As of August 9, 2026, the 2025 horror film is included with eligible Netflix plans, and it is also available to rent or buy digitally through Amazon Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play Movies, and other services. The current major-store snapshot is approximately $5.99 to rent in 4K or $14.99 to buy in 4K, although prices and formats can change.
If you already subscribe to Netflix, that is the simplest option. For one viewing, a $5.99 rental is generally the cheapest choice. A $14.99 digital purchase makes more sense for repeat viewings, while a 4K UHD or Blu-ray edition is the better fit for collectors and viewers who want disc-based access.
Where to watch 28 Years Later in the U.S.
The table below separates subscription streaming from transactional video-on-demand. “Available on digital” does not automatically mean that a movie is free with a subscription: renting, buying, and streaming through a subscription are different types of access.
| Service | How it is available | Current observed price or quality | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Subscription streaming | Included with an eligible plan | Netflix’s official guide identifies Standard and Premium access. The title’s availability on the ad-supported tier should be checked while signed in. |
| Amazon Video / Prime Video | Rent or buy | About $5.99 to rent UHD; $14.99 to buy UHD | The listing presents paid movie-store options; a standard Amazon Prime membership should not be assumed to include the film. |
| Apple TV Store | Rent or buy | About $5.99 to rent; $14.99 to buy; 4K listing | An Apple Account is required. Apple’s rental rules give viewers 30 days to start and 48 hours to finish after playback begins. |
| Fandango at Home | Rent or buy | About $5.99 to rent; $14.99 to buy in current aggregator data | Check the title page for the exact rental window, resolution, bonus content, and Movies Anywhere eligibility. |
| Google Play Movies | Rent or buy | About $5.99 to rent in 4K; $14.99 to buy in 4K | Google lists browser and supported-device playback. Actual output depends on the device, app, connection, and account. |
| Sony Pictures Core | Rent or buy | Price varies by account, device, and territory | No PlayStation Plus membership is required to rent or buy, but availability and formats vary. |
| DIRECTV On Demand | Rent or buy through DIRECTV | Price not exposed in the available page listing | Requires compatible DIRECTV access and equipment or service. |
There was no free legal U.S. streaming option listed in the availability check. Availability and prices were checked on August 9, 2026; retailer listings can change without notice. The JustWatch U.S. listing is useful for checking the latest combination of services and prices, but readers should confirm the final price on the retailer’s own checkout page.

What is the cheapest way to watch it?
- Already have Netflix: stream it there without an additional per-film charge, provided the title is available on your plan.
- Watching once: rent it digitally for approximately $5.99.
- Expecting multiple viewings: buy the digital version for approximately $14.99.
- Want a long-term physical copy: compare the prices of the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions.
Signing up for Netflix solely to watch this one film is not automatically cheaper than renting it. Netflix’s current U.S. prices are $8.99 per month for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard, and $26.99 for Premium, according to Netflix’s plan information. A new subscriber who only wants 28 Years Later would generally spend less on a $5.99 rental. A subscription can offer better value if the viewer also plans to watch several other Netflix titles during the billing period.
Is 28 Years Later on Netflix?
Yes, in the United States. Netflix’s official title page identifies 28 Years Later as a 2025, 1-hour-55-minute, R-rated horror film. Netflix’s own release guide says the film is available with its Standard or Premium plans; the guide does not establish universal access on every tier in every account configuration.
Netflix separately warns that some titles may be unavailable on the ad-supported plan because of licensing restrictions. Those titles can display a lock icon. For that reason, the safest wording is: Netflix currently lists the film in the U.S., with the official guide identifying Standard and Premium access; check the title page from your signed-in account before subscribing or changing plans.
The distinction matters:
- Netflix subscription streaming: watch the film as part of an eligible Netflix plan.
- Digital rental: pay a one-time fee and watch during the retailer’s rental period.
- Digital purchase: receive account-based library access under the retailer’s terms.
- Prime Video: the film may appear in Prime Video search results, but its current listing shows paid rent-and-buy options rather than automatic inclusion with a standard Prime membership.
Which Netflix plan gives the best picture?
| Netflix plan | Current U.S. monthly price | Listed resolution | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99 | 1080p | Netflix says selected titles can be restricted because of licensing. Verify the film on the account’s title page. |
| Standard | $19.99 | 1080p | Netflix’s official 28 Years Later guide identifies Standard access. |
| Premium | $26.99 | 4K HDR | Required for Netflix’s 4K HDR tier under the current plan structure. |
For the best Netflix picture, Premium is the relevant plan, but a Premium subscription alone does not guarantee 4K playback. The display, streaming device, app, internet connection, title license, and compatible HDMI or playback setup also matter. Netflix’s general information is available through its plan page and its explanation of ad-supported plan restrictions.

