Wicked (2024) runs 2 hours 40 minutes, or 160 minutes. The ordinary single-film theatrical presentation does not include a scheduled intermission, so families should plan for at least 2 hours 40 minutes once the feature itself begins, plus trailers, advertisements, seating, concessions, and bathroom time.
At a glance:
- Runtime: 2 hours 40 minutes / 160 minutes
- U.S. rating: PG for some scary action, thematic material and brief suggestive material
- Regular movie-theater break: No
- Story: The first part of a two-film adaptation, ending at the stage musical’s first-act climax
- Main content concern: Frightening flying-monkey transformations and chase scenes, alongside themes of bullying, discrimination, animal persecution, and family rejection
This guide is about Wicked, the 2024 film starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande—not the separate 2025 sequel, Wicked: For Good. The film is family-accessible in tone, but its PG rating does not tell parents how a particular child will respond to its length, intense fantasy danger, or heavier themes.

How long is Wicked exactly?
The feature runtime of Wicked (2024) is 2 hours 40 minutes, or 160 minutes. That is the official runtime listed by Universal.
The 160-minute figure refers to the film itself. It does not include the advertisements and trailers shown before the feature, or the time your family spends parking, buying snacks, finding seats, and using the restroom. A posted 7 p.m. showtime therefore does not necessarily mean you will be walking out at 9:40 p.m.

If bedtime, medication, transportation, or another appointment matters, calculate backward from the likely exit time rather than treating the listed showtime as the beginning of the entire theater visit. A three-hour block is a safer planning cushion for many families, but the exact total varies by theater and screening.
Does Wicked have an intermission?
No—not in an ordinary single-film showing. The movie does not stop for a normal Broadway-style interval. It continues through the first-act climax, the performance of “Defying Gravity,” and then into the ending and credits.
That can be confusing for people familiar with the stage musical. The official Broadway production runs approximately 2 hours 45 minutes including a 15-minute intermission, according to the official Broadway FAQ. In other words:
| Version | Total time | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|
| Wicked film | 160 minutes | No regular scheduled break |
| Broadway performance only | About 150 minutes | The film is about 10 minutes longer than the stage performance excluding its interval |
| Full Broadway theater event | About 165 minutes | The film is about 5 minutes shorter than the stage show including its 15-minute break |
So it is inaccurate to say simply that the movie is 10 minutes longer than the entire Broadway production. That comparison leaves out the stage show’s intermission.
A theater could add a break for a special event, sing-along event, or Wicked/Wicked: For Good double feature, but families should not assume that an ordinary screening will have one. There is also no official bathroom point that applies to every theater. If leaving quickly may be necessary, choose an aisle seat or a seat near an exit.
How much time should a family budget for the theater?
Use the following as a practical planning checklist:
- Start with 160 minutes for the feature. This is the non-negotiable part of the schedule.
- Add the theater’s advertisements and trailers. Their length differs by venue and can change from one screening to another.
- Arrive early enough for the bathroom and seats. A child who needs a predictable restroom break should use it before the film begins, not wait for an intermission that will not come.
- Plan concessions deliberately. Large drinks can create an avoidable bathroom emergency, although children should still have their normal food and hydration.
- Work backward from the exit time. This is particularly important for a late screening or a child with a strict bedtime.
Parents should also allow for the possibility that the child will want to leave during a loud or frightening scene. An aisle seat reduces disruption and makes a quick exit easier. At home, the film can be paused; in a theater, the family has to choose between missing part of the story and staying through an uncomfortable moment.
Is Wicked appropriate for children?
In the United States, Wicked is rated PG for “some scary action, thematic material and brief suggestive material,” according to Universal’s listing. The Motion Picture Association’s explanation of PG says parents should investigate the film because some material may be unsuitable for younger children. PG is not a minimum viewing age and is not a guarantee that every child will find the movie comfortable.

Independent age guidance is somewhat more specific, but it should be treated as editorial advice rather than a rule:
| Child or family situation | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Preschool and early elementary children | Often a difficult fit because of the 160-minute length, lack of a break, and intense late-film material. |
| Ages 6–8 | Consider the child’s sensitivity to animals in distress, frightening creatures, loud danger, bullying, and stories involving rejection or death. |
| Ages 9–10 and older | Often a more manageable age range, but children still vary considerably in stamina and sensitivity. |
| Musical-theater fans of any age | They may enjoy the songs and performances, but enthusiasm for the musical does not necessarily make the flying-monkey scenes or darker themes easy. |
Common Sense Media gives the film an editorial recommendation of age 10+. Children and Media Australia assesses it as not suitable under 6, requiring parental guidance for ages 6–8, and generally acceptable for age 9 and over. That is Australian media guidance, not a U.S. legal restriction or MPA classification.
The best question is not simply, “How old is my child?” It is whether the child can sit through a long, uninterrupted musical and how they respond to specific triggers. A child may be emotionally ready for the themes but unable to manage 160 minutes without a break. Another child may have excellent movie stamina but become very upset by animals being harmed or transformed.
What may frighten or upset children?
Spoiler-light warning: the most intense material involves flying monkeys or ape-like guards. The movie also contains loud magical and mechanical imagery, fire, pursuit, and recurring discrimination against animals and outsiders.

