There is no verified nationwide date for shutting down every AT&T U-verse service. The answer depends on which product you have. U-verse TV remains documented and supported for existing customers, while older U-verse Internet and DSL service is being phased out in areas where AT&T retires its copper network.
That distinction matters because “U-verse” was used for television, broadband, and voice products. A notice about copper-network retirement does not automatically mean that every U-verse TV account is being canceled.
What is actually being discontinued?
AT&T’s current position breaks into two separate situations:

AT&T says it is working toward powering down most of its copper network by the end of 2029. That is a broad infrastructure goal, not a single date on which every U-verse customer will lose service.

Is U-verse TV being shut down?
There is no verified nationwide termination date for U-verse TV. AT&T’s support material continues to include U-verse TV package information, cancellation instructions, DVR guidance, and service terms for existing customers.
That does not necessarily mean U-verse TV is open to new subscribers everywhere. AT&T does not present a universal nationwide signup promise, so availability must be checked by address. The safe conclusion is narrower: existing U-verse TV service continues to be documented and supported, but customers should not assume that the product is available for new installation in every market.
AT&T’s U-verse TV price-change notice lists increases beginning on or after June 25, 2026. The listed monthly increases include:

Price increases are not proof that a service is about to disappear. In this case, AT&T attributes the changes to higher programming costs.

AT&T completed the sale of its remaining 70% stake in DIRECTV to TPG on July 2, 2025. The former AT&T video business, including U-verse TV, is therefore operated under the DIRECTV business rather than remaining an AT&T-owned video segment.

This change in ownership did not automatically cancel existing U-verse TV accounts. It does mean that older articles and customer assumptions can be misleading. A current AT&T support page does not mean AT&T still owns the entire video operation, and the DIRECTV transaction does not mean that every U-verse television receiver is being disconnected.
What is happening to U-verse Internet and DSL?
The outlook is more definite for older broadband connections. AT&T’s current DSL information says that AT&T no longer offers DSL service. Separately, AT&T is retiring copper-based phone and broadband infrastructure in phases.
Customers in affected areas are expected to receive notices by letter, email, text message, or phone. The notice should identify the relevant upgrade or disconnection date and describe the replacement services available at that address. AT&T says those options may include:
- AT&T Fiber, where the network is available;
- AT&T Internet Air, where wireless coverage and capacity support it;
- other wireless service; or
- AT&T Phone–Advanced for customers who need a replacement home-phone service.
These alternatives are not guaranteed at every location. A customer whose copper connection is being retired should check availability by entering the service address, not by relying on the name of the old product or on a neighbor’s upgrade.
How to identify which U-verse service you have
The word “U-verse” by itself does not establish that your account is scheduled for cancellation. Check your bill, account page, and equipment.

- Look for television charges. A channel package, TV receivers, DVR fees, or programming charges indicate U-verse TV.
- Look for Internet charges. A broadband plan delivered through an AT&T gateway, particularly over older copper or DSL/VDSL infrastructure, points to legacy Internet service.
- Check for home-phone service. A digital voice line associated with the older broadband installation may be U-verse Voice or another legacy AT&T voice product.
- Read AT&T’s notice carefully. The affected service and local deadline should be more reliable than a general headline about “U-verse.”
AT&T’s wired Internet terms still use “U-verse Internet” among historical or alternative names for wired Internet services. Seeing that label in a bill or document does not, on its own, provide a shutdown date.
What to do if you receive a copper-retirement notice
- Confirm the date. Write down the exact upgrade or disconnection deadline in the notice.
- Check replacement options by address. Fiber, Internet Air, or another option may not have identical speed, latency, data, installation, or pricing.
- Compare the technical details. Ask about upload speed, data allowances, equipment charges, installation fees, taxes, and promotional pricing after the introductory period.
- Arrange the replacement before the deadline. Waiting until the copper line stops working can leave you without Internet or home-phone service during installation delays.
- Back up important recordings and files. Internet service and U-verse TV are separate products, but customers changing bundles should confirm what happens to DVR access, apps, and account logins.
- Keep proof of the order and equipment return. Save the confirmation number, shipping receipt, and final bill.
If you do nothing, AT&T says that copper phone and broadband service in the affected area will eventually stop working and be disconnected. A gateway that still functions today does not guarantee that the line is exempt from the retirement schedule.

If you want to cancel rather than wait for a network change, AT&T’s instructions require the account owner to call 800-288-2020 during normal business hours. Tell the representative specifically that you want to disconnect U-verse TV, not AT&T Internet.
AT&T’s published instructions direct customers to call rather than offering an online U-verse TV cancellation path. Ask for a cancellation confirmation number and keep it with the final bill and equipment-return receipt.
U-verse TV billing is generally one month in advance on a 30-day cycle. The effective cancellation date is normally the last day of the current billing cycle, and service generally continues until then. AT&T’s terms also state that unused days may not receive a prorated credit. Changing or canceling service can end promotional discounts, and unreturned leased equipment may produce an additional charge.

Vacation hold is different from cancellation
A temporary vacation hold is not the same as disconnecting U-verse TV. While the service is on hold:

Active support documentation is another indication that existing U-verse TV service has not been assigned a published nationwide shutdown date, although it cannot guarantee that service will remain available indefinitely.
Claims that should be treated cautiously
- “All U-verse ends on January 1.” No nationwide date has been verified. Copper retirement is being handled by location, while U-verse TV support remains active.
- “U-verse TV is still owned by AT&T.” This is outdated after the 2025 sale of AT&T’s remaining DIRECTV stake to TPG.
- “U-verse TV and U-verse Internet are the same service.” They are separate products. Copper retirement primarily concerns legacy broadband and voice infrastructure.
- “A working gateway means the line is safe.” Retirement can occur while the existing connection is still functioning. Follow the written local notice.
