Why the Secret Service has two missions
The Secret Service was established to combat counterfeiting and officially began work on 5 July 1865, according to a White House historical archive. Presidential protection became an agency responsibility later. The archive describes special agents as handling both protection and investigations, including counterfeiting, forgery, and financial crimes.
The White House archive stated in 1998 that more than a third of the nation’s money was counterfeit during Lincoln’s administration. This is a historical figure reported by that archive, not a current statistic.