For parents who need more detail before deciding, the following are the main concerns. The list draws on the BBFC content advice, Common Sense Media’s parents’ guide, and Children and Media Australia’s review.
- Flying-monkey transformation: flying monkeys or ape guards are subjected to a painful magical transformation. Their distress and altered appearance may be upsetting to children who fear monkeys, monsters, or body transformation.
- Chase and jump-scare material: the transformed creatures chase people, crash through windows, and try to grab them. One window attack works as a sudden jump scare.
- The Wizard’s mechanical head: a giant mechanical face, booming voice, glowing eyes, and bursts of flame may frighten younger viewers.
- Fire and falling: a hot-air balloon catches fire and falls.
- Weapons and pursuit: guards chase characters while carrying swords and other weapons.
- Animals in captivity and danger: animals are caged, removed from classrooms, persecuted, and treated as inferior. A baby lion is shown frightened in a cage.
- Death and rejection: the story refers to a mother dying in childbirth and to a child being abandoned or rejected.
- Bullying and emotional conflict: characters experience humiliation, screaming, arguments, social exclusion, magical property damage, and public hostility.
The visual presentation matters. A child who is comfortable with the theatrical version may find the movie’s creature transformations and close-up chase sequences more immediate. Common Sense Media specifically notes that some moments can be scarier on screen than on stage.
Is there sex, romance, language, or substance use?
The film does not contain an explicit sex scene, but PG does not mean that there is no mature or suggestive material.
- Characters flirt, dance, embrace, and kiss.
- An affair is implied through dancing and embracing, followed by a childbirth sequence.
- Some outfits and dancing are suggestive, but the MPA describes the material as brief.
- Language is limited mainly to insults and mild fantasy-world expressions.
- An unidentified green elixir and another unidentified liquid are briefly consumed.
For most families, these elements are less likely to be the deciding issue than the movie’s length, animal distress, scary action, and themes of persecution.

What themes might require a conversation afterward?
Wicked is not just a light retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Its story asks how societies label people as dangerous, how authority uses fear, and how prejudice can be made to look respectable. Parents may want to discuss:
- Bullying and social exclusion: characters are judged, mocked, humiliated, or pushed outside the accepted group.
- Prejudice based on appearance: physical difference, including green skin, becomes an excuse for mistreatment.
- Disability discrimination: Nessarose is treated with condescension and is not always allowed the dignity or independence she deserves.
- Animal persecution: intelligent animals are silenced, removed from education, confined, and treated as less important.
- Propaganda and scapegoating: people in power help create a public enemy and manipulate public fear.
- Power and moral compromise: characters must decide what they will accept in exchange for popularity, safety, or influence.
- Family rejection and favoritism: parental expectations and unequal treatment shape the characters’ choices.
- Friendship, empathy, and self-worth: the film also explores whether people can look beyond reputation and appearance.
A classroom discussion guide for the film identifies friendship, family, social justice, bullying, discrimination, and power as central issues. That makes the movie useful for discussion, but it also means the emotional content is more substantial than a simple fantasy adventure.
Is Wicked suitable for a child who likes The Wizard of Oz?
Familiarity with the 1939 classic is helpful for recognizing Oz, the Wizard, flying monkeys, and other imagery, but it does not guarantee that a child will be comfortable with this film.
Wicked uses familiar fantasy ideas while showing some of them with more detailed, realistic-looking transformations and chase sequences. A child who laughs at the flying monkeys in the classic movie may still react strongly to the painful transformation and window attack here. Conversely, a child who dislikes long stretches of singing may lose interest before the most frightening material appears.