Current U.S. transactional listings identify 28 Years Later as available in 4K on Google Play and major digital stores. The Apple TV listing identifies English Dolby Atmos audio, while the Movies Anywhere listing identifies 4K and HDR support.
Those labels describe the available version, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive that quality. Before paying for a 4K version, check:
- whether your television, monitor, streaming box, or game console supports 4K and HDR;
- whether the service’s app supports 4K on that particular device;
- whether your internet connection is fast and stable enough for high-resolution streaming;
- whether your account and retailer license include the 4K version;
- whether the audio system supports Dolby Atmos or another advertised format.
Subtitles, captions, dubbed audio, and audio-language choices can also differ by retailer. Open the specific listing rather than assuming that every store offers identical language and accessibility options.

Digital rental rules: when does the viewing period begin?
Rental policies vary by retailer, but the common pattern is a period to start the movie followed by a shorter period to finish it. The exact title terms should be checked before payment.

Apple TV rentals
According to Apple’s rental guidance, you have 30 days to begin watching a rental. Once playback starts, the rental remains available for 48 hours. Apple supports streaming and downloads on eligible devices, although rentals cannot be downloaded directly to an Apple TV, smart TV, or streaming device.
Sony Pictures Core rentals
Sony Pictures Core uses the same basic timing for this service: renters have 30 days to initiate playback, followed by 48 hours to finish after starting. A purchase is added to the account library and remains accessible while the account can use the service.
Fandango at Home and other stores
Do not assume that Apple’s or Sony’s rules apply everywhere. Older Fandango at Home/Vudu documentation describes a general 30-day period to start and commonly 24 or 48 hours after playback begins, but studio and title-specific terms can differ. Check the checkout screen or the movie’s detail page, especially if you are not planning to watch immediately.
Can you download 28 Years Later?
Sometimes, depending on the service and device.
- Apple TV: Apple supports downloads of eligible purchases and rentals on supported Apple devices and computers, subject to the rental period. Rentals cannot be downloaded directly to an Apple TV, smart TV, or streaming device.
- Netflix: downloads depend on the plan, title, device, and Netflix’s current download rules.
- Google Play: the official listing identifies browser and supported-device playback; download availability should be confirmed in the Google TV or Play Movies app on the device being used.
A digital purchase is not a DRM-free video file. It is licensed access connected to a retailer account. If a service changes its catalog, app support, or account terms, access is governed by those terms rather than by traditional ownership of a disc.

Does the digital purchase include bonus features?
The Movies Anywhere page lists five bonus featurettes:
- “Days to Years” — 6 minutes
- “Capturing the Chaos” — 5 minutes
- “The Survivors” — 5 minutes
- “Becoming the Infected” — 5 minutes
- “Behind the Cameras” — 7 minutes
That is approximately 28 minutes of listed bonus material. Extras are not guaranteed to be identical across Amazon, Apple, Fandango at Home, Google, Sony Pictures Core, and physical editions. A retailer may offer a different package depending on the purchase method, resolution, territory, or studio license. Check the listing for an “Extras,” “Bonus,” or “Special Features” section before buying if the behind-the-scenes material is important to you.

Can a digital purchase move between platforms?
28 Years Later has an official Movies Anywhere page. Movies Anywhere can connect qualifying purchases from participating retailers to one collection, allowing an eligible purchase to appear on linked services. Its terms of use explain the connected-retailer framework.
However, do not treat this as a guarantee that every purchase will appear everywhere. Before buying, look for the Movies Anywhere logo and confirm that:
- the retailer and account are participating;
- the specific title and format qualify;
- the resolution will transfer as expected;
- bonus features, HDR, Dolby Atmos, and language options are included on the connected service.
Movies Anywhere can make a digital library more flexible, but retailer pricing, playback rights, and title-specific license terms still control the purchase.
Should you buy the 4K UHD or Blu-ray instead?
Sony’s official movie page lists the film as available on Blu-ray and digital. Current retailer and aggregator listings also show DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD editions, with prices varying by seller, edition, packaging, and promotion.
Physical media may be the better choice if you:
- want a disc-based backup that is not dependent on a streaming catalog;
- care about the highest possible disc bitrate rather than compressed streaming;
- plan to watch the movie repeatedly;
- want collector packaging or edition-specific special features;
- prefer not to maintain a Netflix subscription or rely on a digital retailer account.
A 4K UHD disc still requires a compatible 4K Blu-ray player and display. Blu-ray is usually a less expensive physical alternative, while DVD is the broadest compatibility option but does not provide the same picture quality.

The film’s original digital release was a premium video-on-demand release on July 29, 2025. At that stage, “available on digital” meant that viewers could pay to rent or buy it through online movie stores; it did not mean that the film was included with Netflix or another subscription. Netflix access followed on September 20, 2025.

Is 28 Years Later free on Netflix?

Is 28 Years Later included with Amazon Prime?
The current Prime Video listing presents the film as a paid rental or purchase. A standard Amazon Prime membership should not be assumed to include it at no extra charge.
How long do I have to watch a digital rental?
Apple and Sony Pictures Core specify 30 days to start the rental and 48 hours to finish after playback begins. Other retailers can use different terms, so check the individual listing before renting.
