Why We Believe in Gods: Andy Thomson (Lecture)
This great lecture summarizes scientific research that explains why humans have an inclination to create divinity.
It is not a defense of atheism, but rather shows what science says about the various modules & capabilities that humans have developed over thousands of years that lend themselves to the creation & acceptance of religious explanations.
Although the presenter made clear that he is not a man of faith, the conference is not an attack on the church as much as an explanation for why people might believe. Very current and a good intro for anyone who wants to learn more about this topic.

It’s a discussion dude, address my comment, I have no problem with the explanation for the cause of the universe being a god or gods, but that’s not any religion that i know of, it’s just deism, and it’s unproven but intellectually defensible. What is your point?
You continue to ask questions that i have admitted i can’t answer and i have also said i am happy to attribute to god/gods (provided they aren’t the ridiculous god/gods of religions). Why? What do you want me to accept that i don’t already?
With regard to this issue, this is the only explanation that the dialectic can offer as a justification of the dynamism of matter. However, it is very easy to see why this explanation cannot be adopted from a scientific point of view. If hydrogen were to contain its contradictory essentially and to develop due to this fact, in accordance with the alleged dialectical laws, then why is it that not all the hydrogen atoms were completed?
What is your point? There are 3 main questions that defy explanation at present 1/ the origin of the universe (why is there something rather than nothing?) 2/ the origin of life 3/ consciousness. God/gods are an intellectually defensible explanation for all 3 but not the gods of any religion with a holy book that contains nonsense. You don’t know the answers to these questions any more than i do but just because you can’t imagine a natural explanation does not mean there isn’t one.
I’ve already admitted it could be a god, but given science’s track record of explaining phenomena by natural processes we should reserve judgement and keep an open mind. What is certain is if there is a creator god, it did not write the books of religions as they contain nonsense and a god would know that.
Matter or God?Take your choice!Matter and MotionMatter is in continuous motion and constant development. This is a fact on which we all agree. Further, matter requires a cause that moves it. This is another fact admitted with no disputation. The most basic issue regarding the philosophy of motion is this. Can the matter in motion be the cause or agent of its motion?
Well it could be that a god designed the universe in such a way that chemistry would give rise to biochemistry and then biology which would diversify by evolution into myriad life forms. Gods or no we know that life has evolved from simple to complex and If you don’t know how there are many books (i mentioned nick lane’s excellent “life ascending”) or try youtube user “cdk007″ his channel is full of excellent vids showing how natural processes lead to complex intelligent life.
Materialism imagines that lowly objects are the source for the emergence of higher objects without troubling to ascertain whether the higher, in fact, exists at the level of the lower. If lowly matter is unable even at the highest stage of its development, namely thought and reflection— either to create itself or to violate any of the laws that rule over it, it follows ineluctably that it is unable to create other beings and the laws regulating them.
God and Empirical Logic.Matter or God?Take your choice! Some brainless atheists regard matter as independent and imagine that it has itself gained this freedom and elaborated the laws that rule over it. But how can they believe that hydrogen and oxygen, electrons and protons, should first produce themselves, then be the source for all other beings, and finally decree the laws that regulate themselves and the rest of the material world? Pseudo-Scientific Demagoguery!
The best thing about this youtube video is seeing the creationists illustrating the points made by Dr Andy Thompson in the comments section:I mean, all these arguments based on appeals to authority; casual determinism (a priori agency); creation of minimally counter-intuitive worlds (aka half-truths/lies); etc…In short, the hi-jacking of our social cognitive functions as “intuitive politicians/prosecutors”– to try and disprove evolutionary science by NOT using the Scientific Method?!
I have already given you a reference, but you might want to consider the fact that 94% of the people best qualified to interpret the data (members of the national academy and it’s even higher in the royal society) do NOT believe in a personal god.
I have given you a reference to a naturalistic explanation of the origin of life. We thought thunder, lightning, the sun, disease, a rainbow etc were all supernatural and now we accept them as natural, won’t you at least consider an alternative to a magic superman poofing life into existence?
God and Empirical Logic. One of the most destructive and misleading factors in thoughts concerning God is to restrict one’s thought to the “logic” of the empirical sciences and to *fail* to recognize the *limits* and boundaries of that “logic”. Is that which is necessary in essence and which is considered the first source of existence matter itself or something else beyond the limits of matter?
What are Moslems? This is mainly due to Atheists not being as populated, as all others. None the less all of them combined.Did you even listen to his speech. Also please provide the link as to where you heard this about the trafficking.
Did you know that atheist websites have been losing traffic or more than two years now? After all the hype a few years back about their books, it turns out they have no new ideas. Not one argument that had not been addressed decades ago! When you have a bad product, advertising it more will not help you. Claiming your opponents are all stupid will not work either. Especially when 85% of all advanced degrees are earned by Christians, Jews, Moslems or Hindus.
You can argue for a designer and i can’t say you are mistaken, but read nick lane’s book “life ascending” and you might understand how science has explained that if there is a god, it is far more inventive than the petty gods of religion.
And any society, anywhere, throughout the universe, which is corrupted by these, no matter how noble and well intended it’s founding will “fall”. And the only thing that can prevent such a fall is “Love”. Because true love requires the truth… good or bad.
A theory when found to be false is in fact a lie. Although perhaps not intended it still remains a lie. When lies or fantasy are combined with the truth, although partially true, it also becomes a lie in its entirety. And when these are presented as truths to the extent that people believe them to be true, they become part of our lives, our reality, our society, both secular and religious. The end result of which is inevitable.
07:00 If you remember? as though you were there. Hahahaha LMAO Pure theory mixed with some thruths refered to as truth, but its still a lie. Amazing… Intuitive reasoning is exactly what this is… Man! Religion is pretty much the same, but this is no different, believe it or not.Love one another ppl, just love one another… This is nothing but Hypothetical Reality, an anti-thesis to religion in a hope for a synthesis. WoW
vv vv vv(dot)carm(dot)org/when-was-bible-written-and-who-wrote-it Explains who wrote the Bible. And we know the Bible is true is because SCIENCE proves it. Pretty much everything that happened in the Bible has been recorded in history, and has evidence that supported its happening. They have even found some of the objects that were talked about in it. Oh, and also, God is not a magical being.