Ask the child about the specific elements they dislike—not merely whether they like The Wizard of Oz. Fear of monkeys, monsters, loud mechanical faces, fire, or sudden attacks is more relevant than familiarity with the setting.
Does the movie tell the complete story?
No. Wicked (2024) adapts the first act of the stage musical. It ends at the equivalent of the stage show’s first-act curtain point, after the major climax, rather than resolving the entire story.
The conclusion continues in the separate sequel, Wicked: For Good. The official sequel is listed by Universal. Families expecting one complete, self-contained movie may be disappointed if they do not know beforehand that the adaptation is divided into two films. Calling it the first half is useful shorthand, but it does not mean the two films are necessarily equal in screen time.
The 2024 film was released theatrically in the United States on November 22, 2024. Universal’s home-entertainment announcement listed digital purchase or rental for December 31, 2024, and physical release for February 4, 2025. Those dates explain why older articles may describe the movie or its sequel as upcoming; they should not be read as current release language.
What if a child cannot sit through 160 minutes?
Home viewing may be the better choice for a child who needs flexibility, provided the family has access to a legitimate home edition in its country. At home, parents can:
- pause for a bathroom break without missing dialogue;
- lower the volume before a loud or frightening sequence;
- explain the flying-monkey material before it begins;
- stop after a difficult scene and check whether the child wants to continue; and
- watch the film in two sittings if the child is emotionally ready but lacks the stamina for one uninterrupted session.
Universal’s home release includes bonus material and a sing-along version, so distinguish the 160-minute feature runtime from the total time represented by menus, extras, or additional versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Small runtime differences between versions
The standard listing is 160 minutes, but special formats can display slightly different figures. BBFC listings show a theatrical sing-along version at approximately 160 minutes 51 seconds, while some 3D and ScreenX listings run just under 160 minutes. U.S. ticket listings may continue to show the standard 160-minute figure. These small differences do not create an intermission or materially change the family’s scheduling decision.
The same caution applies to Wicked: For Good. The BBFC lists the 2025 sequel at approximately 137 minutes, but that is a U.K. classification record and may not match every regional or special-edition listing. Do not confuse that runtime with the 160-minute first film.

A theater showing is more likely to work if the child:
- can usually manage a two-hour-plus film without a planned break;
- enjoys musicals and extended song sequences;
- can handle fantasy danger and the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz;
- is unlikely to be overwhelmed by animals in distress, loud machinery, fire, or jump scares;
- can cope with themes of bullying, prejudice, captivity, family rejection, and public fear; and
- understands that the movie ends before the larger story is complete.
Consider waiting or watching at home if the child:
- is highly sensitive to animals being hurt, frightened, caged, or transformed;
- fears monkeys, monsters, giant faces, fire, or sudden attacks;
- becomes restless during long films;
- needs predictable bathroom access or the ability to pause;
- finds unresolved endings especially frustrating; or
- is likely to be upset by stories about discrimination, propaganda, parental rejection, or death.
For a theater trip, use the bathroom immediately beforehand, avoid assuming there will be an interval, and choose aisle or exit-adjacent seating if leaving may be necessary. Prepare children by explaining that the most intense creature material comes late in the film, without promising that a particular song will provide a reliable bathroom opportunity.

The runtime and U.S. rating come from Universal’s official film page. The Broadway comparison comes from the official Broadway FAQ. The content warnings and alternative age guidance are linked above from the BBFC, Common Sense Media, and Children and Media Australia.
The MPA rating applies to the United States. Other countries use different classification systems and descriptors, so parents outside the U.S. should check their local classification authority rather than treating PG as a universal age label.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many minutes is Wicked (2024)?
The feature runs 160 minutes, or 2 hours 40 minutes.
Is there an intermission in the Wicked movie?
There is no regular intermission in an ordinary single-film theatrical showing. A special double feature or event screening might add a break, but families should not assume one.
Is Wicked scarier than The Wizard of Oz?
That depends on the child, but the movie presents frightening material—especially the flying-monkey transformation and chase sequences—with detailed screen effects and sound. A child comfortable with the classic film may still find these scenes intense.
What age is Wicked appropriate for?
The U.S. rating is PG, which is guidance rather than a minimum age. Common Sense Media recommends it for age 10+, while Children and Media Australia says it is not suitable under 6, needs parental guidance for ages 6–8, and is generally acceptable for age 9 and older. Individual sensitivity and movie stamina matter more than any single number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs Wicked the complete story?
No. The 2024 film adapts the stage musical’s first act and ends at its first-act climax. The story continues in the separate sequel, Wicked: For Good.
How long is Wicked: For Good?
The BBFC lists the 2025 sequel at approximately 137 minutes. That is a U.K. classification listing and should not be confused with the 160-minute runtime of Wicked (2024).
Is the Broadway show longer than the movie?
The Broadway production runs approximately 2 hours 45 minutes including a 15-minute intermission. The movie runs 2 hours 40 minutes without a normal break, so the film is about 10 minutes longer than the stage performance itself but about 5 minutes shorter than the complete Broadway theater event.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat Wicked as a 160-minute, no-intermission movie with a late sequence involving frightening flying-monkey transformations, not simply as a light version of The Wizard of Oz. Children who enjoy long musicals and can handle fantasy danger may have a wonderful time; children who are sensitive to animal distress, loud scares, discrimination themes, or unresolved endings may be better served by a prepared home viewing.
