is a separate subscription in the U.S.
Availability can differ outside the United States. Hulu, Max and Paramount+ use different international arrangements, and some Hulu titles appear on Disney+ in other territories. The dates and services in this guide are therefore specifically U.S. information.
What early September coverage got right and wrong
The high-profile lists were useful for identifying recognizable titles such as Wednesday, Only Murders in the Building, The Paper, The Morning Show, Tulsa King, Alice in Borderland, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, Beauty in Black and Chad Powers. But a list built only around those shows can give a misleading picture of the month.
Most importantly, it can omit Task, The Lowdown, Slow Horses Season 5, Black Rabbit, House of Guinness, Wayward, The Girlfriend, Mussolini: Son of the Century and The Savant. Those additions broaden the list beyond heavily promoted franchise titles and cover prestige drama, history, international television and limited-series viewing.
The word new also needs a label. A new season of an established show, a split-season release and a streaming spinoff are all legitimate reasons to watch, but they are not the same as a brand-new series. Similarly, saying that a title is streaming on Hulu or Max can obscure the difference between a network premiere and a next-day streaming arrival.
Finally, early previews cannot know the final critical consensus. A September 1 article should describe unreleased shows as anticipated or promising. A retrospective can incorporate later evidence, such as The Lowdown’s 98% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, while noting that The Paper and Black Rabbit had more mixed Metacritic results in the supplied research: 66 and 63 respectively. The contemporary preview listed Task at 77 and The Morning Show at 55. These numbers are snapshots, not permanent verdicts.
Bottom line
If you want one show from September 2025, start with The Lowdown. Choose Task for a serious weekly crime drama, The Paper for a complete comedy binge, Only Murders in the Building for a familiar mystery, and Slow Horses for the best returning spy thriller. Netflix supplied the month’s biggest event with Wednesday Season 2, Part 2, while House of Guinness, Black Rabbit and Wayward gave subscribers three very different reasons to stay with the service.
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the best new TV show streaming in September 2025?
For a retrospective recommendation, The Lowdown has the strongest case among the brand-new series. It premiered on FX on September 23, arrived on Hulu on September 24 and later earned a 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Task is the better choice for viewers seeking a more conventional prestige crime limited series.
Was The Paper a continuation of The Office?
The Paper is set in The Office universe and retains the documentary premise, but it moves to a struggling Toledo newspaper with a largely new workplace and cast. Oscar Nuñez returns, but Steve Carell and the original ensemble do not anchor the series. You can watch it without revisiting The Office.

The clearest binge options were The Paper on Peacock, House of Guinness on Netflix, The Girlfriend on Prime Video and The Runarounds on Prime Video. English Teacher Season 2 was also available as a complete 10-episode season on Hulu.
Which shows required earlier seasons?
Wednesday Season 2, Part 2 requires Season 2, Part 1; Alice in Borderland Season 3 requires Seasons 1 and 2; and Slow Horses Season 5 and Tulsa King Season 3 are best watched after their earlier seasons. Previous seasons of Only Murders in the Building and NCIS are helpful but less essential.
Are these release dates worldwide?
No. The calendar is for U.S. availability. Hulu, Max, Paramount+ and other services use different international distribution arrangements, and some Hulu shows are released through Disney+ in other territories.
The Bottom Line
Best overall new drama: The Lowdown. Best prestige crime series: Task. Best comedy binge: The Paper. Best returning comedy: Only Murders in the Building Season 5. Best returning thriller: Slow Horses Season 5. Biggest Netflix event: Wednesday Season 2, Part 2. Because September 2025 has passed, treat this as an archive of the month’s U.S. releases rather than a current schedule.
