Prime Video’s U.S. ad-free option is no longer called “Ad Free.” Since April 10, 2026, Amazon has marketed it as Prime Video Ultra. The change is more than a name refresh: the plan now combines ad-free viewing with higher streaming, download, and audio limits—but those benefits apply only where the title and subscription support them.
For documentary viewers, the most important question is not simply whether Ultra removes commercials. It is whether the particular film, series, channel, or live program you want to watch is eligible for the plan.
1. Prime Video Ultra costs extra
In the United States, Prime Video Ultra costs $4.99 per month on top of a Prime or Prime Video subscription. Customers with an annual Prime membership can also choose an annual Ultra plan for $45.99.
The underlying Prime membership still costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Ultra is therefore not a replacement for Prime; it is an add-on for viewers who want expanded Prime Video features.

That makes Ultra most useful for people who watch Prime Video regularly. If you only use Amazon to rent an occasional documentary, the add-on may not affect that rental and may not represent good value.
2. Ultra adds several features beyond removing ads
Amazon’s U.S. plan includes the following limits and formats for eligible Prime Video content:
- Up to five concurrent streams
- Up to 100 offline downloads
- 4K/UHD playback
- Dolby Atmos audio
- Ad-free viewing for eligible content
The five-stream and 100-download limits apply across all profiles on the account, not separately to each person. A household could therefore reach the limit faster than expected if several people are downloading films or watching at the same time. Individual titles, devices, and providers can also impose lower limits.
For documentary fans, 4K can make a noticeable difference in productions built around landscapes, wildlife, archival restoration, or detailed location footage. It is not automatic, however. The documentary must be available in 4K, and the television, streaming device, connection, and playback settings must support it. Dolby Atmos likewise requires compatible equipment and a soundtrack mixed for the format.

Amazon says 4K/UHD is now exclusive to Ultra in the U.S. The standard Prime Video benefit continues to include HD, HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. A title’s availability can vary, so check its detail page rather than assuming that a Prime label guarantees every format.
3. “Ad-free” does not cover every Prime Video listing
Ultra removes ads from eligible Prime Video content, but the label should not be read as a promise that every video inside the Prime Video app will play without advertising.
Ads may still appear in:
- Live television
- Sports programming
- Free ad-supported programming
- Some add-on subscriptions
This matters when searching for documentaries because Prime Video brings together several types of content: titles included with Prime, free ad-supported programs, rentals and purchases, and third-party subscriptions. They do not all follow the same playback rules.
Before starting a film, inspect the title’s detail page for labels such as “watch with ads” or “with ads.” Those labels are a better guide than the general name of the plan. Promotional trailers may also play before some movies and shows. They can be skipped, but Ultra does not remove them.

Ultra also does not turn paid rentals, purchases, or unrelated channel subscriptions into titles included with Prime. It changes the advertising and feature treatment where the subscription is eligible; it does not provide universal access to the entire Prime Video catalog.
4. You can subscribe or cancel from several places
The exact account menu can vary by device and billing arrangement. On the Prime Video website, Amazon lists these paths:
Subscribe on the website
- Open Prime Video and sign in.
- Go to Your Account.
- Select Go Ad Free.
- Choose Start Subscription.
Although the menu may still say “Go Ad Free,” the U.S. plan itself is now called Prime Video Ultra.
Subscribe on a supported TV or connected-device app
- Open Settings.
- Choose Prime.
- Select Go Ad Free.
- Choose Start Subscription.
Cancel on the website
- Go to Your Account.
- Select Cancel Ad Free.
- Confirm the cancellation.
Cancel on Android, iOS, or Fire Tablet
- Open Settings.
- Choose Prime & Subscriptions.
- Select Cancel Ad Free.
After cancellation, the subscription remains available until the end of the current billing cycle. If Apple bills the subscription, cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid another charge. A subscription purchased through another provider may need to be managed through that provider rather than through Amazon.

Should documentary viewers pay for Ultra?
Ultra makes the clearest case for itself when you regularly watch included Prime Video documentaries, use offline downloads, share the account with several viewers, or have a 4K television and compatible audio setup. The annual $45.99 option also costs less than paying $4.99 every month for a full year.
It is less compelling if most of your viewing consists of rentals, purchases, live programming, or third-party channels. Those categories may still carry ads or separate charges, and Ultra does not change the access rules for them. Check the labels on the documentaries you actually watch before subscribing.

Does Prime Video Ultra remove all ads?
No. Ads can still appear in live TV, sports, free ad-supported programming, and some add-on subscriptions. Promotional trailers before some movies and shows can also appear, although they can be skipped.
How do I cancel Prime Video Ultra?
On the website, go to Your Account, choose Cancel Ad Free, and confirm. On Android, iOS, and Fire Tablet, use Settings, Prime & Subscriptions, and Cancel Ad Free. Apple-billed subscriptions should be canceled at least 24 hours before renewal.
