In “Surviving Twice,” a documentary by German broadcaster NDR’s “Sportclub Story” program, follow the incredible story of Shaul Ladany, an elite Israeli athlete who narrowly escaped death twice in Germany. Ladany survived the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and later emerged alive from the tragic attack on the Israeli national team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Despite these harrowing experiences, Ladany went on to become a successful academic and sporting champion, with a world record in the 50-mile walk that still stands today.
The film takes viewers on a journey through Ladany’s life – from his home in Israel to the streets of Tel Aviv where he ran the marathon at night. It also shows his powerful speech to the state parliament of Lower Saxony on Holocaust Memorial Day and returns to the Olympic Village in Munich, where he survived the traumatic event that shook the world. Through Ladany’s inspiring story, “Surviving Twice” reminds us of the resiliency of the human spirit and the power of determination in the face of adversity.
