On December 2, 2024, AnimeFenix announced that it would shut down indefinitely, saying its domain would be terminated after pressure from copyright holders. At roughly the same time, GogoAnime and Anitaku stopped adding new episodes. That created a larger story than a single streaming site disappearing: it showed how quickly unofficial anime platforms can become inaccessible, while leaving important questions unanswered about who acted against them and whether every related service was actually closed.
What happened to AnimeFenix?
AnimeFenix, a Spanish-language anime-streaming website, posted a farewell message saying that it would close indefinitely. The operators attributed the decision to growing pressure from the copyright industry and said the domain would be terminated.
However, the announcement did not identify a court case, enforcement agency, rights holder, or specific legal action against AnimeFenix. That distinction matters. The site clearly announced its own shutdown, but the available reporting did not establish that it had been formally seized or closed through a publicly documented lawsuit.
The operators also used the farewell message to criticize the concentration of power in the anime business. They urged users to be aware of “monopolies” created by large companies and claimed that Sony controlled more than 60% of anime through Funimation and KADOKAWA. That percentage was an assertion by AnimeFenix’s operators, not an independently verified market figure.

GogoAnime did not receive the same confirmed shutdown notice
GogoAnime and Anitaku were still accessible when the December 2 report was published, but they had stopped adding new content. This is why describing the services as having “gone dark” can be misleading if it suggests a confirmed permanent closure.
The more precise description is that the sites froze in place. Their operators had not publicly announced that they were leaving, and a moderator in a related Discord community reportedly said there had been “no words from operators.” In other words, the evidence showed an interruption in updates, not a confirmed seizure, legal shutdown, or permanent end.
| Service | What was reported in December 2024 | What was not established |
|---|---|---|
| AnimeFenix | Announced an indefinite shutdown and said its domain would be terminated. | No specific public case, court order, or named enforcement action was identified. |
| GogoAnime | Remained accessible but stopped adding fresh content. | No confirmed permanent closure or operator statement. |
| Anitaku | Also stopped updating alongside the wider disruption. | No independently documented explanation proving a permanent shutdown. |
The Sony and KADOKAWA detail needs correcting
AnimeFenix’s warning about corporate control was particularly easy to connect to later headlines, but one important fact is often misstated: Sony did not purchase KADOKAWA in December 2024.
On December 19, Sony Group and KADOKAWA announced a strategic capital and business alliance. Sony acquired newly issued KADOKAWA shares for approximately ¥50 billion. Following the transaction, Sony became KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder with roughly 10% ownership. KADOKAWA remained a separate company; Sony did not acquire it outright.

The plot follows Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a notebook known as the Death Note, dropped on Earth by the Shinigami Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone simply by writing down their name on the notebook.
The partnership does increase Sony’s strategic influence in areas such as anime, publishing, games, and entertainment distribution. It does not support the simpler claim that Sony owned all or most of KADOKAWA, and it does not independently verify AnimeFenix’s “more than 60%” statement.
AnimeFenix was not Animeflix
Another source of confusion is the similarity between the names AnimeFenix and ANIMEFLIX. They were separate websites and separate events.
The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment announced the shutdown of ANIMEFLIX on August 15, 2024. ACE said that service had attracted between 7 million and 13 million monthly visits, carried more than 500 anime films and 400 series, and had associated domains redirected to ACE’s “Watch Legally” page.
That August action should not be presented as the cause of AnimeFenix’s December announcement unless a direct connection is documented. The two names refer to different services, and the available reporting did not establish that AnimeFenix was the site targeted in ACE’s ANIMEFLIX announcement.

Why the episode matters beyond one website
Unofficial streaming services often depend on a shifting mixture of domains, mirrors, advertising networks, third-party video hosts, and volunteer-maintained catalogues. A site can remain technically reachable while no longer receiving episodes, or a familiar name can appear at a new domain without proving that the original operators are behind it.
That makes “online” and “operating normally” two different conditions. A homepage loading in a browser does not confirm that:
- the original team still controls the service;
- new episodes are being added;
- a mirror is authentic;
- user accounts or login pages are safe; or
- the service has permission to distribute the programmes it hosts.
A third-party uptime tracker later listed GogoAnime as reachable and monitored gogoanime.nl, but that is only evidence that a particular address responded. It does not verify ownership, authenticity, licensing, or continuity with the former GogoAnime operation. The tracker also recorded user reports involving login problems, slow performance, audio issues, and poor video quality.
A concise timeline
- August 15, 2024: ACE announced the shutdown of ANIMEFLIX, a service distinct from AnimeFenix.
- December 2, 2024: AnimeFenix announced an indefinite closure and blamed increasing copyright-holder pressure.
- Early December 2024: GogoAnime and Anitaku were reported to be accessible but no longer updating.
- December 19, 2024: Sony and KADOKAWA announced a capital and business alliance. Sony invested approximately ¥50 billion and obtained about 10% of KADOKAWA, rather than buying the company.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The documented sequence supports three conclusions. AnimeFenix announced its own indefinite shutdown. GogoAnime and Anitaku stopped updating. And the corporate landscape around anime distribution was becoming a prominent part of the public debate.

It does not support the stronger claims that GogoAnime was permanently closed, that it was legally seized, or that Sony bought KADOKAWA. Nor does a later working mirror prove that the original service returned.
For viewers looking for reliable access, licensed platforms and official publisher or broadcaster pages remain the safer way to check availability. They also provide clearer information about rights, release schedules, subtitles, and where a series can legally be watched.

Why did AnimeFenix close?
AnimeFenix said it would close indefinitely because of increasing pressure from copyright holders and that its domain would be terminated. The public announcement did not provide a specific court case, legal document, or named enforcement action.
Did Sony buy KADOKAWA?
No. Sony and KADOKAWA announced a strategic capital and business alliance on December 19, 2024. Sony invested approximately ¥50 billion and received about 10% of KADOKAWA, becoming its largest shareholder while KADOKAWA remained independent.
Was AnimeFenix the same site as Animeflix?
No. AnimeFenix and ANIMEFLIX were separate services. ACE announced the shutdown of ANIMEFLIX in August 2024, months before AnimeFenix announced its own closure.
The Bottom Line
AnimeFenix confirmed an indefinite shutdown, while GogoAnime and Anitaku were best described as having stopped updating rather than definitively gone dark. The episode also exposed how easily reports about unofficial anime services, copyright enforcement, and corporate ownership can become blurred. The available evidence does not show a confirmed permanent GogoAnime closure or a Sony takeover of KADOKAWA.
